Oddly enough, I recently rewatched the Star Wars prequels and one thing that stood out to me was that Lucas’s editing of them is mediocre at best. Scenes ended with random extraneous awkward shots of characters, action sequences were padded out in ways that fuck up the pacing and energy of a scene (the bit with the little droids landing on Obi-Wan’s starfighter at the beginning of RotS is a good example of this), the script has lots of little random awkward dialogue that don’t really contribute anything….these are not nice, tight, well-paced movies.

I remember back in the early 00’s when The Phantom Menace came out on DVD, one of my friends pointed out that it actually flows better if you just skip the pod race entirely. And he had a point; the entire plot of the movie comes to a screeching halt for most of the middle act of the film so that it can set up and show an extended racing sequence that has very little to do with the story being told up to that point. But George Lucas had absolute control by this period of his career, and he loved his auto racing, so he was going to shoehorn in his racing scene come hell or high water.

okay but if you ever see a male creative who had a string of great work and then everything else he did was dogshit, go to the "personal life" part of his wikipedia and look at his relationships. you'll either find a major tragedy he didn't recover from (completely understandable) or, more likely, there was a woman in his life doing uncredited shit editing his stuff or contributing generally and she's not there anymore.

I told a friend about this phenomenon in literature and he called me weeks later like, I remembered what you said about women doing uncredited work when tim burton came up. he made a string of bangers then everything else just was nowhere near as good. the timeline matches perfectly to when he was with this german visual artist (lena gieseke). he's done some good work in collaboration, but if things were dug into I suspect we would find she did a lot more than people realise.

so yeah whenever you look around like wow women didn't work in history, or, women aren't auteurs, or, there just aren't as many great female writers - societal reasons for that aside, half the time they absolutely did.

Subtle foreshadowing you may have missed in Star Trek VI:

Minnesota Representative, Hortman and her husband were killed in what is believed to be a targeted act of political violence last night and Senator Hoffman and his wife weren shot multiple times by a man impersonating law enforcement. As of this time Hoffman and his wife are out of surgery and alive.

If you’re local to these affected areas and someone claiming to be police come to your door, it is advisable to dial 911 and confirm with dispatch that they are legitimate officers and not the impersonator.

I don’t know if it’s still happening but Brooklyn police were reported to be moving in pairs to avoid being confused for the impersonator who is as far as we are aware, alone.

Please, please, please if you are going to the protests across Minnesota today, be extra careful of anyone in uniform. Cops are already not our friends, but this is an added layer of unpredictable violence.
