Also known as “Edinburgh’s Disgrace”, as well as some other fun nicknames, was building in honour of fallen soldiers and sailors during the Napoleonic Wars. Unfortunately, due to running out of funds the project was abandoned

Greyfriars Bobby
In the 19th-century this loyal pup spent 14 years guarding his owner’s grave until he himself died. He too is buried in Greyfrairs Kirkyard and this statue and pub were made in his honour.

JK Rowling started the first Harry Potter book in a cafe with a view of this cemetery as well as an old orphanage turned school which she based Hogwarts after. She got a few names from here included Sirius Black whose gravestone was unfortunately vandalized.
