I think a lot about “there’s nothing that mustn’t be lost” from the director commentary. It’s genuinely one of the more impactful sentences on my life. If you tie yourself to one relationship, job, future, etc. no matter what, it will stifle your growth. One day that friend will betray you, that job will fire you, that future will be out of your reach. And if you cling to it, you’ll just remain trapped in your coffin. You have to learn to lose. That’s a theme of rgu that I rarely see in other media. A lot of art treats “losing” as an absolute negative, something to be avoided at all costs. But rgu treats it as an imperative. You can obliterate everything from your life and still find your way back to happiness. In the end, Anthy leaves Ohtori, and with it, everything she’s ever really known. Her family, her peers, her life there. Even if it was all awful to her, it’s still a loss. She will have to figure out who she is without it. But because she’s brave enough to lose, she can truly be free of everything that confines her.
