Pyre is my brain baby, at the least. I had her designed from description for me, though the artist who drew up her first reference really out-did themselves with following what I wanted. I adore her so much.

Many people question why I’m sometimes styling myself in a feminine way when I’m a trans dude. Many people also take this as an opportunity to misgender me and insist that I’m “fake trans” or “at most genderfluid”. I never understood why they would say such things, but unfortunately I let it affect me.

It took me some time to gain my confidence again. And now I couldn’t care less what people think of me and my interests.

I love makeup and styling. I wouldn’t call myself a pro at either, but it’s something I love doing. And for me, styling myself like this feels sort of like cosplaying. I’m pretty much dressing up and styling myself a character that I am myself not. I just love the transformation, and to take photos of it. And frankly there’s nothing wrong with that.

Because truly there is no such thing as gendered interests, clothes or makeup. No matter what people may think, there is nothing wrong with doing what makes you happy.

I’ve known and heard of quite many cis men throughout my life that have been praised when they’ve used makeup. When they’ve styled themselves and done something considered feminine. They’ve been told they’re brave for going against gender roles. And I don’t disagree at all, quite the opposite.

But if we’re going to praise cis men for doing something feminine, then we need to give trans men the same support. 

Because telling me that I’m “simply confused” isn’t true. Instead it’s extremely hurtful. Especially since I don’t do the styling on a daily basis. Especially since I, in my everyday life, try to “pass” as much as possible before I am able to transition.

So next time you want to question a persons gender identity and call them fake, do everyone a favor and don’t. Because frankly, they know their gender identity better than you do.
