Thoughts on the Tumblr Purge

My friends, I am old. I have been an internet denizen since the days of dial up text-only BBS proto-web. I used modems to talk to people over computers before AOL was sending out free FLOPPY DISKS. My first computer had NO HARD DRIVE- you read that right, it did not possess a hard drive. It ran DOS 2.0 off off a floppy disc in drive B while I used whatever program in Drive A. I have been posting fan fiction online since before it was called fan fiction. I posted stories to a BBS on a board named “Media INSPIRED Stories and Art” or MISA for short back in 1988 or so.

So, I’ve seen this kind of thing happen before. People are talking about the ff.net purge, and the LJ strikethrough  and, believe me, they are RIGHT to call back to those events. But I can tell you, it was happening before then. I know this pattern. It is very predictable. 

I have seen it happen with Facebook ‘secret groups’, with yahoo clubs/groups, with geocities and angelfire sites, AOL chatrooms and ‘clubs’, all the way back to Compuserv and popular BBS systems. 

Do NOT take comfort, however small, in the fact that the guidelines CURRENTLY state that written erotica will be safe, because it will NOT stay that way.

It is SOP to target art and photography FIRST- it’s the easiest to sell as a protective measure for ‘children’ who aren’t supposed to be able to access the site in the first place. They are banking on being able to disregard any criticism, no matter how accurate, by spinning the same tired talking points about underage access to ‘pornography’. They are BANKING on the social stigma of seeking out sexually explicit or kink-oriented images to silence the majority of people impacted. 

They are COUNTING on the people who read and write sexually explicit and kink-oriented STORIES to get scared, check the guidelines and go “welp, sucks for artists, but whew!” and do… virtually nothing.

Because then, all the artists and photographers leave. Some will find new venues, others will stop creating altogether. Content will be lost. Forever.

Once the dust settles from that, the guidelines will change again. Because NOW the most scandalous thing on the site will be written content. Suddenly ‘explicit fiction’ will start being called ‘pornography’ and the exact same concerns that let them flush all the sexual visual media from the site will send the fic-writers down the same path.

They HAVE to do it that way, because they only have the power to get away with it when they SPLIT THE ART/CREATOR COMMUNITY IN HALF.

What is happening now is the first half of a divide and conquer strategy that works really, really well. 

I’m pretty pro-porn, pro-kink, pro-sex in general, but even if you are staunchly ANTI-PORN, you need to be very worried right now. 

Am I peeved that I’m going to lose access to some really great explicit art that I enjoy? Yeah, a bit. I’m not afraid to admit that. I am 43 years old and I recognize that I am a bit of a hedonist (like most humans) and that dirty pictures make parts of my brain real happy. That’s just… basic neurology for most (but not all) people.

Am I writing this because I am peeved about losing those dirty pictures? HELL NO. I am writing this because I know what’s coming. It’s a tired old joke to me by now. 

What’s coming is an ever-increasing restriction on content. What’s coming is a site that uses ‘think of the children!’ (that, again, are not supposed to even have access to this site to begin with) as a way to silence more and more and more people.

Before long, political posts will be flagged as inappropriate, LGBTQIA+ content will be called ‘sensitive’ or ‘too mature’, the restrictions on art and fiction will get more and more and more stringent, people will get blocked or flagged for simply stating that they are a sexual violence survivor, resources for victims of oppression will dry up, ANY mention of Religion or Spirituality will be discouraged.

If ANY of that is important to you, even if you HATE pornography in all its possible forms, for any number of reasons, you need to be concerned! You do. Because sooner or later, something you DO care about and support will be the thing in the crosshairs and you’ll discover two things: (1) the people who cared about fighting censorship are long gone, and (2) you are now the ‘lowlife’ in the eyes of the people that remain that you once considered the ‘pornographers’ to be… and maybe, just maybe, you were as wrong about them as the people who think you are the one that deserves to get booted are about you.

The ‘slippery slope’ is a famous logical fallacy. I’m not talking about a slippery slope- I’m talking about a well documented pattern of behavior that has been happening regularly in regards to policing internet spaces since internet spaces have existed. This isn’t a slippery slope situation. This is an established and effective way to censor and disenfranchise internet communities.

Do NOT delude yourself into thinking you are safe. You aren’t.

And if you think “they wouldn’t risk destroying the site! It would be financial suicide!” you don’t understand the countless ways that huge corporations can make money off of a failing forum!

“Someday soon,” Jason said with a nod of his head.  He combed a hand through her hair more gently now.  “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to snap at you.”  He pulled her close and held her.  

“Yes little one.  I promise.  On the bench.  As soon as that cast is off and you’ve recovered.  He parked the car in a spot.  “Ready to go in little one?”  He turned in his seat to look at the two.

Sophie gasped when her best friend suddenly got serious. Saying such naughty words to her. “But…but I thought Daddy was gonna bree…uh…be the first person to do that.” Her blush was so bright she worried that she could never be her normal color again. “Would you really do that in public?” She whispered softly while her pupils dilated with arousal so much that they were almost black.

Jason gave her a serious look.  “Keep teasing me and find out,” He said.  

“Daddy will be the one to breed you, princess,” Cal said to answer her question.  “Unless you tease Jason too much and he fucks you instead.  So you better behave.  I might be the more sadistic of the two of us, but... Jason has his moments too.”

“I don’t think I am. You two are simply the best.” Sophie said softly then giggled as she started to tease Jason like she normally did. He always teased her back and never took her seriously. She was conveniently forgetting that he had spanked her earlier. Biting her lip, she leaned up to kiss his throat then her hand gently squeezed his thigh.

