Delayed Expo 2020 Dubai may not have the same impact
It is “rational” to postpone Expo 2020 Dubai, but questions remain over whether the delayed event will have the same impact that it could have had before the coronavirus outbreak emerged, according to a United Arab Emirates-based retail executive.
Expo 2020 Dubai, which was slated to begin in October, may soon join the ranks of postponed international events, after its steering committee on Monday agreed to explore the possibility of a one-year delay.
“It was a natural decision to get to this recommendation,” said Alain Bejjani, CEO of retail giant Majid Al Futtaim. “It just makes sense, you cannot hold a global event … that will start in October of 2020 given where we are,” he told CNBC’s “Capital Connection” on Tuesday.
From music festivals to technology conferences and the Tokyo Olympics, many gatherings have been pushed back or canceled in a bid to slow the spread of the global pandemic.
Nearly 38,000 people have been killed by COVID-19, and more than 780,000 cases have been confirmed. According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the United Arab Emirates has 611 cases and five deaths.
Even after the coronavirus crisis improves, however, there may be long-lasting effects that could dampen the success of a delayed Expo 2020 Dubai, said Bejjani.
“The question continues to be — is Expo going to have the same impact that it was going to have in 2020, in a world that was so connected, and in a world that … where traveling was becoming more and more ubiquitous?” he asked.
“I’m not sure if the travel industry and the tourism industry will come back the way it used to be,” he said. “Or (if) it will take until 2022, 2023 for it to come back.”
‘Extremely resilient’
Separately, Bejjani also said he is “not really concerned” about the impact of the virus on the UAE.
“The UAE is extremely resilient as a market,” he said. Looking specifically at Dubai where tourism is usually a “big contributor,” he said residents, who are “continuously traveling,” have had to reduce their travels and spend more time in the city.
The government banned its citizens from traveling overseas from March 18 until further notice.
“I think that could sustain an acceptable level of the economy until things come back,” he said. “I do not see a big hit post pandemic … the direct pandemic impact, although it will definitely have a larger hit across the region, because some of the economies around us are not as resilient.”
Middle East economies such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE have responded to the coming economic pain by announcing stimulus plans. Riyadh has prepared a $13.3 billion package to help small and medium-sized enterprises, while Abu Dhabi will support banks and businesses with a $27 billion plan.
— CNBC’s Natasha Turak contributed to this report.

US blacklist led to $12 billion revenue shortfall
Visitors pass in front of the Huawei’s stand on the first day of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelonaon on February 27, 2017 in Barcelona.
Lluis Gene | AFP | Getty Images
Huawei reported slowing profit growth in 2019 as the U.S. blacklisting the Chinese technology giant weighed on its business.
Meanwhile, a top executive at the company told CNBC the impact from the coronavirus on its business is unclear.
Revenue for last year totaled 858.8 billion yuan ($123 billion), a 19.1% year-on-year rise in yuan terms. Net profit came in at 62.7 billion yuan ($9 billion), marking a 5.65% rise from last year. That’s slower than the profit growth of 25% reported in 2018 and 28% in 2017.
Eric Xu, rotating chairman at Huawei, told CNBC in an interview Tuesday that the company had missed its own targets. At the start of 2019, Huawei projected revenue of around 858.8 billion yuan or $123 billion, which it eventually ended the year with. But in April of last year, it was preparing to revise that target to $135 billion.
In May, however, the company was put on the U.S. Entity List, a blacklist that restricts American firms doing business with it. This included companies like Google which was no longer allowed to license its Android mobile operating system to the Chinese company.
Xu blamed the blacklisting for the $12 billion shortfall.
“We didn’t meet our revised targets, which was the $135 billion mark. We were short by $12 billion. This was the results of the U.S. sanctions,” Xu said Tuesday, according to a CNBC translation of his comments in Mandarin.
“We had to deal with the challenges around the supply continuity and we had to address the supply challenges in the short term, so as to supply certain products to our customers. And we also had to increase our R&D (research and development) investment,” Xu added, speaking about why the net profit growth slowed. This was according to a translation provided by Huawei.
Huawei faced a tough year in 2019 as the U.S. continued its campaign to try to get the company blocked from 5G rollout around the world. Next-generation mobile networks known as 5G promise super-fast data speeds and the ability to underpin future technologies like driverless cars.
Washington has maintained that Huawei represents a national security risk arguing that its networking technology could be used by China for espionage. Huawei has repeatedly denied the allegations.
Consumer weakness after Google block
A large part of Huawei’s revenue shortfall occurred in the consumer division which accounted for over 54% of the company’s total sales in 2019. It overtook Huawei’s core networking equipment business to become the biggest division in 2018.
“It is the consumer business of Huawei that was hurt the most,” Xu said.
The unit, which includes smartphones and laptops, brought in revenue of 467.3 billion yuan or $66.93 billion in 2019. That was $10 billion less than Huawei was targeting.
“We look at the consumer business, if everything goes on without being disrupted last year, the revenue from the consumer business would at least be $10 billion U.S. dollars more than the numbers we actually achieved,” he added.
He attributed this again to the effects of the U.S. blacklisting which meant licensed Google apps couldn’t be on its smartphones. That’s not a big deal in China where Google services are banned and Chinese consumers have alternatives. But in international markets, Huawei sells its phones with Google’s Android operating system which includes apps such as Gmail or Google Maps.
Huawei has now launched two flagship smartphones without licensed Google Android — the Mate 30 last year and P40 earlier this month.
The Chinese technology giant still managed to become the world’s second-largest smartphone maker by market share in 2019, overtaking Apple, mainly by doubling down on its efforts in China.
“China contributed to roughly three in five smartphones sold for Huawei globally in 2019 and this is about to rise further in 2020,” Neil Shah, research director at Counterpoint Research, told CNBC.
Supply ‘fully restored’ after coronavirus
The coronavirus outbreak in China earlier in the year forced the country to essentially shut down. It led to businesses remaining closed for a long period of time and factories shut down.
Huawei relies on manufacturing in China for everything from networking equipment to smartphones. But the company says its “production activities” in China are now “fully restored,” though it is too early to know the exact impact the coronavirus will have on its business.
“Now we are in a position to evaluate the level of impact from the pandemic on our market performance in China. But at this point in time, in light of the continued spread of the pandemic throughout the world, it’s very hard to tell how big the impact on our business might be,” Xu said.
When asked if Huawei will be able to meet the demand of its customers, Xu said it should be able to in the “short term,” but “if the coronavirus pandemic drags on and cannot be contained globally and some of our suppliers stop production, we are bound to run into difficulties over the long run.”

