Today, my 4 year-old niece said "I'm not pretty. Don't call me that." My heart dropped with those two simple sentences, internally praying to God that she doesn't end up like me: drowning in my own insecurities.

I still continue to reminisce over the days when we were content. It comes to mind every moment I try to force myself into slumber once the sky has become a solid onyx. These were the days when we were - I dare say - happy and in love. I've told you countless times before how much you reminded me so much of a lion. Allurring. Dominant. Dangerous. How foolish of me to not notice the sharp teeth shielded by those tempting lips with your warm palms distracting me from your predatory claws. You've implanted pure adrenaline into my bones. Now I know, it was only for the simple desire to reach for my heart and leave it abandoned into shreds, dissecting everything that I would have freely given away anyway. Do you feed on the emotions of each girl you encounter for the sake of your own wellbeing? It should make sense after all. How else would you be able to tame your enormous pride - your constantly deprived ego? Yet I'm convinced you are content. You're free now - free to enjoy yourself with whomever you desire. You'll probably devour all the love out of her as well and then move on to your next prey. I get it; you don't have a lioness and probably never will. That would mean getting tied down, leaving you no freedom. I get it. You're an independent lion after all who would do anything to keep the chains off your ankles. You're a lion and I'm an ordinary deer. I should have known better when I tried to capture you that you would attack me and leave me into shreds. Besides, lions were meant to live in the jungle - no rules, no restraints, just freedom.

Sometimes you need to remind yourself that you were the one who carried you through the heartache. You are the one who sits with the cold body on the shower floor, and picks it up. You are the one who feeds it, who clothes it, who tucks it into bed, and you should be proud of that. Having the strength to take care of yourself when everyone around you is trying to bleed you dry, that is the strongest thing in the universe.
