Glimpses of Cancer & its Management by Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, Cancers are called as “Arbuda” & it is described that, Cancer is a low grade, inflammatory disease; which increases very slowly. Further, it is also mentioned that, unlike other inflammatory swellings, Arbuda ( Cancer) does not ripen and swelling of Cancer is very stiff and hard on palpation.
· The treatment protocol of cancer in Ayurveda is,
1. Debulking - first step is to reduce the swelling either by oral medications, Panchakarma & or coupled with certain local application of herbal paste on visible swelling. This reduces the hardness and size of the swelling, which is followed by next step of Surgery.
2. Surgery – If patient is not contra indicated for surgery, then the best way to get rid of cancer is, to perform Surgery, by an expert Surgeon, who knows all about the anatomy of the body, & about the “Marma” ( certain very vital parts of the body, damage to which can be fatal), disease and has undergone full training of surgery. The next step is-
3. Agnikarma – (Ancient radiotherapy) -local cauterization- so that remnants of cancerous cells are also burnt and prevents its spread & relapse. Finally to give Rasayana treatment.
4. Rasayana - Rejuvenating medicines to improve the immunity and strength of the body.
How Ayurveda can be integrated with today’s conventional treatment of cancer. –
Ø Ayurveda emphasizes a lot on the detoxification procedures, called Panchakarma. These are five processes like- induced vomiting, purgation, medicated enemas, bloodletting & nasal instillation of medicines. It is said that through these detoxification processes, all causative humors and toxins can be expelled from the body’s various system. Following panchakarma, body’s tissues / system become more perceptive & respond quickly to the medicines. Then finally, in order to render permanent immunity & for healthy longevity, Rasayan (Immunomodulators) herbs or herbal combinations are given in various forms like Decoction, medicated Ghee etc., So that, the disease is treated in totality with less or no chances of recurrence or relapse.
Ø Now, those who cannot undergo vigorous process of Panchakarma or those who are contradicted as per Ayurveda for panchakarma, for them next best option mentioned is “Controlled Fasting & or Calorie restricted diet”; Eventually as per the articles published in various authentic journals from USA & UK like, Frontiers in Oncology, JAMA, BMJ etc, based on the number of clinical trials, it has proven positive effects of short term fasting, calorie restricted diet & Ketogenic (High fat) diet in the management of cancer, without abrogating the effects of chemotherapy. Thus, the outcome of this modern research corroborates Ayurveda’s Principle of fasting & Medicated Ghee (High Fat diet).
Ø Last but not the least, as we all know, today’s best of the chemotherapeutic drugs are indeed derived from the herbs. Now it is a time to evaluate & use Herbal Immunomodulators judiciously in the management of cancer as chemo preventive drugs.
Ø Herbs have pleotrophic effects means it can target multiple pathways and receptors to block the growth of cancer cells and at the same time it also improves an Immunity of a person.
Ø It has been observed that, those who have taken integrated treatment of Modern science along with traditional Ayurveda treatment under the supervision, they have better outcome than others in terms of relapse, recurrence, rate of metastasis and in improving quality of life.
Ø Herbs like, Ashwagandha, Turmeric, Giloy, Moringo, Trigonella, Black raisins have been found very effective when used as an adjuvant to chemotherapy. They reduce chances of relapse or recurrence and prevent the spread ( metastasis) of the disease when started in early stages.
Conclusion-
Considering the increase in the number of cancer cases due to early detection, it would be definitely prudent to incorporate Ayurveda’s dietary principles along with herbal Immunomodulators as a future roadmap so that person can have a disease free, healthy longevity.

Ancient Massage Techniques – India
“Disease don’t go near the one who massages his feet before going to bed, just as snakes do not go near the eagles”—Ancient Indian Scripture.
I think ‘massage’ must have been the first and foremost medical treatment known to human beings, when no other medicines were known.
Massage was in practice to sooth sore muscles, joints and headaches for thousands of years in most part of the world –mostly as a quick, safe and healthy way of relieving everyday’s fatigue. Over the years it is expediting towards scientific approach.
Today we know that a massage done according to natural laws of human anatomy, energy flows and movements – offers excellent health benefits. It vibrates and energizes skin, muscles and joints that help to relax and lighten the body .It makes you glow with radiance of skin.