Lemon, Hayes Urge Networks: Stop Airing Trump’s ‘Dangerous’ Coronavirus Briefings Live
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and CNN’s Don Lemon have joined the growing calls for cable networks ― including their own ― not to broadcast President Donald Trump’s daily briefings on the coronavirus pandemic live.
Last week, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow said if it were to her “I would stop putting those briefings on live TV. Not out of spite, but because it’s misinformation.”
Hayes followed suit on Monday’s episode of “All In” when he noted how the briefings were “supposed to be about fact-based updates” but instead served as “propaganda sessions” for Trump, who was using them to spew misinformation and lies and attack journalists.
“They have morphed into something akin to Trump rallies without the crowds. The briefings are where he casts his failures in the most positive light,” continued Hayes, calling them “dangerous from a public health perspective.”
“It’s obviously above my pay grade, I don’t make the call that we take them or not, but it seems crazy to me that everyone’s still taking them when you got the My Pillow guy getting up there, talking about reading the Bible,” Hayes added.
“CNN Tonight” host Lemon, meanwhile, on Monday debated the idea of running snippets after the presser with fellow CNN anchor Chris Cuomo.
Cuomo was in favor of running the briefings live, saying there is “too much of a need for information.”
“I think we should do it afterwards and get the pertinent points to the American people because he’s never, ever going to tell you the truth,” said Lemon.
“It’s obvious, it’s transparent to me. Those press briefings have become his new ‘Apprentice.’ They’ve become his new rallies,” he continued. “And he treats the press and the media as if he’s talking to the people at his rallies. It’s the same thing. It’s no different except the audience isn’t there.”

Mercedes F1 team helps create breathing aid for coronavirus patients
In the space of just 10 days, University College London (UCL) and the Mercedes’ Formula One engine department were able to reverse engineer a breathing aid so that it can be rapidly produced to treat coronavirus patients.
The device, known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), is the sort regularly used by the NHS to support patients with breathing difficulties.
The sharp rise in severe cases of COVID-19 means the NHS is at risk of encountering a shortage in ventilators over the coming weeks, and the U.K. government recently called on industry to help increase the production of such equipment. F1 collectively answered that call under the banner ‘Project Pitlane’, with all seven U.K.-based teams offering their expertise to help the cause.
Tumblr media
Alexis Nunes, Nate Saunders and Laurence Edmondson discuss the latest F1 news amid the coronavirus pandemic and reveal their favourite of the paddock’s most animated characters. Listen to the latest episode
Since March 18, Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP), which supplies engines to the Mercedes F1 team, Racing Point and Williams, has been working with UCL to help scale up the production of CPAP machines. Starting by disassembling an off-patent device, the team at UCL managed to reverse engineer the design in less than 100 hours so that it is better suited for rapid mass production.
The new CPAP design has already been approved for use by the NHS and is being prepared for rapid rollout to hospitals around the country.
“Given the urgent need, we are thankful that we were able to reduce a process that could take years down to a matter of days,” Professor Tim Baker [UCL Mechanical Engineering] said.
“From being given the brief, we worked all hours of the day, disassembling and analysing an off-patent device. Using computer simulations, we improved the device further to create a state-of-the-art version suited to mass production.
Mercedes has won every Formula One championship since 2014. Mark Thompson/Getty Images
“We were privileged to be able to call on the capability of Formula One — a collaboration made possible by the close links between UCL Mechanical Engineering and HPP.”
Mercedes HPP boss, Andy Cowell, added: “The Formula One community has shown an impressive response to the call for support, coming together in the ‘Project Pitlane’ collective to support the national need at this time across a number of different projects.
“We have been proud to put our resources at the service of UCL to deliver the CPAP project to the highest standards and in the fastest possible time frame.”
CPAP machines have been used extensively in hospitals in Italy and China to help COVID-19 patients with serious lung infections to breathe more easily, when oxygen alone is insufficient. They work by pushing an air-oxygen mix into the mouth and nose at a continuous rate, keeping airways open and increasing the amount of oxygen entering the lungs.
Reports from Italy indicate that approximately 50 percent of patients given CPAP have avoided the need for invasive mechanical ventilation, which delivers breaths directly into the lungs but requires heavy sedation and connection to a tube placed into the patient’s trachea.

Chrissy Teigen Celebrates Her Breast Implants’ 10-Year Anniversary
Todd Williamson/E! Entertainment/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images
Chrissy Teigen is giving her two favorite gals a shout out: her breast implants.
Yes, you read that correctly.
The Cravings cookbook author took to social media on Monday afternoon to give us the content we so desperately need and deserve, especially with everything going on with the world amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
“happy 10 year anniversary to these t-tties,” the 34-year-old star quipped on Instagram, alongside a throwback photo of her girls looking picture-perfect on the runway. “And RIP to these teeth.”
Naturally, Chrissy’s cheeky post was filled with crying-laughing emojis that came from her famous friends like Paris Hilton, Lisa Rinna and many others.
“I love you,” Real Housewives of New Jersey star Melissa Gorga replied. “GOD BLESS,” model Tess Holliday wrote.
Despite paying tribute to her ta-tas, Chrissy recently opened up about her biggest regrets, which included getting breast implants at such a young age.
“Yeah, I did my boobs when I was about 20 years old,” she told Glamour UK, in which she was the cover girl for its Spring/Summer 2020 issue.
“It was more of a swimsuit thing. I thought, if I’m going to be posing, laid on my back, I want them to be perky,” she explained of her decision. “But then you have babies and they fill up with milk and deflate and now I am screwed.”
When asked if she got her boobs done due to self-esteem issues, she said that part of her body wasn’t an insecurity.
“Honestly, I kept them the same cup size,” she shared. “I just filled them out, so they are rounded and firmer. I had a quarter ‘teardrop’ cup in the bottom and filled out the breast line. But I want them out now. If I could do one thing, it would be to have a lift.”
However, Chrissy did open up about how her weight affected her confidence, especially since she worked in the modeling industry.
“I used to weigh myself every morning, afternoon and night. I knew what the scales would say after each meal. I did that for eight years and had this one weight I wanted to be at,” she shared.
She said having two kids with husband John Legend—Luna and Miles—changed all that, though.
And in case you’re wondering if Chrissy should replace her breast implants by now, she explained why she’s hestitant on doing so.
“I think you’re supposed to replace [implants] every ten years,” she told the publication. “But when you have kids you think about [the risks] of surgery and I think, ‘This is not the way I want to die, in boob surgery.'”

