Quite funny that Lomeli has spent decade after decade resolutely trying to not even think about the existence of women and it took less than 10 minutes of Sister Agnes glaring at him sternly for him to start comparing her to martyrs and saints and thinking about her eyes and how if he had ever married he would have wanted to marry someone like her, because if there is one thing Lomeli cannot ever do, it is defeat the bisexual thoughts.

I鈥檓 thrilled to say what I wrote is in fact an honest to god line from the book:

Everyone likes to laugh about Lawrence/Lomelis objectively hilarious way he avoids the temptation of woman by never thinking about them and pretending they don鈥檛 exist, but I also think this is actually kind of sad and worthy of critique?
By completely avoiding woman as a way to avoid sexual temptation he鈥檚 also inadvertently made himself unable to interact with woman in ANY context! Multiple times throughout the story when Lawrence has to interact with woman he鈥檚 obviously uncomfortable, and every time it鈥檚 entirely in a non-sexual context, but he still struggles because of how he鈥檚 only ever treated woman as a mere object of desire he must avoid.
A striking example is in the book during Adeyemi鈥檚 nighttime confrontation with Sister Shanumi. Lawrence hears the confrontation but he chooses to remain in his room, to stay ignorant, because he was uncomfortable with the notion of barging in on the possible scene between them. He even tells himself after the fact that he should have gotten up and confronted Adeyemi then and there! But because of what he鈥檚 drilled into his brain about woman he鈥檚 unable to make the right choice and it prolongs the suffering of everyone. Even when he takes Sister Shanumis confession he notes that the intimacy of their knees almost touching is uncomfortable to him. Even in this very serious situation he鈥檚 still unable to handle the intimacy of interacting with a woman, which is frankly laughable to how Sister Shanumi must have felt when sharing her horrible situation with him, the amount of bravery she needed to have compared to him.
I would not be surprised if Lawrence鈥檚 thought process around woman is the reason he too, like most cardinals, treated the sisters taking care of the cardinals like they were invisible. He doesn鈥檛 recognize this within himself until far into the conclave either. Who would guess that treating woman like they鈥檙e invisible would mean that he would overlook their work and effort?
My last observation is that Vincent contrasts Lawrence starkly in this regard. While Thomas struggles to interact with woman Vincent does not. He鈥檚 worked with woman all over the world in terrible situations and conditions, they have never been invisible to him, and because of that he鈥檚 able to do immense good for them and WITH them. It鈥檚 why he鈥檚 the only man who recognizes the work the sisters did for lunch and includes them in his prayer. He鈥檚 a foil to Lawrence, an example of how much less hindered a man is when he is able to view woman as simply human beings, not on a pedestal of temptation or an invisible helper.
My goal here is not to call Lawrence a sexist, because he鈥檚 not, and despite how much his thoughts have shaped his skewed views on woman he is still able to do immense good despite the fear, despite of how uncomfortable he is, and that is worthy of praise nonetheless. I merely want to illustrate how his mantra has made things more difficult for him and how it is not infallible.

love how lawrence is mildly suicidal at all times but also prevented from ever going through with it because the church Doesn't Like people who do that. so instead he just walks around hoping God kills him like the good catholic boy he is

When I saw gladiator 2 in theatres I misinterpreted an offhand remark about how Yuval had an arranged marriage with a man who was gay so I went the entire movie incorrectly thinking the gay husband was ACACIUS.
I genuinely thought this was their relationship the entire movie:

everyone gets so unreasonably mad at asuka for being pissed at shinji in the rebuilds which like. yes we're experiencing everything through shinji's eyes so the audience holds a bias towards him that the characters have no perspective on blah blah blah but i think you guys are also forgetting asuka is still a fourteen year old girl. weird age technicalities aside she spent fourteen extra years of life living in limbo & she has zero context for how it happened except that the actions of this dude (unknowingly or not) eventually lead to her constant suffering & also the destruction of the world as everyone knew it
the third impact isn't shinji's fault technically but the POINT is that the other characters either don't know that or don't really have it in them to care about that. on top of all that, the thing about asuka is that she's always chasing this kind of closure that she's rarely allowed to actually get her hands on & when she's finally freed from her own personal hell & gets her hands on the guy she thinks caused it, he's basically the equivalent of a dead fish
there's no satisfaction or closure to be found in being angry at someone who thinks they deserve it. ESPECIALLY given the state shinji is in after kaworu's death (basically a walking corpse mentally to the point he has to be force fed because he won't eat his will to live is THAT low) & all that does for asuka is make her angrier
think about it; you've blamed your suffering on one guy for years & then you finally get to confront him & he basically doesn't fight back at all & it feels like you're yelling at a dead body which only pisses you off more because it just makes everything feel pointless & you hate feeling like what you do doesn't matter so it's just this endless cycle of pain & anger & nothing ever gets resolved & also you are a fourteen year old girl who survived the apocalypse
i dunno man i love shinji he's literally one of my favorite characters of all time but you cannot fault asuka for this one. her (& others') response isn't supposed to be rational or logical or even make sense to the audience because she's a traumatized fourteen year old girl & the human heart is not "rational" that's kind of the entire point of evangelion you guys
