04. toast and tension

the diner smells like burnt coffee and syrup and too much nostalgia. jay sits across from you in a hoodie and sunglasses, as if this is some sort of undercover mission and not an emergency marriage summit.

"we could have done this on facetime," you mutter, stirring your orange juice with the straw.

"and miss the joy of making awkward eye contact over pancakes?" he replies pointedly.

you almost smile. almost.

there's a beat of quiet before he pulls out a crumpled slip of paper.

"i made a list," he says. "of our choices."

you blink. "a list?"

"option one: annulment. clean cut. done."

he turns the page.

"option two: stay married for now, forestall drama, slowly let it fade away when everyone stops freaking out."

"and option three?"

he hesitates. "we do nothing. and wait and see what happens."

you look at him. "are you suggesting we stay married?"

“no," he says quickly. "just. you know. theoretically. as an idea."

you look at him, at the nervous angle of his smile and the beat of his fingers against his coffee mug. he's nervous. you are too.

"why is this more of a non-emergency meeting and less of a really weird first date?"

jay raises an eyebrow at you. "are you complaining that you're not having fun?

you throw a napkin at him. he catches it.

you and he are silent for a while. the waitress comes in with your waffles and serves you that look of hers as though she knows what all this is about. perhaps she does. maybe vegas operates on weird stories like yours.

you take a breath.

"we'll cancel it."

"alright," jay says, inclining his head. "but… not today."

you freeze. "why not today?"

he shrugs. "figured we could try getting married for 24 hours. just for kicks."

you glare. "you're crazy."

"legally, i'm your crazy husband."

you moan into your waffle.

this is going to be a long day.

Once Sieun befriends someone, it's for life.

The shock-induced deep sleep that Sieun went into was basically a long conversation with Beomseok. It's very interesting that in the day to day, Suho occupies all his thoughts, but when he entered a deeper level of subconscious, he discovered Beomseok. It shows how when Sieun befriends someone, which he doesn't do easily, it's for life. Even if they do him wrong, he continues to see them as friends and always cares for them. He still thinks about Beomseok and cares deeply for him.

The sleep can also be seen as Beomseok "imprisoning" Sieun, and the prison very interestingly was a boxing ring, a place where he lost not just one, but both of his friends. Beomseok was determined to make him stay there longer but when Sieun decided he must go, he immediately leaves his hand and lets him go, not waiting for an explanation, because the silence was the explanation. The silence is the turmoil between the past and the present. Between what is and what could have been.

02. wake up call

you sit on the edge of the bed, still staring at the silver ring on your finger as if it is goading you. your palms are wet. your lips dry. the air has a trace of cologne and something sugary—a likely champagne.

jay's still asleep next to you, one arm tossed across the pillow, hair tousled, face annoyingly serene. as if he didn't just sleepwalk into marriage last night.

you flounder. for a moment, you consider not waking him at all. maybe you can quietly slip out. pretend this never happened. burn the marriage license and disappear.

but. then he rolls over slightly, reaching down with your eyes to where he's got the ring on. matching yours.

your gut. flips.

you lean over. and push him gently on the shoulder. "jay."

nothing.

you push him again, harder this time. "jay. wake up."

he turns his head into the pillow, groaning. "five more minutes."

you're. blinking. seriously?

"jay," you tell him, louder. now, voice strained. "this is not a five more minutes thing. get up."

he opens one eye, groggy brow scrunching into light adjustment. his voice is a grind. "what's going on…?"

you gaze at him. "we need to discuss something."

he rolls onto his side some, still sort of asleep, until his eyes rove over your hand. and then to his.

you observe the exact second his expression clears—confusion, realization, terror.

"what the freaking heck?" he springs upright, blinking frantically. "is that—wait, are we—"

you hold up the wedding certificate from the nightstand and put it in his lap.

he stares at it. then at you. then back at it.

"…we were married?"

you nod slowly. "yeah. looks like it." beats of silence.

then he rubs his hair and grunts, "…i don't even remember proposing."

01. reality check

vegas was supposed to be a wild ride. a break from reality, letting go, and making memories—not mistakes.

but here you were, sitting on a hotel bed, staring at the ring on your finger like it would disappear if you blinked enough times. your head pounded, your mouth was dry, and all that had happened the night before was only a blur of flashing lights, blaring sounds, and laughter.

this had to be a joke. a prank. a really bad dream.

but then you turned your head. and there he was.

jay. sleeping, half-buried under the sheets, his dark hair tousled, breathing deep like he didn't have a care in the world. you looked down at his hand, and that's when the reality of the situation really sank in.

a matching ring. matching with the one on his left ring finger.

your stomach dropped.

you downed a ragged breath, advising yourself to be quiet, but it was too late when shards of last night fell into place. the cloudy silhouette of a wedding chapel. laughing. his fingers entwined with yours. a tipsy, carefree "why not?" forewarned by huzzahs.

no. no, no, no.

you screwed your eyes closed, but when you opened them again, everything stayed the same. the ring. he.".

this was not a mistake. this was marriage.