WWE WrestleMania 2020: How to watch, start times, full card and WWE Network
Brock Lesnar vs. Drew McIntyre headlines this year’s bizarre WrestleMania.
WWE
It’s unprecedented times, which calls for an unprecedented WrestleMania. This year’s show, on paper the biggest wrestling event of the year, is unlike any other in WWE history. Originally scheduled for Tampa, Florida’s Raymond James Stadium, it’ll instead take place at WWE’s Performance Center training facility in front of no fans. Much of it has reportedly already been taped. It’s spread over two nights, Saturday and Sunday, instead of the usual one-night extravaganza.
So yeah, it’s weird as hell. There are a lot of questions surrounding WrestleMania 36. Many pundits have criticized WWE for putting the event on at all, calling it a health risk. In an age of social distancing, watching between two and six people grapple with one another will be jarring for some. But as noted, much of it has reportedly already been filmed. So at this point, it only makes sense to try and enjoy.
Whether that’ll be possible, with no crowd for the wrestlers to perform to, is another question.
The main event of the show is Brock Lesnar defending his WWE Championship against Royal Rumble winner Drew McIntyre. Normally I’d say this would be a surefire great match, but, as you’re no doubt tired of hearing, it’s not normal times. Elsewhere, John Cena returns to face Bray “The Fiend” Wyatt and The Undertaker rises to face AJ Styles.
Roman Reigns is scheduled to wrestle Goldberg for the Universal Championship, but he’s since pulled out of the match. Who will take the reins and face Goldberg instead has yet to be officially announced.
Start times
WrestleMania 36 takes place in WWE’s Orlando, Florida-based Performance Center on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5. The main card starts both days at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. If you’re a WWE Network subscriber — at $9.99 per month, but free for one month for new subscribers — you can watch it live for free. Otherwise you’ll need to contact your local cable provider and pay a separate fee to watch.
Viewers in the UK will have to stay up late, as the show starts midnight Sunday and Monday. For Australians, WrestleMania starts at 9 a.m. AEDT time on Sunday and Monday.
Match Card
WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Drew McIntyre.

Global cases continue to climb
This is a live blog. Please check back for updates.
Global cases: More than 782,300
Global deaths: At least 37,582
Top 5 countries: United States (161,807), Italy (101,739), Spain (87,956), China (82,198), and Germany (66,885)
The data above was compiled by Johns Hopkins University as of 7:42 a.m. Beijing time.
All times below are in Beijing time.
1:24 pm: Southeast Asian countries step up measures to curb outbreak
Several Southeast Asian nations have stepped up measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus, according to Reuters.
The region’s largest economy Indonesia said it has decided to ban the entry and transit of all foreigners, reported Reuters. Foreigners with stay permit and some diplomatic visits may be exempted, the report said.
Meanwhile, Vietnam announced social distancing measures for 15 days starting Wednesday, according to a separate Reuters report. During the period, people are required to stay at home and can only can go out for emergencies or to buy goods, said the report.
As of Monday, Indonesia has confirmed 1,414 cases of the coronavirus, while Vietnam has reported 203 infections, according to their respective official tallies. — Yen Nee Lee
12:55 pm: Pandemic will hit profitability of Asia Pacific banks, says Fitch
Asia Pacific banks will find it increasingly challenging to maintain their financial performance as economies around the world get hit by the coronavirus pandemic, Fitch Ratings said.
The ratings agency earlier this month downgraded the outlook for 10 banking systems in the region to “negative.” All 17 banking systems in Asia Pacific that Fitch assesses now have a “negative” outlook.
But the outlook assessment doesn’t necessarily indicate that economies in the region face higher risk of financial instability, said Fitch’s Head of Asia-Pacific Bank Ratings Jonathan Cornish. — Yen Nee Lee
12:23 pm: Japan asks citizens not to travel to 73 locations
Japan’s foreign ministry has urged citizens not to travel to 73 countries and regions, including the U.S., Canada and the U.K., reported Reuters. That’s an increase from some 20 countries — mostly those in Europe — that Japan had warned its people not to visit in recent weeks, the report said.
The Japanese government is also likely to ban the entry of visitors from the newly added countries, according to the report.
The warning came as the number of cases in Japan continued to rise. As of Monday noon, the country confirmed 1,866 cases, 173 more than the previous day, according to the ministry of health, labour and welfare. — Yen Nee Lee
10:39 am: Japan prime minister and his deputy to avoid attending the same meetings
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his deputy, Taro Aso, will avoid attending the same meetings as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus outbreak, Reuters reported.
“Prime Minister (Shinzo) Abe told cabinet members this morning that Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso would not join a meeting where he attends,” Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Akihiro Nishimura said at a news briefing, according to Reuters.
In the event Abe is unable to fulfill his duties as prime minister, Aso will be next in line to become Japan’s interim leader. The country has at least 1,953 reported cases and 56 deaths, according to JHU data. — Saheli Roy Choudhury
9:26 am: China says manufacturing activity expanded in March, defying expectations of a contraction
China said the official Purchasing Manager’s Index for March was 52.0, beating expectations for an economy hit by the coronavirus outbreak. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected the official PMI to come in at 45 for the month of March, from a record low of 35.7 a month earlier.
China’s manufacturing activity slowed dramatically earlier this year as the government instituted large-scale lockdowns and quarantines to contain the spread of COVID-19. — Huileng Tan
9:23 am: Amazon fires warehouse worker who led Staten Island strike for more coronavirus protection
Amazon confirmed to CNBC that it fired Chris Smalls, a warehouse worker who organized a strike at its Staten Island facility on Monday.
The company said it fired Smalls after he “received multiple warnings for violating social distancing guidelines.”
Smalls and other employees walked out to call attention to the lack of protective measures for workers. They’re also urging Amazon to close the facility after a worker tested positive for the coronavirus. Organizers put the number of strikers around 50, while Amazon said it was less than 15.
“Amazon would rather fire workers than face up to its total failure to do what it should to keep us, our families, and our communities safe,” Smalls said in a statement. “I am outraged and disappointed, but I’m not shocked. As usual, Amazon would rather sweep a problem under the rug than act to keep workers and working communities safe.” — Annie Palmer
8:53 am: Los Angeles halts evictions for people and businesses who can’t pay rent due to COVID-19
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a halt on eviction in the city for people and businesses who can’t pay rent due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the state of California. Landlords are also barred from raising the rent on rent-stabilized apartments, Garcetti said.
“If you cannot pay the rent as a result of this emergency, you cannot be evicted,” Garcetti said. Residential tenants have 12 months and commercial tenants will have 3 months to pay after the emergency ends.
“The money owed by tenants won’t magically disappear, tenants still need to pay the rent if they can,” Garcetti said. — Kif Leswing
8:40 am: ‘Act quickly, act decisively, act robustly’ to stop coronavirus outbreaks, WHO special envoy says
David Nabarro, a special envoy on COVID-19 to the World Health Organization, told CNBC that countries need to act fast and stop the coronavirus outbreak before it grows into an exponential problem.
“This set of outbreaks that are making up the pandemic increase in scale exponentially; they double in size every few days, like every three days,” Nabarro told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday. “Trying to get in ahead of an exponential problem is much easier if you’re dealing with it early on.”
Countries are being forced to make difficult decisions at the moment to try and halt virus from spreading within their borders: They want to slow down the rate of infection to a level where their respective health-care systems can handle the strain. But, to do that, they are being forced to undertake strict lockdown measures that would undoubtedly have a severe impact on their economies.
“Act quickly, act decisively, act robustly, so that you’re not caught having to deal with a much bigger, bigger problem two weeks later,” Nabarro added. — Saheli Roy Choudhury
8:21 am: China says it had 48 new cases of infection
China’s National Health Commission said there were 48 new cases of infection reported on the mainland, all of which were attributed to travelers who returned from abroad. It added that one person died from the virus in Hubei province, where the outbreak was first reported. China says more than 76,000 cases have recovered from the disease and at least 3,305 died. — Saheli Roy Choudhury
7:19 am: US cases surpass 160,000
The total number of reported cases of coronavirus infection in the United States was at least 161,807, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. Among them, at least 2,978 have died and just over 5,500 people have recovered in the country, the data revealed.
Global cases continued their upward trend, standing at least 782,319 reported instances of infection worldwide, according to JHU. The data also showed the worldwide death toll stood at more than 37,500 as countries continued to implement stricter social distancing measures in an effort to slow the virus’ spread. — Saheli Roy Choudhury
7:10 am: Italy has more than 100,000 cases but says new infections have slowed
In one of the worst-hit countries in the global pandemic, Italy’s health ministry reported that as of 6 p.m. local time on March 30, there were at least 101,739 total cases of infection among its 60 million citizens. But the ministry said the rate of new cases declined; though Reuters reported that could also be due to fewer COVID-19 tests being conducted.
At least 11,591 people died and about 14,620 have recovered from the illness.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told El Pais newspaper that Italy was “in the most acute phase” of the outbreak and that it was reasonable to believe that the peak was near. But, concerns remain about another surge in the number of cases in the coming days. For its part, Italy is set to extend its nationwide lockdown measures at least until the Easter season, Reuters reported. — Saheli Roy Choudhury

