week four:  design related
Based on David McDiarmid's publication 'Toxic Queen', I created this A5 design. I drew from the use of heavy text imagery and colour found in McDiarmid's piece, creating a snapshot of these elements. I used a page from the newspaper for the background, selecting a section that had large amounts of text. I then cut the word 'heart' out of paper and painted this a fluorescent orange. I really like having the text cut out from the paper, creating a stamp-like effect. I would love to explore that within a publication, having words somewhat bleed across pages due to being cut.

week four:  design related
I was scrolling back through my cameraroll and discovered another work from the NGV's Queer exhibition that I found heavily inspiring. This is another work by David McDiarmid titled 'Toxic Queen' (1994). The work is a spiral-bound book that appears to be risograph printed however the printing method was not listed. This particular spread is an obitituary for DJ Larry Levan who died in 1992. I really enjoyed McDiarmid's use of the page within this design. I feel as though there is a perfect balance of content and negative space, creating a really interesting design. The more you look at the piece, the more information you can find. I also really love the use of colour and imagery.
From this piece, I would love to create a collage that utilises similar colours and in particular text.

week four:  unrelated/left of field to design
For this experimentation, I began by creating a simplistic collage design that I thought would be interesting when folded. I wanted to steer away from folding styles I had experimented with before, with myself creating this. I really like the way this fold acts like packaging for the internal design, with the audience being able to unfold the piece to see both the front and back design in full. I did this experiment super quickly but think that it is super considered and intriguing. I would love to try this within the context of page design, hiding more information within folded sections of a page.

week four:  unrelated/left of field to design
This week, I really wanted to explore folding. This inspiration point was definitely random but I just wanted to have unregulated experimentation that centered around a broad theme. I have always loved folding paper but tend to explore more traditional, zine folding styles. This week I was really inspired to just try different and unique folding styles. I wanted to rely on my intuition a bit this week, drawing from my own mind-bank rather than the work of others. From this inspiration point, I really want to sit down and just try folding. I want to create some form of content and really explore how meaning and communication can be enhanced through folding. Ways I could trial this are by: - Getting a piece of paper and creating folds (possibly timed) - Creating a design and seeing what folding style lends to this - Creating different paper shapes and trialing concise folds on these (how can I change shape through folding)

week three:  unrelated/left of field to design
Based upon Nong Rak's pieces, I created a snapshot of the colour schemes used across their pieces. I began by painting paper with watercolours or water-down acrylic paint as I thought this reflected the textures of mohair. The way water-colour paint carries varied tones matches that of mohair, with it having a real soft and organic appearance. I then cut the painted sections into random shapes and played around with pairing new colours together. I used the shapes as a vessel to explore colour and colour combinations as I felt their tactical nature allowed deeper experimentation. This was definitely a loose association back to Nong Rak's pieces but I thought it was a more personalised experimentation.

week three:  unrelated/left of field to design
This week I rediscovered the work of fashion designer Nong Rak. Nong Rak's work predominantly uses the mohair, with their work being an interesting exploration of colour and texture. One feature about their work I am heavily inspired by is their colour palette. There are so many colour variations across their pieces, many of which I would have never considered combining.
In response to this, I would love to explore this colour palette further and work to snapshot these colours within a colour range.

week three: creative field of practice
For this experiment, I went to the op-shop and purchased a square piece of fabric to try my hand at creating a quilt-like design. I wanted to reflect the designs found in Polly Bennett's quilts but add a modern edge. I have always found it interesting to contrast old-style pieces with more 'modern' aspects, with myself using fluorescent colours to achieve this. Against the old-style handkerchief, the bright, geometric shapes add a more expressive language which I enjoy. I used acrylic paint to paint onto the fabric which did make the experimentation quite messy and the fabric quite stiff. I think the humanistic style found within Bennett's quilt designs is lost within this experimentation. This was definitely something very new to me and I would love to recreate this with more precision, varied colour schemes, and a more applicable paint medium.

week three: creative field of practice
Upon tumblr, I discovered the quilt artist Polly Bennett. Bennett's work is both patterned and abstract, with herself creating incredibly visual quilts. Her quilts date back to the 1930s and she was a part of a collective titled Gee's Bend Quilting Collective. I love the works use of colour and pattern to create these really naturalistic yet considered pieces. The shapes are so harsh in their shape however through colour and pattern, become very humanistic. To me, Bennett's work hinges on both harmony and obstruction.
Based upon Bennett's work, I would love to explore: - Layering or creating work with fabric - Layering paper to replicate the patterns in her work - Exploring her colour scheme

week three: creative field of practice
Based upon the work of David Bellingham, I created these quick collages using shape and archival imagery. I opted for black and white photos due to their neutrality and used coloured copier paper for the shapes. I am really happy with how this turned out, especially due to its simplicity. This technique captures that juxtaposing of modern and archival which I like to explore within my works. I think the bright, almost fluorescent colour allows for a different tone to become captured in the images.

week three: creative field of practice
On Instagram, I discovered the work of artist David Bellingham. Bellingham marks archival photographs with various patterned shapes to create unique blends of modern and archival. I have always loved juxtaposing old and new, with Bellingham's artistic technique achieving this expression. I really like the ways in which Bellingham uses shape to contrast and add interest to imagery. However, I don't really love the varied sizes of the shapes as it makes the pattern appear very 80s (and not in the cool, vintage way).
Bellingham has been working from the 2000s to today, creating works that have a common geometric theme. From this inspiration, I could try: - Creating stencils and creating a pattern on an image - Paint on geometric shapes to create a pattern - Cut paper shapes and stick them onto images

week three: design related
This experimentation was inspired by Pengguin's zine. I incorporated the design's use of shape and folding however, added negative space and cut-outs. I think the negative space allows so much more interest to be added to the work, especially when people are holding or moving through it. New things can be added or taken away from the piece depending on the context of the design, adding intrigue and personality. I would love to explore cutting and folding further within the semester, especially through more professional methods.

week three: design related
Again on Instagram, I discovered this zine created by design collective Pengguin. I really liked the zine's use of folding and how content worked in harmony with the form. I really like the shapes used within the zine and would have loved if they were laser-cut from the designs. I know this addition would not be applicable for the double-sided content of this zine but I think it would have been such an interesting idea to explore. I think the ways in which the shapes are formed would have added such an interesting physical aspect.
From this inspiration, I really want to draw from this idea but incorporate negative space. I want to explore form and space to create an interesting design outcome.

week two: design related
Here is the zoomed-out version of my risograph print. This design is supposed to be folded to create an accordion folded zine. The lines that are sitting on the top and bottom of the image are the fold lines used to create consistent folds. Although they are not a part of the design, I do find them interesting as they show how the machine layers the colours. It allows you to see how the risograph printing process allows for the creation of imperfect layering.

week two: design related
This photo is a close-up of my risograph experimentation, I have also attached the zoomed-out version in the next post. I am so happy with this experimentation and really enjoyed the process. I picked up the process for file prep and execution fairly quickly when it was explained due to its similarity to screen-printing. I had this design already put together as I had used it in my screen-printing class for my final assignment. I really love both the colour execution and choices within this design and would love to experiment with them further. After getting to trial and further understanding the machine, I really want to use it more throughout the semester on new designs. I think it would be so effective to use a CMYK colour layering method, blocking and layering colours to create a holistic design.

week two: design related
I have always wanted to explore risograph printing techniques with myself using the inspiration journal as an opportunity to trial it. I always liked risograph printing due to its similarity to screenprinting techniques and outcomes. I really like the way layering is used to create final outcomes and designs. In relation to this inspiration, I am wanting to directly explore risograph using the printer in the maker space.
