Excerpt From a Barely Started WIP

She lay silently, the damp soil seeping through the back of her shirt, as tears began to pool in her bottom eyelids. Just then, no longer able to contain them, she squeezed her eyes shut, allowing the tears to flood onto her cheeks like a pot of water boiling over. And just like the pot, her head seared with anger. Rampant thoughts swirled with steam so hot that the tears she wept seemed to evaporate from her skin, leaving nothing but streaks of salty stains and mascara. Self-pity was not a notion that she often indulged, though it appeared to her that maybe she should. After all, she thought, it was easier to believe that she was the victim - hell, maybe she was - than to think of herself as the washed up junkie that the world saw her as.
