i know i've barely been on here this year, and partly that's because of a new full time job--but also, i'm starting to think that there's no healthy way for me to be on social media rn. The infinite scrolling opportunities work too well for my anxiety/obsessive thoughts, and as much as i miss the good parts, if i cant separate out the bad it's not worth it for me right now. Hopefully i can figure out a way to come back eventually, because I really like having a community to talk about books with! But at least for a while, i'm gonna keep deleting the app from my phone unless there's a specific post i need to find.
writing a whole post feels melodramatic to me lol but i wanted people do know i do miss y'all!
#mary emma talks#there's almost a physical response#like i open tumblr or instagram or any other social media you can scroll through and start chewing on the inside of my lips#which is a bad habit i have generally but this is the clearest trigger#it does suck though. i think a lot about the early days of social media for me and how positive it could be

love the progress!! I dont have recs off the top of my head, but if you go through the challenge on storygraph here you can click on specific years to see what other people are reading and get some inspiration

I decided at the start of the year to do this backlog books bingo challenge, and then promptly forgot about it - but I just went through the books I’ve read this year and have realised I’m actually quite close to some bingos!
I’d love to spend the rest of the year actively trying to tick off some more of these boxes, maybe even go for a full bingo card? if anyone has any recommendations for books published in the years I have yet to tick off, I would love to hear them!

just because you can physically read a smaller font doesnt mean you have to. if you have the power to make the font bigger on your computer, or use a magnifying glass, or check out a large print book, you can. test it out, and if it gives your eyes relief, start adding it into your daily life
large print is for everyone, give your eyes a break
#mary emma talks#i dont think this is just a me thing i do feel like many people would benefit from this#dont get me wrong people will comment#i've had multiple coworkers be like 'why is your computer font so big???' when they come to my desk#but i say 'i've got old eyes' and they say valid and we move on#i also have a little magnifying glass that i use for people's ID's that i need to be better about grabbing at the desk#because good lord IDs have tiny print

love seeing this progress!! what's your favorite book been so far?
Backlogbooks Bingo Update #1

2025's first quarter is over so I wanted to post an update! I've ticked off seven prompts for the Bingo Challenge and they were all great reads:
60s: In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
70s: The Shining by Stephen King
80s: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
2005: The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
2012: Wonder by R. J. Palacio
2015: Rush by Emma Scott
2016: The Girl in the Ice by Robert Bryndza
I'm aiming for a blackout but at this place it's doubtful. I should be able to get bingo by next quarter! 📖

help out a curious indie author who often feels like she's throwing marketing spaghetti at the wall!
#seconding word of mouth#which especially includes booksellers at indie bookstores#if you can build a relationship with them (idk how that works honestly)#but like. of the last 10 books i bought 8 were recommended to me by one of my local bookstore employees#but excluding word of mouth covers Absolutely influence me

honestly reading all of my fiction tbr last year has been so freeing when it comes to buying books. like first, it gave me a really good sense of what books i want to buy vs the books i want to check out from the library. and second, i feel no guilt when buying books, because i've only got like, four fiction books that i havent read yet (and i just started one of them!)
idk, i'm really enjoying browsing after my book clubs and taking recommendations from the guy who runs the club (with the bonus of supporting a local bookstore, which means i'm *basically* doing a good deed)
#mary emma talks#every fiction book on my shelf that i havent read has been bought this year#that's wild lol#and i'm confident about my nonfiction tbr#not least because i'm in such a nonfiction mood rn

Hey hey, as a librarian, can I just say don’t pace yourself at the library. I get a lot of customers saying “oh I shouldn’t get too many books out at once” but like you should!!!! Max out your card, take everything we have on a subject you’re interested in, make a book fort in your home. We love that shit! It doesn’t matter if you read them or not; just take them for an adventure and bring them back whenever they’re due!
For public libraries, one of the ways we secure funding year to year is lending. Governments don’t want to fund more books if they’re not being used and the way we measure use is by issues. Regardless of whether you read it or not, whether you have it for a day or a month, if you issue it to your library card, we get the stats! It makes the library look good!
Help your local library; get books out even if you know you can’t read them all!
#checked out like 20 home decorating books recently to scratch the pinterest itch and it was So much fub#*fun

in general i would like the font to be bigger lol
It's not, like, a Problem(tm) for me yet, but I do notice how much less my eyes strain when reading on my ereader with the font size turned up
I would probably check out more of the large print books in my library, but obvs the general demographic for that collection is different so a lot of the books i want to read arent available (though i am gonna make it a habit to at least check, especially with newer books because i feel like there's some more variety rn)

Weekly Bookish Question #431 (March 2nd - March 8th, 2025)
Do you have any opinions on fonts used in books (got any favorites? fonts you hate?), or are you fine with whatever?
#for context a few years ago at my eye doctor appointment i couldnt even read the big letter at the top of the chart without my glasses#so they pulled out ye olde 'how many fingers am i holding up' measurement#lol#and again i have glasses so it's not like i *can't* read ths smaller print#it's more like a feeling of relief when reading larger print than a feeling of strain when reading smaller#replies

February wrap up! Wild to see so much more nonfiction than fiction, but it was a good reading month overall!
I'm also so far keeping up with my goal to keep notes/informal reviews of the books i read, which i'm hoping will eventually translate into more content here lol