6:41 pm: Department of Defense watchdog appointed inspector general for $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package
The Defense Department’s internal watchdog will serve as newly named chair of the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, a body created to oversee the roughly $2 trillion stimulus deal that President Donald Trump signed into law last week in response to the economic devastation wrought by the coronavirus outbreak.
Glenn Fine, the acting inspector general of the Department of Defense, was appointed by another committee of IGs assigned by the new law to name a chair.
Fine will oversee a board of fellow inspectors general, all responsible for monitoring their respective departments. They include the Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Justice, Labor, as well as the Treasury, the Small Business Administration and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. — Lauren Hirsch
6:35 pm: Airbnb extends coronavirus cancellation window to May 31, sets aside $250 million to pay hosts for missed stays
Airbnb announced it will allow guests to receive full refunds for any trips starting on or before May 31 that were booked prior to March 14, as the company continues to struggle through the coronavirus’ impact on the travel industry. The company will also set aside $250 million to pay hosts for the missed bookings.
Airbnb announced the decision in a letter sent to hosts in an effort to rebuild Airbnb’s relationship with its partners. Previously, the company had said that it would allow guests to cancel and receive full refunds for trips between March 14 and April 14.
That decision overrode many hosts’ existing cancellation policies that ensured they still received partial payments for those bookings. Many hosts harshly criticized Airbnb for that decision, and several told CNBC that they would be moving their properties onto other websites and into the long-term rental market. — Sal Rodriguez

