Debuting out of Phoenix, AZ comes Divine Hammer, which yes, pays homage to the second single off of The Breeders’ Last Splash. Sharing former members of The Beautiful Ones and Alpha & Omega, this four-piece creates a lo-fi hardcore sound which takes us on a nostalgic journey back to the 2005-2009 era of hardcore punk (think Iron Age, The Rival Mob, and War Hungry blended with a little bit of Discharge and Cro-Mags). With riffs that ride and a rhythm that begs for stage dives, it’s hard to imagine them playing a show that wouldn’t have the entire venue’s focus.
However, what truly separates the band is the story of Austin Ellerbusch, the band’s front man. At age 25, Austin is living with stage 4 lung and liver melanoma cancer. Because of his terminal illness, there is an honest weight to the songwriting that elevates the band’s capabilities to a much more urgent place. In his own words: “I think this is my way of expressing my feelings and the pain of cancer treatment. I have been completely forced out of my own life and have to live this life where I am terminally ill and will be lucky to live five years. I have absolutely zero choice. This is me explaining how chemo feels, people taking advantage of me to make themselves look good, and people refusing to treat me like an adult.” The truth has led Divine Hammer to have a rare perspective in songwriting, and allowed for Austin’s closest friends to rally around him as it’s expressed with passion in their music. The band’s EP “86’d” will be released via cassette through Atwater Records later this month.
