MAVERICK RECOGNIZES HIMSELF IN PHOENIX IN WAYS HE HADN'T EXPECTED. primarily in this drive she seems to exhibit, no different from his. but that's what makes them both some of the best pilots the navy's seen.
he gives her a nod and a small smile, a hint of warmth through it. his gaze lingers on her for a moment, trying to decipher if she's lying, but decides to play along anyway.
“ good, ” he says. “ you're early. i hope you've at least had some breakfast, but the food here isn't the best. you know you don't get bonus points for showing up before anyone else, right? ”
mav said to nat, "You look tired." @aviates
Nat looks up, posture straightening. Quickly, she inhales, a half-second beat to compose herself.
"Yes, sir," she replies, more an acknowledgment that she's been spoken to than outright agreement with his statement. The blunder registers; her gaze lowers briefly. While her cheeks don't heat, Nat's long since lost the urge to blush when embarrassed, she feels caught all the same.
"No," Nat now corrects. "I'm alright."

THE PROBLEM WITH THE HARD DECK IS THAT ITS NAVY - FRIENDLY MANNER OF BUSINESS IS AN INVITATION TO ALL NAVAL MEMBERS REGARDLESS OF RANK. and if fritz were to be honest, his method of relaxation doesn't include any instructors from TOP GUN. it makes him feel like someone's watching him to try to get him into some sort of trouble, a product of growing up the way he did, a young troublemaker whose parents and teachers were rapidly losing hope for. while he has certainly matured, there are still those antics, the tendency to tease and poke at someone as if to provoke them. especially when he wants them to leave.
he'd been working on calleigh for the better part of the evening, trying to get her to leave the premises and leave the aviators and the veterans to committing their tomfoolery for the night. the air is always different when they know someone of a certain rank is around, akin to how drivers always slow down when they see a police car.
@cduquesne : "You can't get rid of me that easily." / FORCED PROXIMITY TROPE
an audible sigh is pushed through billy's mouth, defeated. it's rare to have such a formidable opponent. he's certain maverick would've left an hour ago if it were him on the hot seat. “ fine, you win, ” he says, ever - dramatic. “ but you have to promise you're here as one of us. not as a spy for cyclone or the other higher ups. ”
#hi <3#finally replied to this one!! we love calleigh in this house even though the muses aren't good at showing it <3#cduquesne#★ ❯❯ avalone‚ billy : ic.#queued.

“ YOU TAKE PICTURES, RIGHT? ” billy asks @betterland, gesturing to the camera in catriona's hands. way to state the obvious. a smirk forms across his features, boyish and troublesome, the direct result of the things people have said to him. IF YOU WEREN'T A NAVY PILOT, YOU'D BE A GREAT MODEL WITH THAT JAWLINE. and of course he believes it. “ people have told me i could be a model. just a thought. ”

IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY, NATASHA TENDS TO CONNECT TO THOSE SHE COULD CONSIDER SOME SORT OF ROLE MODEL. calleigh seems to be the perfect fit for what phoenix requires, considering what they all learned about rooster recently. leave it to bagman to be the bearer of news. while natasha is well aware of people's rights to keep their secrets, despite not being shy about her own familial wounds, she wishes rooster wouldn't be as private as he is. he's a closed book, especially now that they're here in north island, back at top gun. up until the big reveal, the only thing bradley shared with her was how maverick pulled his papers without any clue as to why.
she'd asked calleigh to spend time with her to pick her brain after class. here they are after calleigh's lesson, sitting in her classroom at top gun. phoenix is putting her notes away and mentioned off - hand how strange rooster's been acting. YOU KNOW HIM, RIGHT? she'd asked calleigh. OR HIS FAMILY AT LEAST? HE'S BEEN ACTING WEIRD LATELY, MORE CLOSED OFF THAN USUAL. HE SEEMS TENSE. I THINK MAVERICK HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. HE NEEDS TO GET HIS ACT TOGETHER. THE LAST THING I WANT IS TO BE FLYING A DANGEROUS MISSION WITH HANGMAN. disdain for the latter man disguised as concern for the former. maybe if there were any other aviators with half the skill hangman and rooster possess, she wouldn't be so worried. but of course, the concern isn't all false, she does care for bradley, even if he prefers to keep everyone at an arm's length.
@crimscene : "You and I are the only ones who can deal with this." / FORCED PROXIMITY TROPE
natasha nods. she supposes calleigh is right, that outside of the two of them, no one really knows rooster. not like they do, anyway. before the detachment, she and rooster were friends, he was someone she felt like she knew despite the secrets he wouldn't confide. “ I THINK, OUT OF ANYONE, IT'S YOU WHO CAN TALK HIM OFF THIS LEDGE. he's gonna get washed out if he keeps acting like this. ”

