“Don’t politicize this” people can shove it up their collective chambers, I got desensitized to this stuff after Virginia Tech, everything after Pulse has just been me saying “So are we actually going to do something NOW?” because honestly I’m sick and tired of this. 

The second amendment is broken.

The Founding Fathers didn’t think that we’d be stupid enough to A. Make weapons powerful enough for one man to murder twenty people and injure a hundred others and B. Not pass laws limiting these things. They wanted every man to have his own musket, his own pistol, his own weapons of self-defense that he can brandish at an oncoming mob and say “Which one of you wants it?” while being fully aware that he’s only going to take down one of them, and hope that the mob thinks the same and says “Well I don’t want it to be me or my buddy, so let’s just go home”. That’s what they wanted. Not this. Never this.

The Bill of Rights was established so that people didn’t have to be afraid of assembly. It was established so that they could trust their fellow man. People needed to be sure that what they read in the paper was correct and honest, and that they should not be afraid of soldiers or policemen intimidating them. That’s what the Bill of Rights is supposed to do.

And constantly, time and time again, people have used it to justify the terror and horror that is perpetuated by American citizens. 

I’m sick of it. And don’t come at me for “politicizing” this, because this is already a political issue. It’s been a political issue. Every massacre that follows these debates is simply another reminder that we still haven’t fixed the problem.

The sad thing is that the next failure, statistically speaking, will probably be within the next two weeks. Someone else is going to die…and we know our leaders aren’t going to do anything about it.

When I saw that the death toll in Las Vegas was over 50, my first thought was, “Is that big for one of these shootings?” So I looked it up, and it is the biggest in modern American history. But I shouldn’t have any concept of ‘one of these shootings.’ Mass shootings should not be so normalized to me that I have so many others to compare it to in memory, the way one would think, 'Is that big for a Ferris wheel?’

I was barely 7 when the Columbine shooting happened, and I learned about it in church. I was horrified but, in the way that small kids do, I accepted that this must be something that happens sometimes and moved on. Two years later, at age 9, I learned after a very strange day at school that terrorists had crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. My first reaction was, “I hope nobody in the plane got hurt.” I had never heard the word 'terrorist’ before.

Barely a year later, we were kept indoors instead of playing outside or trick-or-treating because a sniper was driving around the DC metropolitan area and shooting people. I was quickly realizing that murder was just part of the backdrop of my life, never directly affecting me, but there all the same. Virginia Tech, Fort Hood, Tuscon, the Oslo murders… I started to confuse them in my memory, and so did my friends.

I saw it happening to the next generation, too. James Holmes attacked a movie theatre showing the newest Batman movie while I worked at summer day camp for elementary children. It was horrifying, sobering, but nothing I hadn’t heard of before. I almost didn’t realize how upset I SHOULD be until my little campers came in crying, scared of being shot, drawing disturbing art to deal with their fears, coming to me with questions about what we would do if a gunman came in to summer camp. “You’ll be fine,” I told them without even thinking. “This camp is in a school. We’d have a lockdown like we practiced and we’d make sure you all stay safe. If anyone tried to hurt you, I’d get in front of you. You have nothing to worry about.”

A few months later, I heard the news of the Sandy Hook shooting at an elementary school. I imagined the scared faces of my summer campers, imagined myself in the shoes of the classroom teachers, really pictured myself putting myself between the shooter and the kids, and hated myself for being so dismissive of the threat of a shooting.

But so many mass killings have happened since then– the Boston Marathon bombings the day before my birthday, the Navy Yard shootings down the road from a preschool where I’d once worked, Charleston, Colorado Springs, San Bernardino, Pulse (while I had friends living and vacationing in the neighborhood), all of these intervening years peppered with stories about bombings and terrorist attacks and shootings in other countries and cities… mass killing have become something that occurs so regularly that posting a message of concern and horror on facebook feels like a rote responsibility like commemorating the birthday of a friend every year– muscle memory takes over and the statuses type themselves.

Growing up in the age of internet and 24-hour news, hearing about mass killings is just part of my life as a millennial. But 50 lives being taken, over 200 people injured should never be normal.

another point i want to make–

i’m not a big langst fan, because i feel like a lot of it relies on vilifying the other members of the cast for the sake of making lance look less appreciated/loved. i know people have fun with it in fanfics, and all the more power to them (i mean this sincerely; i know there’s a push-back against langst, but i have nothing against it as long as it doesn’t seep into canon analysis), because fanfic is a free-for-all-playground, but it’s not my thing. 

in terms of canon… 

while we as an audience know that lance is super insecure, not everyone else does. you can say that pidge is mean for labeling lance as a “goofball”, since he internalizes this and starts to genuinely believe it–or you can realize that she meant it all in good fun and had zero intent to seriously hurt his feelings. assigning malice to her casual, playful insult isn’t really fair to her. she cares about lance a lot. remember when she completely changed her tune about leaving in season 1 because lance was hurt? remember when she screamed for lance in season 2 after he got hit at beta traz? remember that she specifically thought back to lance trying to befriend her at the garrison when saying that she wanted to be closer to her teammates? 