3SBio Unveils 2019 Annual Results: Revenue Rises by 16.0%, Normalized Net Profit attributable to owners of the parent Jumps by19.4%, R&D Expenses Soar 45.2%
HONGKONG, March 31, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Chinese leading biopharmaceutical company 3SBio (01530.HK) today released its 2019 annual results, showing that the Company maintained steady growth, with core products continuously leading the market and more products being included into drug reimbursement lists. The Company has also been on track to advancing R&D pipelines, and stepping up efforts to introduce innovative therapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases into global markets. In the future, 3SBio will further boost its advantages with a comprehensive platform that integrates R&D, manufacturing, commercialization and investment cooperation, while consolidating and improving its status as a leading biopharmaceutical company.
Realizing sound business performance; sales of TPIAO exceeding RMB 2 billion
In 2019, 3SBio’s revenue rose by 16.0% year on year to approximately RMB 5.318 billion. Gross profit increased by 18.5% to approximately RMB 4.393 billion. Normalized net profit attributable to owners of the parent added by 19.4% to approximately RMB13.92 billion.
The Company’s four core products, including TPIAO, Yisaipu, EPIAO and SEPO, remained market leaders in China. Sales of TPIAO, which is the world’s only commercialized recombinant human thrombopoietin (“rhTPO”), for the treatment of thrombocytopenia, soared 39.1% to exceed RMB 2 billion, with its market share jumping to 73.2%. Yisaipu, a product to treat rheumatoid arthritis , ankylosing spondylitis and psoriasis, had a market share of 60.9%. Two recombinant human erythropoietin (“rhEPO”) products, EPIAO and SEPO, maintained market-leading positions, with their market share improving to 41.6%. As there is huge unmet demand for biologics in China, TPIAO and Yisaipu, which have low penetration rates, will see significant growth potential in the future.
Several of the Company’s products and indications have been added into the updated 2019 National Reimbursement Drug List (NRDL), including Shinuo, a fluticasone propionate cream for the treatment of multiple skin diseases, the new indication of Yisaipu for the treatment of adult patients with severe plaque psoriasis, and the new indication for EPIAO for the treatment of anemia caused by chemotherapy for non-myeloid malignant tumors. Humulin, a mixed protamine zinc recombinant human insulin injection, was upgraded to Class A from Class B in the NRDL. Byetta, a therapy for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes, was added into the NRDL through negotiations.
Also, Xenopax, the first approved recombinant humanized anti-CD25 monoclonal antibody injection in China, was granted the Chinese GMP certificate and launched in the market in October, 2019.
R&D expenses up 45.2%, with follow-up pipelines on ‘fast track’
In 2019, 3SBio’s R&D expenses soared by 45.2% to approximately RMB 527 million. The Company has its best-ever pipeline of biological cancer therapies, including anti-HER2, CD20, PD1, EGFR and VEGF antibodies. The Company’s pipeline of biological therapies for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, including anti-TNFa, IL-17A and IL-5 antibodies, has all made significant progress.
302H (Inetetamab), an anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody drug, has completed the technical review, clinical trial site inspection as well as manufacturing site inspection. An application for manufacturing approval of pre-filled aqueous injection solution of Yisaipu has been filed and accepted by the National Medical Products Administration, and it is currently under the review process.
In 2019, the Company’s drug candidates received five IND approvals, including: anti-PD1 antibody for the treatment of various cancers (simultaneous applications in China and the US); anti-IL-17A antibody for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis; TRK820 (Remitch) for the treatment of pruritus in hemodialysis patients; and HIF-117 capsules for the treatment of anemia. In February 2020, the Company’s anti-IL-5 antibody for the treatment of asthma was approved for a clinical trial.
The Company has also been proactively expanding new indications and second-generation products of existing products, including NuPIAO, a second-generation rhEPO; RD001, a pegylated long-acting rhEPO; and the pediatric ITP indication of TPIAO.
Also, the Company selected Verseau Therapeutics Inc’s VTX-0811, a monoclonal antibody targeting PSGL-1 for the treatment of multiple types of cancer, as the first licensed program under the partnership in the field of immuno-oncology.
3SBio’s R&D highlights in 2019
As of December 31, 2019, amongst the 32 product candidates within the Company’s active pipeline, 22 were being developed as National New Drugs in China (including registration Class I and Biologics Class II), including 11 in oncology, 12 in autoimmune and other diseases, 6 in nephrology, 2 in metabolic diseases and 1 in dermatology.
Expanding global presence in therapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases
In 2019, 3SBio was continuously expanding external partnerships and global presence for its innovative therapies in the fields of cancer and autoimmune diseases, including the partnership with global biologics giant Samsung Bioepis in South Korea for the development of biosimilar candidates; collaboration with Verseau Therapeutics in the United States for global clinical development of macrophage checkpoint modulators; partnership with Taiwan Liposome Company for the development of innovative liposomal products; and collaboration with Numab to develop new multispecific antibodies for cancer immunotherapy. The Company also invested GenSight and Sensorion to explore innovative gene therapies for ophthalmic diseases and innovative treatments for inner ear diseases.
In early 2020, the Company became a limited partner in the MPM Oncology Innovations Fund (INV), and agreed to make donation to support early-stage oncology research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world-leading cancer research and treatment center.
These collaborations demonstrated 3SBio’s excellent expertise in international development and operation, while laying a key stepping stone for its future globalization strategy. The Company will continue to pursue selective mergers and acquisitions and collaboration opportunities and explore cutting-edge innovative therapies in early stages, with an aim to enrich its existing product portfolio and become a leader in next-generation immuno-oncology therapies.
Comprehensive platform with strong competitive advantages
In the future, 3SBio intends to reinforce its position as a leading biopharmaceutical company in China by continuously leveraging its integrated R&D, manufacturing, commercialization and investment cooperation platforms. The Company will also focus on developing innovative biologics products to address unmet medical needs to benefit more patients.
The Company will fully integrate the R&D teams of nearly 400 people on multiple R&D platforms, and actively develop innovative therapies including monoclonal antibodies, bispecific antibodies, antibody fusion proteins, and cell therapies, thereby bringing a variety of treatment options to patients. The Company will kick off multiple phase III clinical trials this year, file new drug applications for more than 10 products in the next 3 years, and also submit IND applications for10-15 new monoclonal antibodies and bispecific antibodies (simultaneous applications in China and the US).
The Company has approximately 38,000-liter capacity in mAb facility, mammalian cell-based, bacteria cell-based and small molecule manufacturing facilities, and more than 27 years of experience in manufacturing biologics medicines. With large-scale production capacity that meets international quality standards, the Company is able to continuously supply the market with high-quality biologics. Over nearly 3 decades, the Company has been well recognized for its strong commercial operation capabilities and sales network throughout the country, which supports its sustainable growth.
Dr. Jing LOU, Chairman and CEO of 3SBio, commented: “Under the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic globally, 3SBio supports the country in our own way, through thick and thin. As we face a market environment where opportunities and challenges coexist, 3SBio is still maintaining strong growth momentum by leveraging our well-established systems that we’ve developed over the years. we will strive to overcome all difficulties, accelerate clinical applications and progress for our pipeline. We will also expand our production capacity and give full play to the advantages of our integrated platform. We aim to become a globally leading Chinese biopharmaceutical company, and continuously improve the availability of innovative biologics to benefit more patients.”