ROOSTER CAN FEEL HIS PATIENCE WEARING THIN IN HANGMAN'S PRESENCE THOUGH HE SUPPOSES HE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL. after all, no one else showed up for him tonight. still, it doesn't stop him from being annoyed at the other's sheer cockiness. it was a reason why bradley hates being in need. it's a common knowledge between them that jake could easily find the right button to push to piss him off and get the tensions rising. with both of them in the same vicinity, things could get ugly real fast. yet, somehow, they're always in each other's orbit.
bradley's only half - listening to whatever jake is saying, not caring at all about his lack of plans and what allowed him to pick up the phone. none of that really matters when they're both right there, in jake's pick - up, with his designated driver going on and on about how happy he is that rooster needed something from him. he would pay for this at some point, rooster knows it. he's already dreading that day. fucking anticipatory grief.
“ you know what an uber does have, though? a quiet ride option, ” bradley retorts with a lazy half - smirk, the only evidence of humor, with his gaze straight ahead on the road in front of them. “ my night's no different from yours. hey, there's a dairy queen up ahead, mind if we go? i need something greasy. don't worry, it's my treat. ”
jake is playing it cool, as if this is just another day of playing designated driver to a buddy. sure, he could dig a little further, it wouldn't be too hard to get on rooster's nerves in any situation. he knows exactly which buttons to press for a reaction. but let's see where this goes first, let's make this interesting. hangman is all smiles as they drive off, giving his ol' friend (loose definition) a pat on the shoulder. someone needs to, since poor bradley here is clearly at a point of desperation.
"well, rooster — i thought i'd take the night off for myself today. catch up on some phone calls, watch a couple reruns, nothing crazy for me. figured if you're calling, it must mean you're in real need of a favour too, so why not?" they stop at a red light, giving jake the perfect opportunity to flash that winning smile right his way.
"but not to worry! i'll get you home in one piece, as long as you don't hurl in my truck. y'know, uber charges people for that? taxis too." a little tsk, tsk sound. "don't sweat it though, i'd never do that to you." now, that's not the kind of debt he likes to hold over someone's head. "now, how's your night going? we might as well catch up, since we're here."

STARTER CALL.
THE AIR IS THICK AND HUMID, NEVER BEEN SOMETHING FRITZ HAS BEEN A FAN OF, BUT HE DECIDES HE WON'T LET THE POOR WEATHER GET THE BEST OF HIM. he's been in search of things to do in his down time, not in any mood to stay inside and play video games with some of the guys. there's an ebb and flow in their routine, some days it feels fine to play along with them, while others, he craves something different. it was also nearly time for dinner, so he's been wandering around through his apps to find some place nice to go, until he'd heard some of his fellow aviators talk about some fast food restaurant close enough to base. they all agreed to go and were gonna carpool, leaving fritz to meet them there and go on his own vehicle. he prefers to ride alone, anyway. this way, he gets to pick the music.
as he's heading out, he spots @lovedunexpectedly out of the corner of his eye. billy thinks to himself for a moment, before calling out to beru : “ hey, ice tea! ” he swaggers over toward her, friendly grin across his features. “ a bunch of us are going to get dinner at this fast food place close enough to here. you wanna come? come on, you gotta miss eating something other than the slop here. ”

STARTER CALL.
THE COFFEE SHOP IS STARTING TO GET CROWDED, an unfortunate consequence of the place being located near the campus. bradley's studying one of his general courses, the ones that are merely meant to be crossed off the list. he's already finished his coffee, his second one for the day, and he doesn't think he can stomach another. as he looks around the place, between the forming line and students in search of a place to sit, to those around him who were there when he initially sat down, he feels somewhat guilty, like maybe he should leave and give up his seat to someone else. he turns toward @seamotifs, looking to jane as if a moral compass. “ should we leave? or do we double down and order more drinks? ”

STARTER CALL.
THE HARD DECK IS DIMLY LIT AND CROWDED, not at all unfamiliar for the bar located near the naval air station. rooster's sat by himself at the counter, a rare night for him to be alone, away from the company of phoenix, fanboy, and the rest of his squadron. it's nice to be given time for himself, time to think and reflect. it's been a tough few days for bradley, unable to shed his past and leave the ghosts behind. between being in his father's shadow in the eyes of the higher ranks, despite how hard he tries to prove he's nothing like him or his uncle figure, and maverick's presence, the mission went from being something special and rare to a reunion the young bradshaw man didn't necessarily sign up for.
rooster looks up from the counter his gaze was fixated on and sees @crimscene. his mouth flattens into a line at the sight of her. where calleigh would usually radiate warmth, kindness, a soft spot of light in a somewhat cold environment such as the military, she also represents a bond that had been formed when rooster was a child when he lost his father. families that wanted to be there for one another, a fraternity that one couldn't help but take part in due to the nature of their circumstances. a sigh parts his mouth. “ did maverick ask you to babysit me tonight? ” he asks, accusatory. he'd been making an attempt, however useless, to steer clear of her and most of the others who know the long history between his family and maverick, wanting no part in any attempts to mend his and pete's relationship. “ you don't have to do anything just cuz he asked you nicely, you know that, right? ”