The strokes and pressure variation of technically designed massage procedure helps in drainage of lymph ,increases circulation of blood and lymph in organs and skin. Heat generated through massage soothes deep tissues and relieves from deep muscle strains and stiffness .Increased blood circulation increases blood nutrient supply to damaged tissues and muscles-especially useful for athletes, sportsmen and exercise lovers.
There are many types of massage techniques developed in different countries-mainly India, China, Thailand, Turkey, Russia and Roman Empire. Each one use their unique method with choice of oil, soft foam, plant leaves, muss, dry powders etc.
In a series of articles, we will discuss the different types of massages developed by Ayurveda for the therapeutic purpose as well as for beauty purpose.A history of more than 2500 years of research into the development of these unique methods have a scientific evidence of results they produce.
Classification of massages can be done by following ways:
Based on body parts
1.Full body massage
2.Head massage
Foot &/ or palm massage
4.Spinal massage
5.Joints massage
6.Marma(vital points)massage
7.Lympatic massage
Based on materials used:
1.Oil massage
2.Dry powder
3.Crushed Herb
4.Leaves of medicinal plants
5.Hot poultice
5.Soft foam of salts
6.Mud
Based on movements:
Tapping
Kneading
Rubbing
Squeezing
Gentle pressure
Among all, Ayurveda has a well-developed system of massage treatments that most of the Ayurvedic center and ayurveda tourism recommends and even practice as usual procedure of initiating any treatment. Panchakarma- a healthy and commended procedure of Ayurveda treatment includes medicated oils or powdered or hot poultice massages.
How important is the massage for our body?
Ancient Indian Hindus studied human health and its diseases in depth. They observed that a dullness in circulation of blood or lack of energy in body leads to some kind of disease.Massage works well on these three systems of our body – Blood/Lymph Circulatory system, Nervous system and Musculoskeletal system. We will first look at the full body massage and its effects on Circulatory system in this part.
Massage for Circulatory system-Lymphatic System
We know that fluid called “Lymph“is a fluid that flows between tissues, and is major carrier of nutrients as well as toxins. The slow movement of it causes delay in supply of important nutrients to tissues and thus unwanted toxins tend to build up between the tissues .Massage and regular exercise are the ways to regulate the proper flow of blood and lymph.
What is lymph and its importance?
Lymph is found everywhere in our body between the cells, except in some places like bone marrow, central nervous system, spleen and cartilages. There is a fine network of lymphatic vessels in our body just like the blood vessels network. All lymph in the body flows through tiny vessels with valves towards the chest that ultimately mixes with blood. On the lymphatic route we have lymph nodes on various parts which can be felt under the skin.
This lymphatic system plays vital role in our body’s defense against diseases. Enlarged lymph nodes are indicative of underlying abnormal conditions. Lymph plays primitive role in nutritive function and drainage of toxins as well.
How massage helps our body and lymph circulation?
-Massage increases temperature in the area, which induces to formation of lymph.
-Massage increases the movement of lymph towards chest by way of muscular action.
-Mostly the pressure points on palms, foot, abdomen, legs and arm correspond to the lymphatic plexus and lymph nodes.
-Gentle vibrations created by strokes of hands by the masseur increases lymph flow which in turn reduces blood pressure.
-Regular massage of abdomen relaxes the system and helps to improve digestion, passage of accumulated gases by stimulating lymph flow of intestinal lymph nodes.
Who should get this massage and how long should be the duration?
Infants upto 3 years-for 15 minutes
Healthy young person-Age between 5-18 years-for 30 to 45 minutes
Healthy adult-Age 18 -40 years-for 40-45 minutes
Healthy adult –Age 40-60-As per the state of health/requirements
Older person –As per state of health requirements.
As a rule, the pressure and area in older person and child below 3 years should be considered carefully by masseur. Focus should be given to problem areas.
Who should not get the massage?
Those having cough related conditions, fever, vomiting, constipation, chronic indigestion and who are under treatment for active disease should not take massage.
Benefits of regular massage-
-Increases virility, vitality and rejuvenation
-Relief from fatigue
– Regulates the “Vata” component of body constitution
-Vision improvement of eyes
– Strengthens muscles
– Longevity
-induces sleep
– Improves skin texture and glow
– Improves immunity against diseases
– Improves recovery from injuries
– Improves overall resistant to effects of pollutants and allergies
In subsequent articles we will discuss more about how ideal massage works and “Marma” massage.

