red academia vibes
getting in arguments with professors. pulling the dog-eared, highlighted to hell copy of Capital from your backpack. PDFs on the train home from work, reminding yourself why you work, why you and your coworkers deserve better. You wrap your knuckles in gauze on Sunday night and walk into class in thrifted tweed monday morning. You watch your classmates working with passion and imagine a world where anyone can learn like this as they please, where beauty and knowlegde exists and grows because it can. You imagine this and write in your calenda, a thumb grazing tenderly over the meetings with your comrades you have scheduled for the week.

Since you ask, in Sevilla Holy Week is not currently tied to any particular ideology. Here being member of a Hermandad is like being member of a particular social club around which some aspects of the public life might or might not be organized,so it's actually more related to family traditions.
Moreover,in recent decades the Andalusian left has been working on reapropiating the meaning of our traditions, since they were used by Franco's dictatorship to push for a very specific "spanish brand" that didn't have much to do with the way we lived our Holy Week.
In Sevill, holy week is not linked to religion (all the people I know who are Nazarenos o Costaleros are atheists) but rather it's seen as an unique oportunity to enjoy some of our best works of arts in a wonderful setting. People come together to play the music, carry the pasos, embroid the clothings and arrange the flowers for the rest of city to see. Even though many people won't recognize it, the lgbtq community and particularly gay men have traditionally played a key role in the Cofradias and will continue to do so.
Tumblr media
Holy Week, like Feria and like many other Andalusian traditions are sadly tainted with the manipulation of Franco's regime, who tried to make them fit their values + present it as the "conservative, catholic Spain" and a touristic attraction. However, Holy Week in Seville is not that conservative and not that catholic, but rather just a barroque performance done for the aesthetic. If there is faith involved it's 90% not in "God" but rather in a particular image, closer to superstition.
Tumblr media
TLDR: in Seville (I won't talk for the rest of Andalusia) Holy Week its about art and tradition. The only reason why it appears as a "conservative/ right leaning" festivity is due to oppression and propaganda of Franco's regime, but the Andalusian left is quite active in participating, enjoying and reclaiming our tradition.
I have a question which might be a interesting ask.
So I’ve been seeing these videos pop up on my tiktok for a few days. It’s of people talking in Spanish but wearing these outfits. These outfits have hoods and I’ve seen them in black and white they cover the whole person. I know it’s a tradition but could you tell me more if possible. I’m really confused cause as a person with American family these mean something that has caused horror and terror to minorities. Thanks so much. Have a wonderful day.
I assume you mean the capirote, the pointy hat worn by nazarenos in the religious processions done during the Holy Week in Spain, some Latin American countries, and some places of Italy. People from the USA often complain that they look like the KKK, in some cities they have had to put up signs in English for tourists.
Tumblr media
This is in Cádiz (Andalusia, Spain)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are in Cartagena (Murcia, Spain).
The people who wear those pointy hats are people who want to show their devotion and penitence. If I'm not mistaken, each brotherhood uses a different colour combination (kinda like football teams, but make it super Catholic), though very often they're all white or all black. It has nothing to do with racism.
The origin of this clothes is in the 1400s, not only way before the KKK was founded but even centuries before the USA was founded. In that time, the Spanish inquisition condemned the people who committed "religious crimes" to wear these pointy hats made of paper on the streets, so that this public humiliation would be their punishment. This went on until the 1800s in some areas, my mom has explained to me that her grandmother (who was from a village in Andalusia) still told her about these punishments in horror. So yes, this pointy hat is a symbol of having sinned and being paying for your sins. It looked like this:
Tumblr media
The Holy Week is a time of penitence, this means that Christians have to repent of their sins. For this reason, in the Catholic tradition, people who want to repent wear this hat, as if they were punishing themselves. In some places such as Southern Spain, you can also see people self-flagellating, walking barefoot, carrying heavy crosses or chains, etc. All of these are the same: they publicly show their shame and punishment to show that they repent of their sins.
The nazareno clothing also has the advantage that it covers your face, so it lets you be anonymous and not center the attention on the person but on God.
In the USA, they have the KKK (an extremely violent white supremacist group) that dresses in the same clothes but all in white. They dressed like this to look like ghosts and scare Black Americans. In their origin (in the 19th century), they used to wear different clothes, but in the 1910s switched to this capirote when it became a standardized uniform that could be produced en masse and sold for profit.
The reason why the KKK wears this clothes is to make themselves look like ghosts and at the same time hide their identities (though if you read witnesses of Black people back in the early 20th century, they often knew very well who was under the hood).
Some people claim that the KKK copied this uniform from the nazarenos, and so some people from Spain complain of cultural appropriation. However, whether there is a direct relation or not, they are two different things and nazarenos should not be blamed for what unrelated people with a similar dress have done.
It's also worth remembering that the KKK was violently anti-Catholic, they committed hate crimes against Italian immigrants for this reason.
This is the thing about cultures, the same or similar symbols can have different meanings to different peoples. The word "pet" means "domestic animal" in English but it means "fart" (🍑💨) in Catalan, and I can't assume English people are saying that their dog is a fart. It doesn't mean that people familiar with the KKK imagery have to be comfortable with the nazareno processions (I understand that their own interpretation will be at the back of their minds), but it's a case where they have to understand that it means something different here.
That being said, I can't speak for Spain because it's more common there, but in Catalonia this clothing can be associated with the right-wing. Now I'll explain why.
These processions are less common in Catalonia than in Spain, though they exist in some places. The two more or less famous ones are in Verges (a town with a very ancient and strong tradition of the Holy Week) and Perpinyà (where they do the procession of la Sanch, also an old and important tradition).
Tumblr media
Holy week procession in Verges (Comarques Gironines, Catalonia).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Processó de la Sanch in Perpinyà (Northern Catalonia).
In places like this, where the tradition already exists since a long time ago, it's normal to take part. Some people might do it to participate in the community celebration they've seen all their lives, without necessarily being too religious.
The places in Catalonia where the nazarenos are most usual to see are the cities in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona where most of the population is Spanish immigrants or children of Spanish immigrants. For this reason, the biggest procession is the one held in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat (one of these cities), and they do it in the way it's done in Andalusia (Southern Spain, where many of these families came from).
I don't want to blame this on all the people who participate and wear these clothes, but it's true that in these cities in the Metropolitan Area there are some of these brotherhoods who are related to Spanish nationalist far right-wing groups such as legionarios.
As an example, I personally have lived all my life in Catalonia and I've never seen one of these nazarenos processions here (I've only seen them when I was on holidays in Spain). I know only one person who takes part in them: he is a right-wing young man who joined the Spanish army and takes part in these processions in one of the cities I mentioned earlier in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona with his friends from the army. (And believe me, here it's not like the USA, it's not common at all for people to join the army and it carries a lot of implications and history).
So yes, in Catalonia many people will associate this clothing to ultra-Catholics or people who are close to the fascist dictatorship's ideals. I honestly have no idea if this is the case in Spain too or not, since there these processions are more widespread (I'd be interested to hear it if anyone can answer). But this association is done because of its role in the Catholic tradition, not for anything that has to do with the KKK.
I hope this answers your question and that I wasn't too confusing!

