one profession that does need better gatekeeping is people who write or translate subtitles. brother that is not what was said.
#they're going for the fastest + cheapest they can get because the people making the choice care about money not quality#simul-dubs are even worse because the translators get burned out quickly and don't have time to re-check or even edit#translation is a skill and an art but companies don't want to actually pay for it because 'it's just copying what was said'#also translators end up between a rock and a hard place#if they translate literally it can be jarring or make no sense#if they adjust for culture/tone/character/etc they get accused of censoring#either way they risk getting harassed (or worse) for pennies and their employment is at risk#also i've seen (non-commercial) translation jobs and looked into them and the pay is hilariously bad#but also something companies will hire anyone off the street for if they loosely qualify#because the turnover is so high they need the constant source of new bodies#and they pay horribly so people you'd want doing translations work for someone else or go into a different career that pays a living wage#and now companies are choosing to save even more money by using glorified google translate instead of people#but as much as i roll my eyes at “[speaking foreign language]” the problem isn't with translators#it's companies cheaping out and prioritizes exec bonuses because proper translating costs money and takes time#(plus involves pesky little things like labour laws)#and it's the company that approved those subtitles to begin with because they don't care about quality or accuracy or the viewing experienc#pretty sure many wouldn't even bother with subtitles at all if it wasn't legally required for them to include them

I mean you might accuse me of indulging my mace fetish but I do think that giving police clubs is better than high tech equivalents, like it's terrible optics to see police bashing the shit out of people but that's a good thing, you want it to look bad on camera, not some clinical electrostim gadget that they use as a routine torture device.
at least if the police have clubs they have to break a sweat chasing you, they can't take your eye out from a block away like rubber bullets can.

As protests start ramping up and violence escalates please remember:
DO NOT PUT MILK IN YOUR EYES FOR PEPPER SPRAY OR TEAR GAS.
It can and will cause infection due to bacteria. Flush with water, distilled if possible, and never EVER wear contact lenses to protests where there may be police retaliation.
Please reblog. It may save someone's sight.

I rly hate the Satanic Panic & the moral panic surrounding violence in video games in the 90s, coz it's now impossible to talk about the social implications of violent video games in a realistic sense.
No, violence in video games does not create serial killers in the way most people imagine it would.
However, it's very important to notice how after 9/11, a lot of violent video games pivoted their content from silly gratuitous cartoon gore to more realistic military shooters set in the Levant from a US American lens. It's also important to notice the connection of these games & their toxic online multi-player voice chats to Gamer Gate in 2014.
It's obviously not as black & white as it was presented in the 80s & 90s, I dont think everyone who played early Call of Duty games is a white supremacist who wants to join the military to kill people in the middle east, but I think it's dangerous to pretend like video games or any media can't have an impact on the way people think about violence.
I think what makes all the difference here is how that violence is portrayed, what the message behind it is, what the motives are behind the people who crafted that message, who the victims of that violence are, how they are portrayed & the greater cultural context that surrounds it.

I hate hate hate hate how dog friendly everything is in the city now. Barring medical necessity, there is no reason to bring your dog to a restaurant, there is no reason to bring your dog to the grocery store, there is no reason to bring your dog to the nail salon. Dogs do not need to go everywhere you go why am I being forced to be around dogs all the time
