ARTIST STATEMENT
Over generations, it feels as if the taming and domestication of the environment around us is successful when its foundations are based on materialist values and ideals. When humanity pursues materialist objectives, it dulls its spiritual senses and distorts its perception to one dimension, often at the expense of those around humanity.
In subjugating our minds to the lower and denser qualities of materialism, we limit our exposure to beautiful or mystical encounters we might otherwise experience in a more ethereal and natural universe—not just with the others around us but within ourselves too.
Humanity has unfortunately created a proclamation over the Natural realm; that of a self-bestowed proprietorship of land, water, and air, often without reverence for those who were here before us and who will remain here afterwards.
My art is a meditation of how we can individually or collectively achieve an elevation from one-dimensional thinking to be more considerate of the flora, fauna, and mineral entities around us, in a melancholic, atmospheric display, imagining how the classical masters of landscape art might approach our current world, and one which remains hopeful about the tamed and untamed territories of the Americas.
BACKGROUND:
PBZ is a Mexican, Sephardic artist. Báez has been drawing and painting since childhood, learning the basics from her uncle who is now a world-renowned muralist, Israel Zepeda (Zzpda) and later gained training from a custom, hand-made bicycle builder and marble sculptor.
Báez is mostly influenced by classical masters in her study of lighting techniques and composition. Other areas of creativity include photography, screen printing, Hebrew and Arabic calligraphy, often making symmetrical pieces with a mystical intent but she does not share these openly as they are of highly personal and spiritual value.
Báez also trail runs, is the owner an organic hemp shirt business www.tuliapparel.com and is currently in school for Neuroscience with a concentration in pre-medicine.