Is Super bug stronger than our Immunity?
An alarming and biggest threat has already spread its net in medical industry. Doctors are already worried about preventing it; even the new technology and antibiotics are also failing in front of this peril.
Super bugs- Yes!! These are antibiotic resistant bacteria which are fast becoming a reality and also a growing terror to human’s subsistence. Due to its resistance against antibiotics; it is helping old infections to resurface in human body. These further lead to incurable chronic diseases which can be fatal as well.
Medical industry is recklessly spending enormous amount of money to discover new antibiotics that could stop the invasion of Super bug on human body. Within one century we have come to a point, where bacteria are growing stronger than our resistance.
Although years back, we were blessed with antibiotics that would prevent us from these harmful bacteria but as time passing by these germs are growing stronger than medics. We are running out of new antibiotics which can kill these fast evolving germs.
On the other hand, there are series of viruses that are empowering vaccines. Adding to it, there is also lack of knowledge about the usage of medics. For eg: Cold and flu is viral disease, but people take antibiotics to suppress these infections. With basic self-knowledge, many people take medications without consulting any doctor. Medical industry is turning a quest in terms of saving lives from these bugs and diseases.
So, is our health in stake of some wonder to happen by Nature? Thankfully, No! The very same nature has created human with an amazing in-built power; which we have named it as “Immunity”. Our immunity is naturally stronger than we anticipate; it has power to fight and pull out even the toughest bacteria, virus and bugs. To strengthen our immunity to resist these bugs, it is also important for us to maintain and take care of the immunity.
Following below measures help immunity to stay healthy and tenacious on very long run.
Eating healthy diet.
Minimal consumption of salt and sugar.
Consuming organic or rather avoiding chemicals in any form
Living in clean and hygienic surrounding
Encouraging good personal/social habits
Drink pure water
Refrain from addictions
Adequate Sleep
Daily exercise and physical activity
Abstaining from modern life hazards like radiation from any source.

Ramil’s story… about Ayurveda, Medical, Wellness and Healthcare tourism
Ramil came to us with multiple health conditions — at the age of 40 he suffered from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, sexual dysfunction, IBS, and tension headaches.
He worked as a senior sales manager with a family of four to support. He was a smoker as well as an alcohol lover. His doctor attributed all his health problems and kept him on various chemical pills to ’control’ his problems. Unfortunately, medications only succeeded in keeping his condition under control but did not eliminate. Ramil could not afford to skip a single dose for the fear of worsening his situation. Finally, he came to us for an advice on “Wellness & Lifestyle” to change his disappointing situation.
This is just one case, there are many. Today almost 50% of cases any doctor sees are of Lifestyle related diseases (precisely from past 25 years) and remaining are of acute nature like inflammation or infections. Patients as young as 20 years may have some or the other lifestyle disease.
Like Ramil, there are many who want to change their lifestyle – but it’s easier said than done. Where do they start from? diet? exercise? meditation? veggies? nutritional supplements?
People are confused due to these options. They know they must control calories and curb meat intake. But how? Because many of us have never known any other form of food — all we know is some form of meat product from the shelf. It may be sausages, kalbasa, meat patties, meat balls, steak, fish fingers, tinned fish, chicken tikka or pork along with some carbohydrates like jacket potatoes, noodles, pasta, rice or bread. If it isn’t meat, then how do we live? Where do we get our proteins & energy?
And how do we exercise when our full day is busy? Either commuting to work or at work & how are we supposed to meditate — oh God!
It’s a very difficult situation. At least to begin with…till you know how to manage it… only when you know how to get rid of toxins accumulated in your body, staying away from meat or cutting down on calories without losing proteins & energy; your body starts enjoying fruits of big lifestyle changes.
Mostly all our patients or clients choose to go on a Wellness tourism destination also referred to healthcare tourism, to begin with. Wellness Tourism destinations in our list of Ayurvedic centres are an ideal place to start with the solutions that look impossible to you. Wellness tourism reflects medical tourism and Ayurvedic tourism options where multiple options are available to the seekers. Depending on the health analysis, the right treatment is suggested from the best of our wellness tourism options.
Once you reach us with all your problems we find a solution for you that helps you to change your life smoothly — be it big change in diet by consuming healthy food, performing yoga, indulging in meditation or choosing vegan food.
Take a #Wellness tour and experience for yourself.