Stock futures largely flat following rebound from coronavirus sell-off
Stock futures pared earlier gains to trade largely flat early Tuesday morning, following the market’s rebound from its deep rout triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.
Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 4 points lower, pointing to an implied opening dip of around 30 points at Tuesday’s open. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq-100 futures also pointed to slight Tuesday opening losses for the two indexes.
The overnight action followed a strong session on Wall Street, with the Dow jumping nearly 700 points led by an 8% pop in Johnson & Johnson after it announced a vaccine candidate for the coronavirus. The S&P 500 rallied 3.4%.
Investors embraced a more realistic government approach to contain the pandemic. President Donald Trump extended the timeline for social distancing guidelines to April 30, which many believe will reduce economic damage in the long run.
“I think the market has established some type of bottom,” Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, said on CNBC’s Markets in Turmoil Special on Monday. “I don’t know if this is October ’08 here; We still have some wood to chop.”
Stocks have managed to rally on concerning economic data including last week’s record number of jobless claims and Monday’s worse-than-expected manufacturing reading from the Dallas Fed, Lee noted.
“If we are rallying on bad news, I think that’s a sign that we are probably at a bottom,” Lee said.
The market also built on last week’s historic rally, where the Dow and S&P 500 posted their best three-day win streaks since the 1930s. With Monday’s gains, the Dow is now up 20% from its coronavirus sell-off low reached on March 23 while the S&P 500 has risen more than 17% from those levels.
Still, the consensus on Wall Street calls for more selling before the market can hit a bottom. Historically, Bear markets are often punctuated by sharp bounces on their way down to a trough.
“Last week’s double-digit gain for markets was a welcome relief rally, though market bottoms are rarely as clean as this one has been,” said Mark Hackett, Nationwide’s chief of investment research. “Markets will need to reflect more traditional interactions before confidence in a bottom can be reached.”
Investors continued to grapple with the worsening outbreak in the U.S. as the confirmed cases rose to more than 153,200, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. has also officially become the country most affected. Trump said Sunday he hopes the country will “be well on our way to recovery” by June 1.
“We anticipate that market volatility will resist until liquidity, credit, and health risks have demonstrably passed,” said Lauren Goodwin, economist and portfolio strategist at New York Life Investments. “With major policy stimulus now in place in the U.S., we expect grim health and social news to dominate the next couple of weeks.”

Macy’s, Kohl’s And Gap To Furlough Most Of Their Employees Amid Coronavirus Pandemic
NEW YORK (AP) — Macy’s, Kohl’s and Gap Inc. all said Monday they will stop paying tens of thousands of employees who were thrown out of work when the chains temporarily closed their stores and sales collapsed as a result of the pandemic.
Macy’s said the majority of its 125,000 employees will be furloughed this week and that it is transitioning to an “absolute minimum workforce” needed to maintain basic operations. Macy’s said it has lost the bulk of its sales due to the temporarily closing of more than 600 stores starting March 18.
Kohl’s, based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, said that the furloughs will apply to 85,000 of its 120,000 employees at stores and distribution centers. It will continue to ship products and do curbside pickup from most stores with a limited number of staff.
Gap’s spokesman Sandy Goldberg said the furloughs affect nearly 80,000 out of 129,000 employees across all brands, including Banana Republic and Old Navy.
The furloughed workers will continue to collect health benefits.
The moves are bad news for an economy in which the retail industry supports one out of four workers. It is also perhaps the most dramatic sign that even big name retailers are seeing their business evaporate and that the $2 trillion rescue package passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump last week may have limited impact.
Nordstrom said last week it was furloughing a portion of its corporate staff. And shoe company Designer Brands Inc., which operates DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse, furloughed 80% of its workers, effective this past weekend.
Analysts expect more furloughs to come as retailers scramble to pay their employees from fast-dwindling cash reserves. Labor is the single biggest monthly fixed cost for retailers, according to investment research firm Cowen & Co.
The furlough of workers will have negative consequences for an economy in which the retail industry supports one out of four workers.
“This could push us further into a damaging recession that will last longer than the duration of the crisis,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail.
More than 190,000 stores, including J.C. Penney and Neiman Marcus, have temporarily closed, accounting for nearly 50% of the U.S. retail square footage, according to Saunders. Discounters, grocers and wholesale clubs that sell essential items like groceries remain open, although they have their own challenges of keeping up with shoppers who continue to stockpile canned goods, paper towels and other staples.
According to a recent report by Cowen & Co, department stores have enough cash to make it to about five to eight months with their stores temporarily closed. Macy’s and Kohl’s, however, have enough for five months, Cowen said. J.C. Penney and Nordstrom are better positioned at eight months of available liquidity, according to Cowen.
When announcing the temporary closures, most retailers said they would keep paying their workers but they were looking at a two-week timetable. That moment has now passed and the furloughs have become increasingly necessary as the coronavirus rapidly spreads.
The big question is how much of these furloughs will lead to permanent layoffs. Rent the Runway, a pioneer in fashion rental, confirmed earlier Monday, that it was laying off its retail store staff and said it may not be able to reopen its stores that temporarily shuttered earlier this month. Its online subscription service still continues to operate.
Swedish retailer H&M said earlier this month that it may be forced to permanently layoff some its employees after temporarily shuttering 3,441 of its 5,062 stores globally.
Coresight Research’s Deborah Weinswig now forecasts a new record high of 15,000 stores will close this year, up from her original prediction of 8,000 — all because of the viral outbreak. Analysts believe that already ailing stores with heavy debt loads may have to dramatically close more stores or be pushed closer to bankruptcy.
Even before the pandemic, traditional retailers, particularly department stores and mall-based clothing stores, had been struggling to reinvent themselves as shoppers shift more of their purchases online and embrace experiences like cooking classes and subscription services. Now, the pandemic has forced people to stay home and clamp down on spending for non-essential items like clothing.
Macy’s said that there won’t be as many furloughs in its online operations, which continue to operate. Employees who are enrolled in health benefits will continue to receive coverage with the company covering 100% of the premium.
“We expect to bring colleagues back on a staggered basis as business resumes,” Macy’s said.
To survive in the meantime, Macy’s, Kohl’s and others have taken steps to preserve their cash. That includes suspending their dividend, drawing down their lines of credit, freezing hiring and spending, and cancelling orders. Macy’s said Monday it is now evaluating all financing options.

Red Bull advisor considered a camp to infect drivers with coronavirus
Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko considered putting a camp together where his drivers could get infected with the coronavirus before the 2020 Formula One season resumed.
Alexis Nunes, Nate Saunders and Laurence Edmondson discuss the latest F1 news amid the coronavirus pandemic and reveal their favourite of the paddock’s most animated characters. Listen to the latest episode
F1’s season has been indefinitely suspended by the global pandemic. Marko, who runs the famous Red Bull programme which brought the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen into F1, said this period of inactivity was the perfect time for the company’s drivers to contract the virus to ensure they would not fall ill later in the year.
Mercedes F1 team helps create breathing aid for coronavirus patients
“The idea was to organise a camp where we could bridge this mentally and physically somewhat dead time,” Marko told Austrian TV station ORF. “And that would be the ideal time for the infection to come.
“These are all strong young men in really good health. That way they would be prepared whenever the action starts. And you can be ready for what will probably be a very tough championship once it starts.”
He added: “Let’s put it this way: it has not been well received.”

