Birdie's penchant for Gothic décor, with its dark and opulent aesthetic, was evident in every corner of the house. She blended her love of Gothic styles with his more straightforward, country (or "cowboy," as she dubbed it) flair. They complemented each other perfectly, living in harmony.

They were the bluest he had ever seen, and against her sepia skin, they shone like diamonds. Joel Miller never had crushes, but she could have been the one exception.

Sarah was raised by Joel and her Uncle Tommy for the first four years of her life. She was a happy child who loved music and movies, and her father very much. She rarely cried and Joel always said it was because she’d already experienced the worst pain imaginable in losing her mom. She was wise beyond her years and had a lot of compassion for her local community. She died after stepping on a rusty nail on her 12th birthday.

MELISSA SARAH MILLER Melissa was Joel’s first wife. They married young and Melissa fell pregnant with Sarah by accident after a previously failed pregnancy; the fetus died in utero at around 26 weeks and Melissa was induced. It was 3 years after that that Melissa announced her pregnancy and it was far from the happy occasion it ought to have been. It wasn’t until after the 26 week mark that they started to get excited. During labor, Melissa suffered eclampsia, which caused placental abruption. Sarah was delivered safely but Melissa was losing more blood than they could supply her with and it ultimately lead to her death.

ONE FOR SORROW: Characters Tess "Puck" Anderson Unlike other therapists he had encountered, who seemed mundane and conventional, Tess stood out. She never wore beige, but instead, preferred to dress in black. Some days she would don pencil skirts with a pinstriped shirt, while other times she opted for a three-piece suit with no shirt underneath, expertly carrying off the look. Sometimes she’d wear a short-sleeved shirt with a pair of palazzo pants and braces. Her left arm was adorned with a full sleeve of tattoos, and she wore a striking silver and gold Rolex on the same wrist. Joel had studied some of them on the days she had worn short sleeves, they gave him clues as to who she was outside of the office. Born in Nevada and raised in Louisiana, Birdie Mavis Melancon is the oldest of six children. Birdie's childhood was filled with music as her parents were both musicians. Her father played the guitar while her mother sang, and they often performed at local venues. It was no surprise that Birdie inherited their love for music, and she started singing at a young age. She would often perform for her family and friends, and eventually started performing at school events.

When she turned twenty-one, she decided to pursue a career in music and moved to Texas. It was there that she met Joel, the love of her life. They bonded over their shared love for music, and Joel was instantly drawn to her powerful voice. For the longest time Joel called her Nevada, “My name is Birdie,” she’d correct him, “I know.” he’d drawl, and never right his wrong. Birdie learned to love the nickname.

Despite facing many challenges, Birdie remained determined to make it in the music industry. She worked tirelessly at the record store, constantly honing her craft and performing at local gigs whenever she could.
