I am someone who complains nonstop about MMA culture and business and one of the biggest complaints I’ve had about the MMA community is how it did Fallon Fox. I’m glad to see Dr. Rosi Sexton come out in support of trans athletes. Especially now, when in her home country of England and in the USA, the center of the MMA world, there are political forces are ramping up attacks on trans people’s lives. You should all read the whole thing, but here’s an important part I’ll share for Tumblr.
“Let’s tackle the most common, and most pernicious, falsehood: Trans women competing in sport are men who self-identify as women in order to gain an unfair advantage. In order to compete in most competitive sports, trans women have to satisfy strict criteria to prove that they have undergone hormone treatment. They have suppressed testosterone levels for a certain period of time (often a minimum 12 months). On top of that is the description of a trans woman who has undergone hormone treatments as “biologically male.” Although biological sex has a number of different elements to it, hormones play a significant role, especially when it comes to performance. The idea that someone who isn’t trans would do this just for an athletic advantage is absurd. In the history of trans people in sport, since Renee Richards competed in the Women’s US Open Tennis Championships in the late 1970s, that has literally never happened.”

I’m really sick of people who love this sport & martial art, and are not themselves extremists or bigots/misogynists, seeing these things happen and being willing to look the other way because they’re “heroes” of the sport. I’m not looking the other way. This is not even an attempt at at a comprehensive list.

Replace “wrestlers” with “grapplers” and “working” with “training” and you have the poor unsuspecting family members of pent up martial artists everywhere. 😇🥋🤼♀️

For the love of god, if it’s possible for you*, please keep your membership active if you attend a martial arts school during its downtime. They will not survive a couple months with no income, and I bet you want them to reopen their doors at some point.
It’s not at the scary point yet, but there have been multiple cancellations at my gym because of social distancing. If this attrition rate were to continue, I don’t know if we could survive this. The school is doing everything it can to quickly pivot to online lessons, but it’s not something that everyone has the ability to do.
On that note, cancelling an appointment with your hairstylist? Offer to pay them for it. Cancelling on your house cleaner? Offer to pay them for it. We have to take care of eachother as best we can, so we can come out on the other side basically whole.
*obviously, if the pandemic has hit you in the pocket book or affected the stability of your employment, I’m not talking to you. You do what you need to do.
