Baja BlastDex No. 72: Noivern
Seeking answers to this riddle of the Baja Blast Gene, I’ve decided to study dragons. Fantastical creatures whose bloodlines go back to ancient times, times long before the invention of Baja Blast. In a mass outbreak of Noivern, I was able to find a perfect specimen to conduct my research with. It appears that within dragons, the Baja Blast Gene presents itself in quite a strong way. Their colours become predominantly that of a vibrant Baja Blast as though to say that their majesty and this gene are directly linked.
I feel very close to unraveling this mystery…

Baja BlastDex No. 54: Shuppet
Meet Leonie! I caught her in Paldea during a Mass Oubtreak!
Tumblr media
Did you know that if you look closely at Shuppet, you can actually see the fibers of the cloth?
It really makes you wonder if the Baja Blast Gene is really present in Shuppet, or if it just chose to wear a different cloth for its body? Perhaps the gene gave it an underlying instinct to choose this cloth? How does a ghost even have a Baja Blast Gene? These are many questions I still seek the answers to…

Baja BlastDex No. 51: Croagunk
She, well… she has a bit of an embarrassing name, but I’ll explain!
Her name is Bobgunk. I know it’s a bit strange but hear me out. Back around the end of 2021, a few of my friends and I decided to revisit the Sinnoh region for nostalgia. During this trip, we got heavily into spelunking all around the region, and one of my friends regaled me about his travels to a place underground that he insisted was called Bobgunk Cave. We would eventually come to find out that what he actually meant was Bogsunk Cavern!
Every now and then, I still tease him about it. During my time travelling adventures in Hisui, I had become quite homesick, missing my present-era friends. So I was thinking rather nostalgically about that moment, when I stumbled upon this unique specimen! Thus, the name Bobgunk was chosen. It felt like the perfect fit to me.
Tumblr media
I’d like to dedicate this next segment to Croagunk’s cheeks! I’ve always been a fan of the way Croagunk’s cheeks puffed up, but did you ever wonder why? Well, after combing through many different Dex entries, I’ve found some rather interesting data! Apparently the parts of Croagunk’s cheeks that puff up are called its poison sacs! It’s a bit of a strange name, as Croagunk doesn’t seem to actually be capable of using the poison stored in its cheeks, opting instead to use the venom in its fingertips to jab unsuspecting opponents.
Side note: did you know the venom stored in its fingertips can actually be squeezed out, and diluted to become a medicinal ingredient? This quality actually lead to a pharmaceutical company choosing to use it as its mascot!
Anyways, so what exactly are its poison sacs used for then? Well, the answer may surprise you, given the name. But it uses them to make what has been described as an “eerie blubbering sound” that intimidates opponents! I guess that would explain why Bobgunk immediately tried to attack me afterwards!
Tumblr media
Finally, I must note that this shiny’s place of origin, or rather… time of origin does leave me once again hypothesizing about just how deep this rabbit hole goes surrounding the Baja Blast Gene…

Baja BlastDex No. 48: A Pile of Limes??
Just kidding!!
It’s Trapinch!!
Though you wouldn’t be wrong if you were mistaken, as this little fella’s name is Limes! I found him during a mass outbreak at Blueberry Academy’s own Terarium on 12/21 2023!

Baja BlastDex No. 40: Teddiursa
Everyone say hello to Minty! I caught him a long time ago, in a land not too far away… that’s right, Hisui! Adjusted for time travel date… I’d say he was caught on February 13, 2022. Don’t ask me how time calculation works, I just plug in the numbers and out pops the answer! Though if you wanted a more detailed explanation… well, I’m sure Dialga could help you out.
Ahem, anyways, that’s neither here nor there. What is interesting however, is that the Baja Gene i’ve been researching somehow even manages to exist in the not-so-distant past. Could this be some grand conspiracy? Could the Galaxy Team be behind all of this? Or perhaps the Baja Gene exists in all of us in the form of imaginal cells, waiting to bind together? Could Baja Blast simply be born from our innate desires that lay so deep underneath our subconscious that we created it without even knowing what it truly means from an evolutionary standpoint??
Much to think about, yes…

i respect the baja blast grind so much!!
Thank you!! I’m so happy to be taking on this project, and while I’ve only been posting ones I’ve already caught so far, I’ve been doing a lot of background hunting to hopefully have some new ones to show off soon!!

Baja BlastDex No. 38: Dewott
I mean come on now, with a name like DEWott, it just had to make the list!
Dewott is a rather unique entry to this list so far, as it’s the only one of its evolutionary line to be included in the Baja BlastDex. However, we’ll see soon enough that many standalone members of their families will be a part of this Dex!
I caught this particular rascal back in Oshawott Community Day 2021. His name is Bushi, and comes from a long lineage of Samurott, going all the way back to Hisui. That may or may not have been caused by me sending back one of his brothers through a time machine in order to see what shiny Hisuian Samurott looked like, hehe 🤭

Baja BlastDex No. 35: Grotle
Another fantastic specimen caught back in 2019 for the Turtwig Community Day in GO!
His name is Fuzz, older brother to Fizz! While Grotle is the capstone of this line for the dex, as Torterra just doesn’t have enough teal to consider it Baja Blast, you’ll be happy to know that these two brothers share a Torterra mom named Algie!

Baja BlastDex No. 27: Glimmora
This pretty girl’s name is Lapis! I caught her back in November of 2022, shortly after I began my journey in Paldea. During my traversal of a cave, I found an outbreak of Glimmet and decided to set up a picnic and do some research! Eventually I stumbled upon her, and she became an incredibly valuable member of my team. She even got to become Champion with me!