When approached by ESPN, Red Bull’s F1 team declined to comment on Marko’s quotes.
As well as the Red Bull team of Verstappen and Alex Albon, the Austrian company’s second team Alpha Tauri also competes in F1 with drivers Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly. It also has 10 junior drivers in various categories of racing affiliated to the programme in some way.
As with sports across the globe, F1’s 2020 race calendar has effectively been torn up by the coronavirus pandemic. Seven of the first eight races have been postponed, while the Monaco Grand Prix has been cancelled outright after organisers realised they could not fulfil their original date of May 24.
F1 CEO Chase Carey still hopes to put on 15-18 races this year in a best-case scenario based on starting at some point in the summer. Ongoing talks include the season extending into January next year in order to get through the backlog of rearranged races.
However, former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has suggested the championship will fail to put any races on this year.
Speaking to Reuters about what he would do if he was still in charge, Ecclestone told Reuters: “I think I’d have to say we’re going to close down talk of having any races this year. That’s the only thing you could do safely for everybody so nobody starts making silly arrangements which may not be able to happen.”

All the Details On Ben Higgins’ Intimate Proposal to Jessica Clarke
After announcing his engagement to Jessica Clarke over the weekend, Ben Higgins is giving us all the details from his intimate proposal.
During today’s episode of his Almost Famous podcast with Ashley Iaconetti, Higgins spilled all the tea about how he proposed to his girlfriend.
“We had stopped all intentional conversations about our future back in December because I wanted her to be so shocked for this proposal,” he shared. “So many longer that we were going to drag this on was just going to get harder and harder on this woman that I loved […] I had the ring and once you have the ring, it’s like impossible to not want to propose.”
When announcing their engagement on Instagram, Clarke shared the moment that Higgins got down on one knee. She wrote, “I don’t remember everything you said, but I know that I said yes. I woke up in a dream today and I get to live in this dream every day from now on.”
On the podcast, the former Bachelor star also shared that while the two lovebirds left to Nashville, Tennessee to self-isolate, he spoke to both Clarke’s parents and decided to propose to her there.
“It would be just as special, if not more special, to do it here at her [parent’s house],” he said. “Her brother, who is a great chef, was going to cook the dinner and we would do it in the backyard and we could surprise her with her favorite flowers, sun flowers, at the pond that she grew up on and I would take her on a walk down the pond to propose to her there.”
He went on, “We walk out the door, we’re walking down the road and I have the ring in my back pocket and I’m trying at that point to think about what kind of small talk I’m going to make and I get so awkward because Jessica’s my best friend, I love this girl and for whatever reason, I became a middle school boy talking to his school crush when I was on this like, ten second walk. I didn’t know what to say to her!”
Instagram
And in that moment, Clarke didn’t know she was getting proposed to either. According to Higgins, Clarke didn’t think “she was getting proposed to” especially given the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus outbreak. “She thought that we would have to do push back our proposal for months which made her really sad,” he shared.
Higgins then continued to gush about the moment he popped the question. “[I told her], Jessica you are the kindest, you are the most loving, you are the most supportive person I have ever met. You have loved me well, you have loved me in crazy circumstances and you’ve loved me in really great circumstances,” he recalled. “And then I just got down on one knee and pulled out the ring and she at that point didn’t know what was happening because her face was shocked!”
He added, “Her mouth was wide open. She doesn’t even say ‘yes’ when I ask her to marry me, she just shakes her head up and down and that’s it. And I go, ‘is that a yes?’ And she’s like, ‘uh yeah!'”
During the episode, the former Bachelor also opened up about their future plans leading up to their wedding.
For starters, the 31-year-old shared that the two won’t move in together before they’re married. “That is a choice we’ve talked about and we’ve gone back and forth on it,” he explained. “For a couple reasons we won’t. One is a lot of it is respect for my family and her family as well as lessons we’ve learned from past relationships.”
He added, “Jessica and I, we’ve abstained and tried to do this the best we can to make our relationship as healthy as possible and there are steps that we will take to do that and so that’s why right now we will not be living together before we’re married but I think we’ll be finding a house before then that we can both start to make our own.”
The news of the couple’s engagement comes more than two years after he and Lauren Bushnell broke up after being engaged for a year. Higgins and Clarke made their relationship Instagram official in February 2019.

Floyd Mayweather Tells NFL To ‘Stop Worrying’ About Antonio Brown Sexual Assault Allegations | Sports
Tumblr media
Floyd Mayweather is advocating for Antonio Brown’s return to the NFL.
Mayweather and Brown linked up on Instagram Live on Friday (March 27) to chat about Brown’s beef with the NFL. Mayweather shared his support and thinks it’s crazy his past is keeping him from playing.
After being cut from the New England Patriots in September 2019 amid sexual assault allegations, the 31-year-old was unable to get picked up by another team. But Mayweather told viewers that his skills should be the only thing that matter.

“They need to let you play in the NFL, man,” Mayweather told Brown over Live, as recorded by TMZ Sports. “They need to stop worrying about what you do on the outside. You can get arrested 40 times, 50 times. Do that got something to do with you catching the ball or what you doing on the field?”
During their conversation on Live, Mayweather also mentioned Brown’s issue with the NFL last summer over what helmet he could wear, calling it a conspiracy, The New York Post reports.
Mayweather continued by commending Brown’s ability to perform on the field.
“Just stay focused, you’ll get back in the NFL,” Mayweather said. “You’ll get back! There’s too much talent for them to let go down the drain!”
Brown replied, “I want to get it back. Tell ’em we can run it back, do this right!”

Tiger King on Netflix: 9 things you didn’t know about this weirdly addictive show
Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness on Netflix is the weirdly addictive new documentary series that has managed to do the impossible: Temporarily distract a nation stressed out by dealing with the coronavirus outbreak. The seven-episode series, directed by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, focuses on Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic, and his Oklahoma exotic-animal park. As of Monday, it was the No. 1 show on the streaming network.
When the show begins, Joe has an impressive blonde mullet, a flamboyant wardrobe, multiple husbands at the same time, and a raging feud with Carole Baskin, the owner of a big cat sanctuary. All of that is as tame as a bowl of warm milk compared to what comes next. Every element in Tiger King gets weirder, and every personality who comes on camera has a secret, a compellingly weird event in their history, or dozens of each. Joe runs for president and governor, tries for a country-music career, makes bizarre videos suggesting his rival fed her missing husband to her tigers and so, so much more.
Carole Baskin and Joe Exotic have a running feud that explodes in the Netflix series Tiger King.