the team likes lance as a person. they enjoy having him around. he’s their friend. it’s why they mess with him like this. do any of them look like they’re making fun of him because they dislike him? no. 

hell, keith sincerely tried to cheer lance up by joking about him being bad at math! and it kind of worked! 

now, does lance interpret a lot of this in the worst possible way because he’s insecure? absolutely. does this mean everyone else is to blame for how he feels? no. they simply don’t understand the extent of his issues. they’re fighting a war, as lance himself reminded keith; they don’t have the mental energy to devote to fussing over lance’s feelings all the time.

it’s complicated because you can’t blame lance for being insecure either; it’s all just a series of misunderstandings, really. if lance were to run off because he thinks he’s the unnecessary seventh wheel, i imagine they’d all be shocked and really upset. 

but blue?

blue has no such excuse. blue understands the situation perfectly. she knows exactly what lance is feeling. if anyone in the universe would know that lance is insecure, it would be blue. she can send ideas directly into his mind without any effort, and yet she chose to remain completely silent and shut him out instead. no explanation, no reassurance, no goodbye, nothing. she basically just slammed the door in his face and let him figure the rest out. 

she knows exactly what kind of assumptions lance would make after being shut out. she knows that he feels like a seventh wheel even when he does have her support. she knows that he hinges his identity on her (”mrs. blue lion”). she knows that he’s very possessive of her (’we’re very happy together! very happy!”). she knows that he calls himself lancey-lance. hell, she can probably name every single member of lance’s family. 

it’s no coincidence that blue finally responded to allura when she expressed self-doubt. that’s something that blue recognizes quite well since lance doubts himself so much.

it’s one thing for someone to be clueless about how lance feels and say something that accidentally upsets him–keith in particular, since he’s a “loner”–and it’s another entirely to be 100% aware and let him suffer anyway. she’s supposed to be his lion, his old girl, his best girl, but she left him out in the cold in such a pointlessly cruel (and dangerous, honestly, considering how much it delayed lance entering the battle) way. 

this right here is canon langst, from the last source i would have thought of. 

we’d better get a damn good explanation for her behavior in season 4.

Is it like a possibility that Lotor might be half Galran half Altean??? I’ve seen some people make posts saying he looks more Altean than Galran and at first I was like, “he’s Zarkon’s son, he’s Galran that’s just how it is. But he does lowkey look Altean” But now looking at his squad in the trailer for season 3 that dropped yesterday, people were saying that the women on his squad were all only half Galran, or only looked half. So would it be possible that Lotor put together a squad of half Galran badasses because he wanted to surround himself with people like him??? Cause then his Altean like appearance would make sense???

Rant about negative elderly folk

I'm just gonna go on a rant here cause when I read things or see stuff about how people love old people and just have this genuine positive view of elderly people, I wish with all my heart to have that same view but the elderly person I know the most is my grandma on my mom's side who is by far the most negative person I've ever met and through my 16 years thus far it's even affected my view of myself and her comments could be the source of my self hate for weeks on end like just today we're at dinner at Red Lobster for my little brother's birthday and my mom amd grandma don't like seafood, but my lil bro and I do. So we're in the restraunt and she's complaining about how the crab legs are messy and this definately wouldn't be her choice of restraunt. Then a little while in this heavier woman walks by our table to the other side of the room and I notice her comment on the woman to my mom and my mom says that she's seen heavier people and I try to throw in my two cents about how the woman could suffer from diabetes and it might not be excessive eating and I didn't say it but hell even if it was excessive eating it doesn't affect my grandma in the slightest so the comment was completely uncalled for in the first place. Then at another point she commented on how I was eating my crab pasta and how it was messy and not ladylike and that she hoped I wasn't going on any dates eating like that. And this is something that has gotten to me for years now and to this day I've been insecure and overly conscious about and that's how I eat and making sure that it isn't too messy because God forbid a female ever eats a but messily because then she'll never get a boyfriend unless she learns how to twirl her spaghetti with a fork AND a spoon and because I've heard this same comment for years growing up now I'm so conscious when I eat spaghetti in front of ANYONE and like I'm always hiding my face or choose to eat it in my room cause I don't wanna look like a pig and that's not even the half of it. Just so much of what she says is so negative and it's hurt me so much through the years and like she spoils me yeah cause she's my grandma but I've just lost so much respect for her cause she's so fucking negative. I've always wished I could meet elderly people that can give me positive insight and wisdom without cutting it into me with their words and idk I've never had that and it really sucks. Like we already have so much negativity in the world but she doesn't care cause everyone has to hear her opinion regardless if it just makes everyone uncomfortable from the uncalled for rudeness. Anyways sorry for the long ass rant. I just had to say something cause I could never say it to her face without her lecturing me for hours on end with more negative bullshit.
