I can name three writers/directors off the top of my head who said Shiro and Keith need to kiss.

Creatives recognize where a story should go. Sure, upending readers/viewers with the unexpected is a thing, but there's also setting up a clear foundation for expectations, and Sheith has that foundation in spades.
