if life's short, why does it take so long?

a ( few, not all ) things that happened at snu when sang-woo was attending:

an older professor of one of his classes remembered his father's attendance and brought him up frequently in regard to sang-woo's work, grades, and general behavior.  that wasn't great, as sang-woo didn't even know his father attended snu.

met his father for the first time in his sophomore year, post - abandonment, and had a Horrible Time, thank you very much.

sang-woo had his first "real" relationship, only to find out that his partner was using him to get ahead in their shared classes.  it broke his heart, honestly, and he's never been the same since.  he still sees this man around, as they work for similar investment firms and are in nearly the same position.  they tried again when sang-woo was in his mid - 30s, but yeah.  the man is an utter scumbag.

he began smoking early on in his first semester and still does.

he was awarded a full scholarship not only due to his academic achievements, but also because of who his father is ( a well-known government mathematician and budget analyst who still works with several politicians ).  when he found this out, yeah.  spiraling and insecurity abound!  fun!

worked tirelessly and under extreme pressure to be the best because it was expected from him in all angles of his life:  his mother, the aforementioned professor, other professors, the legacy of his father, etc., and so on.

had a breakdown in his junior year, but didn't tell anyone.  he told his mother he was spending break with friends, but he actually took a train to busan on a whim, and spent it there drinking and losing money wherever he could while renting a tiny, grimy flat.  he almost committed suicide about a week into the break, then decided against it.  he called his aunt, the only person in the world whom he truly thought understood him for more than the surface, and she helped him sober up and get it together in secret.

that same aunt died a year later of lung cancer, and sang-woo was utterly destroyed.  he didn't show it, though, and was there for his mother after graduation to help her recover from losing her sister.
