This!!!! A lot of people who doesn't see HotD with "queer glasses" will never understand that Rhaenicent's appeal is its tragedy. No one is expecting a happy ending (especially if you have read the book). I'm not even expecting a confession because the both of them are way past that, but its there. The connection, the longing, the desperation to reconcile to bridge the gaping rift, feelings and apologies left unsaid, its all on the surface bubbling. But the both of them are in too deep because of the men who have always wanted to wage war, of the children they have to protect, of the duties they have to fulfill. Honestly shippers or not the people behind the show wants to convey the same thing. Its sad (and frustrating) to see that a lot of these points are missed by most "fans" because they badly want the show to be one-dimensional as the book or they want to only see the headcanons they have created when they read the book. Rhaenyra and Alicent's story is written that way not to "queerbait" (as what others say), its a symbol/metaphor of something deeper that the showrunners and writers want people to see.
P.S. This is just the way I see it. We can all have our own interpretations.
rhaenyra and alicent's relationship gets to me because it's pure tragedy. and their tragedy is not (SPOILER i guess) each of their deaths during the dance, but everything that happens before. the tragedy of alicent being forced to build a "romantic" relationship with viserys, and rhae only finding out about it when the betrothal is formalised.
the tragedy of alicent being made to birth rhaenyra's opponent (and here is another tragedy, rhaenyra growing distant of her own siblings because she convinces herself they are her opponents).
of building some trust again, of being in the cusp of a renewed friendship, but not enough for rhaenyra to confide to alicent about the pleasure house. the tragedy of rhaenyra swearing on her mother and alicent having to find out about the lie from criston's mouth, and being told by her father it's her fault for believing her beloved old friend that he is being sent away, that if her children are put to the sword it'll be her own fault as well.
of not even ten years being enough to help them trust each other again, that they have apparently found more and more ways to hurt one another, that alicent makes not so subtle comments about rhaenyra's sons' true father. that alicent, unwillingly, utterly and completely unwillingly, causes the death of that father.
of the resentment of the mothers passing to the kids and ultimately causing the loss of aemond's eye. of rhaenyra's panic of losing the throne making her cruel towards her injured brother and alicent seeing that her father might be right, that her children might die because of the heir's greed. of the first time in what might be years that they hold each other is with alicent holding a knife to rhaenyra's face, with them exchanging cruel words and alicent making rhaenyra bleed with a targaryen blade (and the parallels with valyrian wedding customs are incredible, i hope it was intentional).
of seeing one another six years later, tensions high but still longing for each other. of what could have been an excellent dinner with their families, of "and for that she has my gratitude, and my apology" and "you will make a fine queen". getting to hold each other again, this time softly, alicent caressing rhaenyra's arm (the one with the scar maybe? can't remember), pleading for her to come back to king's landing soon.
of a relationship built again, except the father, the husband, dies, with his last words being misunderstood and alicent having to act on it, because her husband asked her to put their son on the throne, and how could she disobey? the horrifying realisation that the small council has been planning to overthrow rhaenyra for months, and yet still doing everything she can to protect the old heir, to protect her friend. "you must reject this counsel" being almost pleading because she knows the power otto could have over aegon.
of a page ripped years ago "so you remember" being the last resource alicent has to beg rhaenyra to accept the terms that could keep her alive, of rhaenyra's tears and promise to consider it, to give up what she has been fighting for for years. but a son kills a son, and it all falls down.
in hotd the dance is (in part) the tragedy of two girls who loved, might have been in love with, each other, but their relationship was destroyed by the men around them and now they are women trying desperately to keep themselves and their loved ones safe while also trying to hold to each other, but never getting there before something else ruins it.

OP is correct go to Ao3 or Twitter right now and you'd see people "changing canon" because they are shipping Lucerys and Aemond (Aemond had a hand in Lucerys' death both in book and show).

This has been on my mind since after episode 7 and I don't see anybody talking about it (so I'm not sure if I'm the only one seeing that way). "Where is Duty? Where is Sacrifice?" in episode 7 made me think that both Rhaenyra and Alicent have sacrificed not just their childhood but each other for the sake of duty. Alicent was pushed to marry a man as old as his father and birth him children. Rhaenyra was made heir and it became an even bigger responsibility when Viserys told her about that prophecy. The crown is now bigger and heavier. She has to prove she's worthy in front of everybody (twice as hard because she is a woman) and do everything that she could to make sure that she would be able to uphold the legacy passed onto her. Rhaenyra sacrificed Alicent (because she promised her father she would support him and do her part to uphold their legacy). Alicent sacrificed Rhaenyra (because that's her duty engraved to her, that she has to marry a man in power to please her father, that she has to follow everything that he says). The saddest thing is they both don't know that they were each other's first (and probably heaviest) sacrifice they had to make in order of duty. King's landing is a pit of vipers and what they had is the only thing that was truly theirs and theirs alone. It was ripped away from them.
P.S. If people think that them holding into these feelings is making them weak. I think you're wrong simply because still holding onto those feelings after a lot of drastic changes in their life, after a lot of people influencing them throughout the years, shows deep resolve and belief that what they had is real. That's big, when you live in a place where people keep relationships as long as it serves them(discards them if not) and changes sides in a blink.

