BAM Photographer Feature: Matt Nykamp

“I’m from and currently located in Bakersfield, California. When I was living in Wichita, Kansas my friends from Bakersfield, (The Hate Drugs and Jake Tovar / @motvd) were telling me all about how bomb the WeeBeasties were. So I met them at that show, shot for em, and since then I’ve been able to hang with them and shoot for them over the past couple months.”

What drew you to concert photography?

“I’ve always been in love with music. I don’t think I emotionally connect with anything quite like I do with music. From a young age I was always going to concerts and live performances, so when I began working with a camera it only made sense to combine the 2 things I’m most passionate about! As I’ve been shooting in the music scene, I’ve realized that I get so excited by being surrounded by other creative individuals who are in love with what they’re doing and really encourages me to keep doing what I love!”

Who are your influences?

“I have tons! First and foremost, I’ve always looked to the band the Doors and Jim Morrison. Visually, I’ve always been inspired by the work of OWSLA’s Jas Davis (@jas) and recently the work of Gibson Hazard - that dudes video work is on another level.

But overall like previously mentioned, I’m really inspired by any artist who is on fire for what the are creating and what message they are sharing. Especially the likes of @kylepanis and @csragatz”
