ok, I still don’t have a full commission/price sheet down yet, but what if I started small with $5 doodle comms? things like color or no color, bust or full body etc makes no real difference to me. i guess it would mostly be traditional, my computer constantly has something wrong with it and I can only ever get shit done in MS paint.

I’d really like to get another post going about my secondary and most-expanded on storyline, but it suffers from two major problems: too many characters syndrome, and too much lore disorder. I personally suffer from ‘fixating on one character and diverting all of my creativity to them at a given time’ disease. maybe one big post isn’t the best to condense it all down, but I’ll find a way to organize it succinctly I guess.

this post is all about one of my oldest OC’s, Nigel.

i created him all the way back in 2017 and his very first appearance really shows it.

(for comparison, the right one is from 2022)

the lady next to him was also created alongside him, a woman whose name i could never decide but have finally landed on Elisa. the story itself has never been a completely solid thing, but the basics of it were always something like —

“Nigel is a zombified super-soldier and the self appointed bodyguard of Dr. Elisa Fray as they wander a post-apocalyptic wasteland desert in search of Fray’s wife.”

I would try to build up how the apocalypse happened and some backgrounds on the laboratory that created Nigel and employees Elisa, but no dice. And by that time I had already been six years out of the closet, so almost every story I worked on had queer characters and themes. If you couldn’t already tell by the drawing, one of the very first details I made about Nigel and Elisa is that he’s unrequitedly in love with her and she’s a married lesbian. i have a strong forte for comedic irony, I think.

this old zine I made at my city’s art college ‘cartooning basics’ day camp was intended to be a world-building thing for that story at the time and focused on a second, much more antagonistic super-soldier:

you can really tell I was 13 when I wrote all this, and it was my first time using photoshop too! I distinctly remember hating it <3 anyways, I’ve mostly lost track of this storyline in favor of another one and don’t quite have much else to say, aside from an info sheet I rewrote in 2020:

|EXP — 5079 “Nigel”

|• physical features: 7’2. muscular (muscle mass is preserved). pinpoint eyes. exposed brain matter. missing half of right ear (partially deaf). multiple stitches + scars. multiple bandages on head and shoulder. deep-sunken eyes. sharp cheekbones. long, sharp teeth. large torso, small waist. heavy brow (hairless). no reproductive organs. clothing consists of baggy pants, combat boots & text gloves.

|• info: “Nigel” is the reanimated corpse of super-soldier experiment #5079. He does not have any remembrance of the super-soldier’s original identity, although he does retain memory of being an experiment. “Nigel” appears to be a new, entirely separate personality. this is possibly the result of the super-soldier genetic modifications mutating the brain to create an entirely new identity.

| “Nigel” travels with former Ledgerman Genetics Lab scientist Dr. Elisa Fray. He appears to be extremely close to her, and has designated himself as her “bodyguard.” Despite his grotesque* appearance, he is generally polite and friendly. However, he Dan be extremely aggressive, & under stress adopts a commando-like personality (most likely super-soldier genetics). He is also extremely protective of Dr. Fray, & any perceived threats to her are met with hostility.

*fun fact: Nigel was actually designed around the word ‘grotesque’ ! I’m very passionate about diverse character designs, especially when it comes to monsters actually being scary, and I always have been even when my skill set wasn’t able to fully express that! additionally, I don’t think Nigel would be as generally polite or friendly as I wrote back then. he’s a snarky tolerator at best, unless you’re Elisa of course.

I also have a few short lore-building docs about them if you’re interested in reading any more (it’s really nothing at all lmao), but this right here is the sum of it all. thank you again!

drawing is unfortunately still a challenge so I think a lot of my posts for now will just have to be old art I’ve pulled out of my binder but either way i hope it’s enjoyed by someone out there. i mean i certainly like it lol

i also plan to post more of my original characters since i never really have, but i love them all dearly and i have overly extensive lore since i tend to write for them when i can’t draw

i don’t ever make posts like this but i’m in a bit of. i guess it qualifies as financial trouble? and i really don’t know what else to do. before i say anything else, i want to disclaim that I do live at home and this problem is not something that my basic survival hinges on. i don’t want to give the wrong idea or worry anyone unnecessarily.

to keep it short, the job I’ve had for two years cut hours for almost everyone back in like, April or so, because of some building renovations in September. they basically want everyone relocated or otherwise on a fixed schedule over the summer, and in my case my hours have gone from three days a week plus every-other-weekend to one day a week and every other weekend—and even my weekend days are rotated out sometimes—so I’m pretty much never there. after a few months of job searching i recently got a second job that scheduled me Wednesdays through Sundays with tips and biweekly pay, as opposed to my first job where the pay is weekly and tips qualify as “special treatment” that isn’t allowed because retirement home rules I guess.

but you can see how hour cuts and hardly being there would mean my weekly paychecks are pretty small. and unfortunately, in the past few weeks my car has had a LOT of issues. i don’t want to be overly detailed but let’s say, it’s pretty old; my dad bought it from my grandparents years ago and handed it down to me when I got my license this past February. as far as I’ve had it, the problems started in March with a mostly-resolved oil leak and now I’ve had to deal with the engine overheating, a slow water/coolant leak, and something wrong with the battery/oil that I honestly don’t know what it could be. we scheduled it for a mechanic last week before our vacation, took it there Tuesday morning, and picked it up today.

the last update I got from the mechanic pretty much said it was fine and the test drive went well, but just this morning when I tried to drive it back a lot of things went wrong, like scarily wrong in my humble post-meltdown opinion, and it’s now my dad’s consensus that it’s through for good. since it’s old we always expected it to go out someday and for me to save up for another but:

TLDR, I just straight up don’t have a car or means of (1) transportation to my second job because of the distance and my parents’ own schedules conflicting; Ubers and Lyfts from my house are extremely expensive as it is because we’re more ‘rural’ and with a 30-some minute drive back and forth it simply costs money that I don’t have, and (2) saving up for a new car. one thing requires the other, you know how it goes. the first job is closer, more convenient for both my parents and Ubers (they tend to be slightly cheaper around there thankfully) but again, I already work very few hours, and the schedules can’t be flexed to just fit me on if I’m not already there anymore unfortunately. without my second job I’m not making any extra cash outside of the first.

but in the meantime, I’d like to try and open up art commissions as some kind of way to get by. i don’t really have much of a presence online with my art as it is and, frankly, a bad combination of things have contributed to some skill regression with me. I’m not churning out masterpieces, basically. if you need any reference, my art blog is @i-cast-fireball-whiskey and my *new* art instagram is creamsodafiend (after my main account got hacked lol). there’s also a few pieces scattered around this blog under my #calscribbles tag.

i’ll try and get a proper sheet and payment stuff up done at some point but in all honesty i have very little faith in this working. i truly appreciate any interest or boosting, and of course there’s no pressure if you don’t have the money.