There’s a strange comfort to be had in taking refuge in this specific brand of American craziness. For viewers self-isolating in their homes, it’s a reminder that the world was weird in so many varied ways before coronavirus. God willing and the creek don’t rise — it will one day get a chance to be that weird again.
Since the series was released on March 20, dozens of news stories and interviews have dug into the real people and events behind the show. Some spoilers ahead, but if you’ve already watched the series, read on for nine juicy tidbits that the show itself didn’t reveal.
That (mostly) isn’t Joe singing
In multiple episodes, Joe brags about his singing career, and songs such as “I Saw a Tiger” are heard. But anyone with ears can tell that the polished, country-music-veteran voice crooning the tunes doesn’t sound anything like Joe Exotic’s drawling speaking voice. Real musicians Vince Johnson and Danny Clinton were the real musical power behind Joe’s Milli Vanilli act. Johnson told Vanity Fair that they worked for free, thinking they’d earn fame from a reality show about Joe’s life. (Clinton died in October, TMZ reports.) The show’s directors, Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, told the L.A. Times that a fact-checker discovered that Joe did sing somewhat on certain songs, so they chose not to call him out on it in the show.
Don’t blame the tiger for that missing hand
In the first episode, Kelci Saffery, one of Joe’s employees, is seen immediately after being bitten by a tiger. Saffery chooses to have his hand amputated rather than undergo numerous operations, returns to work just five days later, and shows up throughout the show displaying a stump. Saffery has said from the beginning that he doesn’t blame the tiger, and though it’s not mentioned in the episode, the tiger was not put down. In a 2013 statement, Saffery said, “I broke protocol and stuck my hand in a cat cage instead of using the stick provided.” Actor David Spade interviewed Saffery in a video published March 27. “I just got complacent,” Saffery said about the injury. And the tiger didn’t pay the ultimate price for the bite. “(The tiger) wasn’t put down, we just moved it off of the park, off of display,” Saffery said.
John Finlay got his teeth fixed
David Spade, who’s admitted he’s obsessed with the show, didn’t just interview Saffery, but a number of other Tiger King cast members, including John Finlay, one of Joe Exotic’s romantic partners. Finlay was noteworthy on the show for only having a few visible teeth, but now he has full dentures and is almost unrecognizable. “It took a while,” he told Spade of his dental procedures. “But after I got ’em fixed the right way, they were perfect.” Finlay did tell Spade that he thought getting his teeth fixed was more painful than getting his 51 tattoos, and that the pink-shirt three-groom wedding seen on the show was all Joe’s idea.
Those alligators were famous
Tiger King is mostly about the big cats, although the reptile residents of the park have a sad storyline in one of the episodes when their enclosure catches fire. John Finlay told David Spade in his video interview that some of the alligators at the exotic-animal park came from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. He also said that working with the crocodiles and alligators was more dangerous than working with the big cats, in part because of the reptiles’ giant and threatening tails. Finlay also said that he’s not in contact with Joe Exotic at all, plans to get all the tattoos of Joe’s name covered up, and is engaged to a woman now.

That bungee-jump accident was even worse
John Reinke, former manager at Joe Exotic’s animal park, is shown many times putting on and taking off his artificial legs, and explains that he needs them because he was injured in a bungee-jumping accident. Like everything in Tiger King, that’s only half of the dramatic story. Back in 2010, Reinke explained his accident to The Oklahoman newspaper.  Not only did a pulley malfunction, sending Reinke tumbling 55 feet to the ground and crushing his legs, but he didn’t just land on the earth. He fell onto a 6-inch metal stake that pierced his colon and stomach, the paper reports, and was bleeding heavily. He later had more than 20 operations on his feet and legs.
Shaq is not Joe Exotic’s friend
Tiger King gets so weird that viewers might forget that NBA star Shaquille O’Neal briefly shows up in an episode. But on March 25, O’Neal said on The Big Podcast with Shaq that the two are not pals. He said he loves tigers and visited the park a few times but “had no idea all that stuff was going on.” He said he still loves the animals and has made donations to support them, but is not close to Joe Exotic. “I was just a visitor,” O’Neal said on the podcast. “I met this guy, not my friend, don’t know him, never had any business dealings with him.” And don’t go to the athlete’s house expecting to see big cats, though he could certainly afford them. “Do I own tigers personally at my house?” O’Neal said. “No.”
Petting the cubs has a dark side
Joe Exotic earns money by charging visitors to come to his exotic-animal park and take photos cuddling with the big-cat cubs. But directors and writers Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin told the L.A. Times that they never gave in and cuddled the the baby cats, especially after what they saw. “Most of the tigers we were around were subjected to abject cruelty,” Chaiklin said. “We saw babies being torn from their mothers and screaming. They’d get sick from being handled so much and get ringworm and mange. It was disturbing.”
Carole’s missing husband is still missing
A large part of the series focuses on Joe Exotic’s nemesis, activist Carole Baskin, whose husband Don James disappeared in 1997. Joe Exotic, who is now serving 22 years in prison for charges related to Baskin, claims over and over in the series that Baskin killed James and fed the remains to her big cats. On the website for Big Cat Rescue, her animal organization, Baskin refutes how she was portrayed in the documentary. “(The directors) did not care about truth,” she says. “The unsavory lies are better for getting viewers.” As for Don James himself, his disappearance remains a mystery. On Monday, Hillsborough, Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister even tweeted out a request for anyone with any leads in the case to call him.
Joe loves the publicity. Duh.
You couldn’t watch more than a minute of Tiger King and not realize Joe Exotic adores fame and publicity. Even though he’s now in prison, the directors told the L.A. Times that Joe knows the show has made him famous, and he’s overjoyed “He is absolutely ecstatic about the series and the idea of being famous,” Goode told the paper. “He’s absolutely thrilled.” And the directors aren’t buying Joe’s sudden change-of-heart. “He is in a cage and of course he’s gonna say that he now recognizes what he did to these animals,” Goode said.
