"'I have led a toothless life,' he thought. 'A toothless life. I have never bitten into anything. I was waiting. I was reserving myself for later on--and I have just noticed that my teeth have gone. What's to be done?'"

i have John Carter thoughts...
he does not know how to be sick. by that, i mean he has a tendency to pretend he's not sick. he does his best to hide it from others, choosing to get better on his own and, as a result, suffer on his own in silence.
he's probably like this because when he was a kid, rather than concern, he would get irritation or even anger from his parents. when he tells them he's feeling sick, they probably accused him of faking it for attention or to get out of doing something. when they realize he actually is sick, they would blame him. maybe something along the lines of "it's because you didn't wear your jacket" or "it's because he didn't go to sleep when he was supposed to." it would be irrational, of course, but try to explain that to a little kid.
John learns after a while that if he's feeling bad or if he gets sick, he'll have to take care of himself. so he learns what medicine to take. knows to ask for warm soup at mealtimes (because i highly doubt his parents are eating with him). and it's just part of a long list of ways he learns to self-soothe.

For like, 30 years, I've had to watch people watch "Secrets and Lies" and cry about how MEAN AND AWFUL Carter was or whatever the fuck (because of the goddamn ship war).
THE BEST PART of ER having a Renaissance is that people with brains are watching it now and going "oh, hey, that whole thing where they gloss over an 11 year old being raped is fucked also why is everyone fucking awful to Carter about it in this fucking episode? Seems weird and out of character." *
Everytime someone watches "Secrets and Lies" and hates it for the right reasons, an angel grows its wings, crops are watered, etc.
*I would argue it's not out of character for this version of Susan who is awful from the time she comes back to Chicago. she is truly a pod person. RIP Susan 1.0, you would have hated this woman.

Not a man of many words anyway, Benton does not say anything during the intervention, from which a defiant Carter storms out and quits. Benton follows his mentee and former med student outside.
Carter breaks down and collapses into Benton's arms, where Benton, in a rare public display of affection, gently kisses his head. The final scene shows a downcast Carter on an Atlanta-bound flight to a treatment facility. The shot then slowly pans out to reveal Benton sitting next to him. "That was a nice surprise with the pan across to see that no matter what, Benton is there for Carter, he was not the warm and fuzzy, 'I love you' guy. He wasn't that guy with words, except for with his son, but he was that way with his actions," the three-time Emmy nominee says. "I think that people really got into it because it was such a great foundation for such a strong bromance, like these two men loved each other whether they could say it, or one could say it, or whatever. So to me, that was a scene about love. And so that pan really captured, 'If you have to go to hell, I'm coming to hell with you, and I will always be there for you.' So I think that really came through."
- Eriq La Salle during an interview on May 16, 2025. May 18 marks the 25th anniversary of the Season Six finale “May Day”

i actually never ever want AO3 to be censored bc nothing is more fun than reading the tags on a fic and going “huh. didn’t know there was a market for that.”