The actresses felt it was queer the show runner confirmed a sort of unrequited love and the plot certainly leaves no room for misunderstanding that these two women have been robbed of all their happy ever afters together

book stans are so annoying when in comes to rhaenyra/alicent shipping, like you know damn well no one is shipping the book version, be serious. the show can’t and won’t be completely faithful to the source material, if grrm can accept this, then so can you. rhaenyra and alicent’s relationship in particular has been completely different since episode 1. no one is shipping rhaenyra with laena bc they had one short scene together. it’s time to let it go.
and not to be bitter but i just know that if these were 2 male characters whose relationship and past friendship were central to the main conflict of the series, written exactly the same, (not to mention a romantic interpretation being supported by the writers and the actresses), it would be the most popular ship of the show with thousands of fics already, regardless of what happened in the books.

If people in 2016 had made jokes about Sansa’s rape by Ramsay people would have been outraged. Horrified. Disgusted. Completely inappropriate.
So why does Team Black keep on making jokes about Alicent’s rape and think it’s okay?

Rant about this Gaylor stuff
Hetlors coming onto gaylors at any given chances for their "dirty thoughts", "unrespectful behavior" and so on and so forth because "taylor swift is straight" and "to stop assuming her sexuality"; first of all "who cares" like if you don't agree with what someone think go on on your day, block them, block the topic. I'm seing too many of you going after gaylors, posting your opinions under their posts or tags. Every is free to have an opinion, everyone is free to express it. You don’t agree and you know you will never agree with it, then you leave and don’t interact with the people/subject. You all are like little soldiers coming to defend her straightness (which I may say is a bit hypocritical, because as far as I know saying she is straight is also assuming her sexuality, but I guess her being queer is such an horrible and far reaching thought that it must be taken down quickly). I need you to stop a moment, look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself what does it bring to your life to defend TS sexuality like that. To go off after people like that. Are you getting pay or something? Everyone (gaylors and hetlors) is just making speculations (based on facts, hints, etc...), but at the end of the day YOU don't know s*, I don't know shit, NOBODY knows what she identifies as except HERSELF and the people she trusts with this information.
Some people have superiority complex because they are hetlors or because they got a/multiples notice from TS herself or TN, well you're not her friend, you are just a fan and at the end of the day, you just know what she wants you to believe. She is a celebrity but she is also a human. She has an public image and the person she is in her personal life. Just because you can get a glimpse of the latter, that doesn't mean that YOU KNOW HER
Going back on assuming someone sexuality. Truth is that it might be not morally okay to do it, but you do it anyway consciously or not. Not to get into cliché but you see a guy with long painted nails, make up and idk heels, you think (even for 1 second) "oh he's gay". You assumed his sexuality. Maybe you're right, maybe not. Queer people tend to "recognise" themselves through signs or references. There are wordings, imagery, and many stuffs used in the queer community. So when someone tells you "well you know as queer I do recognise or I relate to some of TS actions or lyrics, so maybe she is queer too" and you first reaction is to insult, dox, or tell the person to k word, you are a disgusting human (I'm staying polite). If there are queer people upset about YNTCD video and if lesbians are upset about her using the term lavender (which is FACTUALLY a historical lesbian term, you can put it in any way you want but it is what it is) well they have the right to be upset about the fact that a *publicly* straight cisgender rich white woman is using/appropriating/hetwashing queer/lesbian things
Also did some of you ever study? Because I'm sorry but if you take her discography and you study her lyrics in depth, it can be interpretated as pretty queercoded whether you like it or not. As someone who is having some LGBTQ (and I can go as far a feminism) classes, it sometimes does feel like these women writers/ poets/ or even random people back in these old century who through hidden messages were expressing their sexuality and whose messages are now analysed as queercoded. It is also a fact.
I won't go into what I think TS should or shouldn't do. It is not my life. I don't know her. I don't know her situation and it is HER life. I couldn't care less if she is straight (althought I will admit that I would feel a bit upset) or if she is straight (even if I will admit that a celebrity of her status coming out would be huge). It is not something that keeps me up at night. What I think is MY opinion, I know at the end of the day that I know NOTHING.
Side note: even if we are in 2022, the entertainment industry is still an industry. Practices like closeting, PR relationships, lavender marriage are still actual. It is not because the LGBTQ+ community seems more accepted than before that it actually is. Practice are still used to keep some things hidden from the public. So if (big if) TS is queer and in the closet maybe it is because of the industry, maybe it is because she doesn't want to be out. Who knows.
I will finish by saying that I believe that Taylor Swift has really mastered the art of keeping both her straight and queer side of the fandom active. Enough references and lyrics to satisfy the hetlors while keeping the queer speculations alive.