I’m really fascinated/haunted by this notion that a rural town could pop out of existence and it would probably take weeks for anyone to notice, and in the end the first people to show up might be from a utility coming to shut off power for unpaid bills. Do you think society at large would recognize that everyone from a town of 100 people vanished, or would a network of individuals with no other connections simply think that their one friend or relation wasn’t returning calls? Would motorists passing through Kettleman City on the 5 notice that it wasn’t there? Or would they assume that they missed the signs for the exit and ride right through to Coalinga? Could a big town disappear? How long would it take for people to notice Fresno was missing? Bakersfield? If all flights into Las Vegas got cancelled, if the highway exits disappeared, would people assume it never existed? Would it fade from public memory? Would people choose to forget it? Would people silently accept that their friends and loved ones who lived there were never coming home?

Hi it’s me Jess! And I’m asking for your help!!!
I have a couple of posts on here asking for donations but reblogs and donations have slowed down!
I know and realize and recognize that things are very tough on everyone right now but sometimes posts with a lot of texts people skip over (understandable I have undiagnosed adhd)
What is this post about you ask!?? It’s to help me move!!
I’ve been through quite a lot these last couple of years (a physically emotionally and mentally abusive relationship) two emotionally and mentally abusive friendships by people I have known for years. Racism at my job and in my town and like.......this whole entire country. I’m currently stuck in the good ole Midwest and even though my town counts itself as “liberal” and “progressive” it’s ripe with racism. Not to mention the town I am is full of abusers. (Included the three that I dealt with last year)
I’m trying to move out of my town and finally live life for myself in a new environment where I don’t have to be worried about literally physically bumping into one of my abusers in the supermarket.
If you can’t donate plsssssss reblog this post or any of my other posts you might come across.
My gofundme is here: https://gf.me/u/y7g3vh
💖My Venmo is: rosyish
💖My cashapp is: $rosyish
Literally even a couple of bucks count and go straight into my savings account for moving because I’m so deadly serious about moving from this town.
I mentally cannot spend another year here and my last therapy session even my therapist said moving would help immensely for my mental health!
Every donation goes to relocation costs, necessities, moving truck, insurance, food, and a nurse to come by my home to help my mom because I will not be home to take care of her and hopefully a pet fee so I can take my beautiful lovely dog Luna.
If you’re interested I have an onlyfans (currently 50% off) and I will be opening my online shop in December. Pls message me about either.
Again pls reblog if you cannot donate.
I’m so eternally grateful to everyone who has followed me over the years, has sent me kind messages, my friends who have supported and loved me through my hardships these past few years, to the people who have donated, to the people who have reblogged, and for the people who have helped me achieve my goal.
Thank youuuuu so much. 💖💖💖