Jason growled low in his throat and his voice took on a commanding tone.  “Princess, if you keep teasing me before your doctor’s appointment, I’m going to end up fucking you in front of Cal’s dad and that would be awkward.”  

Cal chuckled hearing what was going on with Jason and Sophie in the back seat.  “Oh you’re in trouble now, Princess.”  He winked at Jason in the rearview mirror.

“O-Oh…” Sophie blushed at Jason’s description and felt her thighs clenching in need. Her heart broke a little bit at how easily Jason said they stopped playing when Daddy was married. But even more than that she felt such sorrow from Daddy. Before she got in the car she gave him the tightest hug that she could. She smiled as he buckled her in which only turned brighter as Jason got buckled in too. Daddy was such a good Daddy. Why did he keep telling everyone that he didn’t want a submissive? He obviously wanted Jason. Leaning over, she gave his cheek a soft kiss. “Thank you for coming too. You and Daddy will make this a very easy trip. But…you won’t get mad I’m not taking my medicine, will you?” 

Jason silenced himself as soon as his name was on Cal’s lips.  He ducked his head, knowing that Mary was a topic Cal didn’t like broached.  So he fell silent.  But little Sophie was so sweet and precious.  How could any Dom, let alone a Daddy Dom, resist her sweet heart?  “It’s my pleasure little one,” he said and kissed the top of her head again.  “I won’t be mad at you but I really hope that you’re not doing anything that will cause you harm, Sophie.”  

Cal was surprised by Sophie when she hugged him so tightly.  She had a sweet, tender heart.  But he had given up being a Dom or a Daddy Dom at least on a 24/7 basis.  Now he restricted things to just the club, just a scene, no strings.  He got in the car and started driving.

Sophie couldn’t help but smile as Jason came up to kiss her cheek. Her eyes widened in shock when Daddy said that he was going to punish Jason as well. She leaned over to whisper in his ear. “Does Daddy punish you too?” Just the thought of Daddy and Jason together was enough to make her center wet with need. How did she not know that they played together? Her good hand squeezed Jason’s bicep to just be connected to him. “Do you cal him Daddy too?”

“Yes Master Cal punishes me too sometimes.  But I don’t call him Daddy.  I call him Master if he’s topping me.  Otherwise I call him Cal.  I’m a switch Sophie.  With women I’m the dominant.  With men I’m the submissive.”  He explained.  He knew that a lot of people didn’t really understand the switch mentality.  He kissed the top of her head as they walked towards the car.  “Cal and I have been friends for years. But we didn’t play when he was married to Mary.”  

Cal was walking besides them and frowned when he heard Jason talk about Mary.  “Jason,” he said cutting off the discussing about his ex-wife.”  But Jason was right.  When he had been married to Mary, she had been too jealous to let Jason in to their relationship.  Something had always been missing, because Cal loved having Jason co-top with him and submit to him.  THey were so close.  And he realized in that moment that he had pushed Jason away as well.  “I’m sorry,” He said quietly and opened the door to the car for both of them.  Once Sophie was in, he buckled her seatbelt and then he buckled Jason’s seatbelt as well.

“Andrew knew about the problem…he just didn’t know that it was a…problem…” Sophie said softly then snapped her head to look over at him in shock. “A punishment? But…but…Daddy?!” She cried out in habit as she tried to get out of her punishment. 

Jason came into the club and kissed Sophie on the cheek.  “Are we ready to go to the hospital and get that cast off?”  He smiled.  “May I ride with you, Cal?  My car’s in the shop.  Been taking the bus for the last week.”

Cal nodded his head at Jason.  “Of course you can ride with us.  But Jason, you sould have told me about your car a week ago.  It appears I’m going to have to dish out some punishment tonight.  Don’t think I’m not keeping track of either of your indiscretions.  Now come on.  We don’t want to be late for the appointment.”

“It’s…it’s…” Sophie fell back into her chair and blushed as she told him what she had. “It’s for a vitamin deficiency that I have because I tend not to eat. Dr. Sandeski says that if I’m not careful I’ll have to stay over night at the hospital again.” Then she wrung her hands together to calm her nerves. “I-I…my mother was an addict when she was pregnant with me and it caused me to have some…health issues in the past. I was in and out of the hospital while I was in foster care and when I ran away I got sick again.”

Cal nodded his head in understanding.  “You should have told Andrew about the problem you’re having with the doctor not giving you the medicine you want.  We’ll make sure you get medicine you can take.  But tonight you’re going to get a punishment for not speaking up.”

Sophie’s mouth opened to lie, but then she thought better of it and blushed. “Um…no…I haven’t been taking my medicine. But it tastes icky! He won’t let me buy the fruit flavored kind. Because he says that I’m a grown up and he won’t prescribe me them!”

“What is the medicine for?” Cal asked, remaining calm to get all of the facts.  He wanted to make sure Sophie wasn’t hurting herself but ignoring the doctor’s orders to take the medicine.  But he would have a conversation with the doctor.  Sophie was a little.  There was nothing wrong with her wanting to take a fruity flavored medicine if it was available.

“Pinky promise? Really pinky promise?” Sophie turned in her seat as she pushed her hair behind her ear. “But you can’t listen to what the doctor says. I have been taking my medicine. He’s just a poopyhead.” Now she was the one lying. Without Andrew to make her take her medicine there was no way that Sophie was going to take them. 

“Sophie,” He said sternly.  He waited for her to tell the truth about her medicine.  He could tell that she was being dishonest and if she were his, he would flip her over his knees and spank her.
