Does your scene include everything it should?

3. Snippet Saturday

This is an unedited snippet from my WIP novel, tentatively titled “Erebus: Nightmares.”

So, I’ve been writing a novel (actually, I have a couple in the works, but I’m focusing on one right now) and I thought it would be fun to join into this challenge for this CampNano season. Since I’m a *tad* behind on the month, I’m going to include a couple of posts together here for day 1 and 2 and then post day 3 on its own. 

1. What inspired your story?

I tend to listen to music when I’m trying to focus - especially when I need to set moods in the story. This song called “Oblivion” by Zayde Wolfe popped into the stream one day and it’s had me thinking for a long time about the concept of a gaping maw of nothingness and the lull of darkness. The character and then plot developed from there, thanks to some patience listening and conversations with my writing squad team. :) 

2. Who is your Main Character? 

His name is Erei. He is the representation of darkness. He has a counter. Her name is Theia, the representation of light.

I’m really struggling to word this but… 

Sometimes I think about how “The awkward but relatable high school student is in love with their beautiful blond classmate who’s a supermodel with an overprotective father.” and “The badass superhero is renowned for their leadership in saving the city alongside their sleek flirtatious black-cat partner.” are two sentences that you could give someone to accurately describe the two main characters of Miraculous Ladybug… but the average person unfamiliar with the show would see these sentences and immediately assume their genders incorrectly, you know?

It’s just something I always really appreciated about the show. It feels so cliche when you word it like that, but the fact that the show flips the gender roles just makes it feel really refreshing and new and it’s something I appreciate about the show a lot.

Things to do in quarantine (other than writing)

Make long, drawn out descriptions of your characters

Create moodboards, playlists, art, or anything else to do with your WIP

Write a dumb au- just for yourself. No deadline, no pressure of quality. Just write.

Figure out the perfect circumstances to write- do you like to drink coffee? Tea? Table, or lap? Music, TV, silence? Try out new things, too!

Clean up your workspace, if you have one. Decorate it. Make it home.

Go for a walk and listen to your muse playlist.

Try to cosplay one of your characters, no matter what you have at home.

Understand your MC better. Imagine them in quarantine- what's their favourite food? Their favourite music? Their favourite pastime? How do they sleep? How do they clean?

Make a shitty rendition of something from your story. Build a character from clay. Sew someone's outfit from scratch. Make a prop from tinfoil. Recreate a room with Lego.

Have stupid fun! Get to know the world of your story, get stuck in Wikipedia holes, scroll shopping websites for hours.

Just have fun, and feel happy knowing it'll help your world, even if you're struggling.

What we need right now is entertainment. Not stress.

Miraculous Ladybug Big Bang Sign Ups Are Open!

The ML Big Bang is a fandom-wide event for writers and artists to team up to create complementary fic and artwork.

In the ML Big Bang, writers will start drafting their fics, then artists will read anonymous snippets by the writers and choose which fic they would like to collaborate with. Finally pairs of writers and artists will work together from September to December on a minimum 10,000 word fic and accompanying artwork!
