genuinely interesting that even the mithra representatives of the sibyl guard, the mithra who usually are like "man tarutaru are so silly and don't know about war", are like "yeah but when they actually focus you gotta watch out".

FFXI update... ground it out in Crawler's Nest to 41, only dying once to Death Jackets deciding that yes, they would all like to Sound aggro from a million miles away. Worked out that I was playing down a trust the whole time (whoops) and pulled myself together on that one.
Now... next time. The Repeat Login Campaign should be going so I'll replace Matsui-P with Shantotto II, and we start on... rank 3 quests for Windurst. Maybe also a few Rhapsodies quests. Hum hum.

the other part that drove me insane about Eden was (and maybe I just missed something) but the complete refusal of the author to identify where in the world it was set. We know where other Zones are (there's ones identified in South America, North America, at least two in Asia, one in Wales (?)) but it felt like the author was delibarately trying not to place the titual Eden Zone in a real place. We got hints of the kinds of animals living there (coyotes, wolves, lynx, venomous snakes, hummingbirds, red squirrels), and the foliage had oak trees, so I must assume North America, but they really tried hard to not actually name the place?
Very much felt like the author wasn't confident in their biology and covered it up by being as generic as possible as much as the time. But also there was a town called "Naxford" so who knows, man. Maybe this is just a symptom of that old problem of "Americans assuming everyone in the world would know it's set in America because that's where everything happens to them".

Ok I finished Eden. My final verdict is that I think I enjoyed the meta-narrative of reports from people that had been displaced from their homes to establish these Zones, protestors that thought they were hiding something, and the general like... United Nations standin organisation's weird attitude about killing people trying to enter than I did the actual story. Bit depressing when you're kind of hoping a chapter will end so you can get a little snippet of a more interesting story in the chapter bumpers.
Actual story was more of a wilderness survival story with a little bit of horror. More Cujo than creature feature. Thought it was a bit cliche to have the monster called "Lilith". We get it, Christian mythology, etc. Felt all a little half-baked and just fishing for the Netflix adaption.

Reading Eden by Tim Lebbon. Haven't finished it yet but I've never read a book that feels so written by a screenwriter as this. Everything feels like it's being described for the Netflix adaptation.

FFXI update... she is now a certified adventurer, toot toot! Fun little level of warmup. You really feel the "we are finding tasks for this guy arbitrarily" energy from each npc, and I don't mean that in a "the game is self-aware" way, like, there is such a fun "we have to go through little tasks to certify you as an adventurer" way. I'm starting to get used to the interface and how you kind of almost don't need to use a mouse 90% of the time.

I also fucked around and installed the text Balloons mod since I took that screenshot, so now it plays out a lot more like a modern MMO in terms of text display. Much more immersive.
I did some levelling. Hit level 30. Got my mog garden. I now realise that the island sanctuary of FFXIV truly is just Mog Garden 2.0.

Also during levelling there was a little crab following a gigas around. Truly heartwarming stuff. I really needed that crab dead.

I also farmed out a quest item to get the other quest items out of my storage, namely the Yagudo Caulk, and let me tell you buddy, that item sure isn't the best drop rate in the world. Valaineral was an absolute asset for just starting every fight with Blade of Uriel though. Really was a choice to give him a text line every time he uses it though. Ended the farming with my log just nothing but this.

Anyway. I died a bunch while levelling in Oldton Movalpos, which is now cemented as moblin Vietnam in my mind, and I started levelling my subjob. Let's go WAR.
#I am a Windurstian despite being an Elvaan and boy I gotta come up with some lore on that one#because man are the San D'orians kind of. insufferable#FFXI