Baja BlastDex No. 023: Grimmsnarl
This one is a special Grimmsnarl from an event, and thus doesn’t have an official nickname! But I would love to tale suggestions for what we could call it in spirit!
Now, I know Grimmsnarl isn’t entirely Baja Blast coloured. In fact, it mostly isn’t! However, I’ve chosen it for this list as it does retain the same colours as the rest of its evolutionary line, which display the Baja Blast much more prominently.
While I didn’t necessarily hunt this one, I do want to make up for that by using this Grimmsnarl as the parent for the Impidimp and Morgrem, who I plan on obtaining through Masuda Method. I feel it will help my research on the line be much more legitimate!

Baja BlastDex No. 016: Lurantis
I’ve been very excited to show this one off!! Her name is Cronenberg, and we met a very, very long time ago! She was one of the first shinies I’d ever caught, in Alola during an SOS Chain all the way back in 2016! This makes her nearly a decade old!
I’ve always found shiny Lurantis to be one of my favourites, and one of the ones that got me into researching Shiny Pokemon. As a species, Fomantis and Lurantis seem to be doing the opposite sort of camouflage that a typical orchid mantis uses. Instead of a bug attempting to look like a flower to evade predation, Lurantis is a plant who masquerades as a bug. This facade is even stronger in the Pokemon’s shiny colouration, appearing even more mantis-like with its bright greens! This leads me to believe that the shiny colouration is actually a survival adaptation, and we may very well see that become the dominant colouration for the species in the future!
Now, Kukui’s Pokedex implies that Lurantis does this as a form of self-protection as well, but that doesn’t entirely make sense to me. Both Bug and Grass Pokemon share many of the same weaknesses. And while it’s true that Grass has more weaknesses than Bug, making it desirable to appear as a Bug type so that it may deter Poison, Bug, and Ice types from attacking it, I simply don’t believe that to be the full scope of its disguise.
When looking at the origin of its name, we find that Lurantis is a combination of “Lure” and “Mantis,” and I believe that is true to its nature. There is one weakness that Bug types have, which Grass types are supereffective against. Rock types! I believe Lurantis may be masquerading as a Bug to lure out Rock types as prey. This is supported by its shiny colouration, as a Lurantis that looks even more like a bug is sure to draw in more prey, thus having an easier time surviving. It’s so fun to think that we may be in the very middle of observing the evolution of its species!

Journal Entry #1
April 12th, 2025
Professor Charli here!
I’ve decided that I’d like to document my activities, so that I may give insight into my process.
Today was a huge day for the Baja BlastDex. Last night, I began compiling all of my research, which I was able to finish this morning. I now have a working framework for how many Pokemon and which species are to be included in the Dex. On my end, the framework is actually quite in-depth. Not only did I study how closely each Pokemon relates to Baja Blast, but I left myself detailed notes on which regions and which shiny hunting methods are most optimal for each Pokemon. This girl’s got a lot of travelling to do!
I’m quite happy to have launched this blog as well! I was originally going to keep my research to myself and a few close individuals, but the drive to create something fun out of this and to try to find a spot within the shiny hunting community was very strong! I hope that as my journey progresses, I may find a comfortable niche within the community of shiny hunting professors.
Today, I’ve also begun what I expect may be the most difficult challenge in my research and shiny hunting career. Two of the Pokemon in the Baja BlastDex, and rather important ones at that, will require me to journey once more through Galar, the Isle of Armor, and the Crown Tundra. This would of course be a relatively small task, be it not for the methods involved in catching these Pokemon. For one, I must traverse countless Dynamax Adventures until I find the sparkling guardian of order from whom all Baja Blast flows. For the other, I must extensively research every Pokemon in each of the lands before the resolute warrior, the Baja freedom fighter, may appear before me. I’ve seen other researchers estimate the number of unique Pokemon to be around 650. Simply put, I must catch over half of the existing Pokedex in one region just to obtain one Pokemon for the Baja BlastDex. The things we do for science…

Baja BlastDex No. 003: Feraligatr
This big mama Gator’s name is Cali, and I caught her during the Totodile Community Day Classic on March 22, 2025!
Her and the rest of her family were caught while I was also soft resetting for a Johto starter in Heart Gold! I ended up getting a Chikorita from that on the very same day who I named Sundance. I like to envision Cali and Sundance as penpals, and I’d love to do a photoshoot with the both of them once I can finally move Sundance all the way up to the most recent games!
The Totodile line is my personal favourite starter line, and I’m so happy I got to kick this Pokedex off with this line in particular, especially since their shiny variants are all fantastic 🫶

Baja BlastDex No. 001: Totodile
I found this sleepy little guy, as well as the rest of his family in Pokemon GO on March 22, 2025 as part of Community Day Classic!
Since we’re kicking off this Dex with the Totodile line, I’ve decided to name him and his family after the origins of Baja Blast!
This cute, chompy croc’s name is Taco 🌮

Welcome, to the world of Baja Blast!
My name is Professor Charli 🫶
(she/they, pronounced shar-lee)
After many years of studying Pokemon, I was lead down the rabbit hole of a special phenomenon known as Shiny Pokemon. While seemingly no more or less capable than any regular Pokemon, these Shiny Pokemon come in colours and patterns distinct from others of its species!
This, of course, is a well-documented phenomenon. However, my purpose as a Pokemon researcher is to document a very unique and lovely subset of Shiny Pokemon that I have dubbed “Baja Blast Shinies.”
And wouldn’t you know it? As it turns out, I already have a few endearing specimens in my collection!
Therefore, I have decided to create my own Pokedex, known as the Baja BlastDex, in order to categorize them, as well as document my journey in catching ‘em all!
Each Pokemon I catch will receive special attention in their own unique Dex Entry Post, as well as get added to the below list of the full Baja BlastDex. If you would also like to join me in this journey, feel free to share pictures of your own Baja Blast Pokemon Pals and tag me!!