Let’s get aware with Detox fact sheet!!
Humans are one of an inimitable creation in universe. Every morning while we get ready for our daily chores, we fundamentally never tried to find what exactly is happening within our body’s constitution. How much unnecessary fats are cushioning our tissues, how many junk toxins are deteriorating our digestive system and how many acid refluxes are generating burps?Pause folks and realise! It’s high time where you need to check your physique and extract the unhealthy out. Just as a continuous working engine needs maintenance by oiling, similarly our body and mind need restoration beyond our daily aliment. It is important for a body to be detoxified ones in a while.Benefits of detoxification:1. Eliminate toxins and keep healthy: Health experts say that toxic load (the amount of toxins our body is able to handle) is responsible for many diseases in modern day society. Consuming organic produce (fruits and vegetables), along with other organic nutriment can decreases the amount of toxins and prevents bad health in a vulnerable stage of old age. 2. Enhance energy everyday: After few days of detoxification many people experience improved and more sustained energy during and after a detox diet. A good detox should indulge in adequate intake of hydration with clean water. 3. Delays aging and keeps lively: Aging, which is an irreversible process can be regularized or delayed with regular detoxification. It boosts antioxidants which reduces the toxin level in the body. This further saves enhances good microbes in body and delays aging. However, detoxing body alone doesn’t aid much, it is also important to detox mind and soul too. Yoga is the only exercise that works well to detox mind as well as calm the physical fatigue. Ayurveda describes, mind has separate existence and it needs detoxification too. These can be done with practice of certain Yoga poses primarily Pranayamas (Breathing techniques), Mudras and Bandhas. These Yoga techniques help in developing right vibrations that further flows the energy through the embodiment of an individual. Another powerful detoxification technique of nasal irrigation (Jala Neti), enema (Basti), and the Stomach wash (Kunjal) are some of the most effectual ways to prevent disease and ageing. It is a peak time when man realizes the wonders behind his own body. In the midst of competition and advancing life, we forget that we are becoming the victim of this socio-environmental stress and unintentionally subside the importance of health and age. One should prepare their body to resist these stresses and regenerate life to live longer at an advanced age.
“Detoxing the body to find inner harmony. Dispense with moderation food to the body and to the mind repose.”- Osho Times

Why is Ayurveda Tourism Gaining Popularity?
For most of the world, Ayurveda is synonymous with Yoga – the popular Indian way of exercising the body and mental balance. But the fact is ‘Yoga’ is a part of vast science of health that is Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is ingrained in most Indian homes; we grow up with this system, mostly unaware of its roots. Most of us in our 40s and above have witnessed quick home remedies for common conditions like indigestion, cough, headaches, fevers, acidity, etc. Our treating physician would not prescribe antibiotics every now and then.
But as the pharmaceutical industry began their marketing tactics, the scenario of wellness and medical treatment have changed. Our family physicians started the indiscriminate use of the latest antibiotics (even in viral conditions) and the use of artificially coloured and flavored vitamins; and every time the length of 'prescription' elongated as did the time of recovery.
In the past twenty odd years, thanks to the worldwide web, a lot of awareness about health issues has been generated. Good parents and intelligent people have seen the rise of drug resistant strains of microbes and each time a different antibiotic is prescribed. This triggered a thought process: if microbes are evolving to fight with chemical drugs, why can’t our immune system evolve to fight to save us.
And suddenly there were articles and discussions on the internet that supported natural ways to regain and remain healthy. Thus, the 5000-year old science of health, practiced till date in India with pure natural herbal & mineral medicines, caught the world’s eye. Ayurveda was always rooted in India and in its subcontinents, so it was not difficult for patients around the world to come India in search of Yoga & Ayurveda. Patients would dearly enjoy the natural beauty of this country and also make themselves available to stay at a location as long as advised by the physician to detoxify, rejuvenate and correct their lifestyle.
Many testimonials have circulated on social media and have put firm faith in Ayurveda and other alternative treatments leading to the growth of Ayurveda Tourism concept.
With successful treatments for heart diseases, joint problems, obesity, diabetes, trigeminal neuralgia, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, allergies, migraines, pancreatic & liver conditions, chronic gastrointestinal conditions, insomnia and many more, Ayurveda Tourism today is a boon to many patients around the world without undergoing knife or burning a hole in their pockets.
