AU! Balthazar can’t take it another minute at the Cohen family ranch, so he’s getting out on the first flight he can. But before he can leave, Lu Cohen has a send-off for him. E for sexual content and language. It’s basically just PWP.

Lucifer doesn’t know what to get Balthazar for his birthday. He goes through all of Balthazar’s hobbies in his mind before finally deciding on a new guitar pick. He thinks the most meaningful thing he could put on the pick is their date and initials. He hopes Balthazar will like it, what with how much he spends practicing on his guitar at home.

Lucifer hands Balthazar his birthday gift with a warm smile. Balthazar opens it cautiously, not used to seeing that smile on his boyfriend’s face. When he opens it, he nearly drops the box.

"You like it?" Lucifer asks, unsure.

Balthazar looks up to Lucifer, his blue eyes wide and wet. “I love it, Luce, thank you.”

Lucifer leans down to capture his lover’s lips with his own, feeling Balthazar’s smile as he deepens it.

Automatons didn’t feel things, automatons knew things—Balthazar knew this. He found himself falling to his knees, running his fingers through Lucifer’s short, strawberry-blond hair and wondering what would happen now. They’d been together for over a decade, and now the cooling form on the laboratory floor was all that remained of Lucifer. He knelt there, waiting for a flash of something—pain, depression, anger, even joy; he would have taken anything—but there was nothing but the feel of Lucifer’s hair sliding through his fingers.

And then he realized that he would never again feel Lucifer’s skin against his, his lips against his, their fingers intertwining; he would never again hear Lucifer’s voice murmuring against his neck, talking about some experiment or something he intended to run or adjust or discard; he would never again see Lucifer any way other than how he was now: lying in a slowly-widening pool of blood with his throat practically ripped out. All at once, Balthazar felt what he’d lost, and though he did not actually weep with real tears, he knelt over Lucifer’s body and sobbed.
