The Woman
Word count: 490
Bear is over at Darling’s house, bothering her as per usual. She’s making tea, not to greet her guest but for herself (she leaves enough water for him, but she’ll never admit it). Bear is going on and on about his new coworker, so funny, so hardworking, so smart. Oh Darling, you simply must meet her, blah, blah, she started tuning him out. Darling pours the tea, knuckles white from gripping the handle. Wasn’t she all of those things just the other day? Why the hell was he talking about some woman who could never hate him as much as Darling could and not her? The tea leaves floated to the top, like the anger slowly bubbling out of Darling. “She’s just so articulate, don’t you think, Darling?” She took a deep breath. Letting the steam hit her face, she pursed her lips and smiled, nodding. She handed the cup to Bear. Today will be the first and last day she will make him a cup of tea. “Oh no, no, no thank you. Much appreciated, but gods know what you’ve done with it.” Bear’s hands were waving in the air wildly, but he still had a wide smile plastered on his face. He stood, itching to get away from this chair. “Sit down.” He sat. “Take the tea.” He took the tea. “Now drink it.” His shoulders relaxed as she poured her own cup from the same pot, surely she wouldn’t poison the whole pot? She took a sip, as did he. No reason to be afraid of a woman capable of murder. Turns out, she did, in fact, poison the tea. It hit her first, as she drank first, and she sank to the ground in front of him, brandishing her middle finger at Bear. Darling could barely speak, but just enough to cuss him out. Now they’re both dying on the floor, as Darling struggles to get her antidote. They fight over it until they both get their share. Bear goes back to his normal, cheery self. “You know what, we should get Venusian ice cream!" “That’s a great idea! Let’s go!” She was mimicking him. The same elated tone, the same asinine smile. Darling was no dumb Aphrodite, she knew exactly what she was doing, but he didn’t know why. She’s never been nice to him. And he would find out why. They took off down the metal road to the ice cream parlor.
A few days later...
"That was you, wasn't it? I read about it in the papers."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You have nothing to be ashamed of, Darling. It only slightly bothers me that you 'took care of her', you have nothing to worry about. We can take care of your little mess."
"Wha- no, I didn't do it."
"Where's the body?" A creepy smile formed on his face.
"Asshole." She shoved him. "I didn't do it."
"Show me."
