Thinking about Leona again lately and being emo about it

When I started this game I had no idea what role your "guardian" had because I avoided all spoilers, so I randomly decided to make Leona's guardian her mother.

Imagine my surprise when she started coming to Leona in her dreams, then the "reveal" much later.

I didn't know during this scene, of course, and found it very heart wrenching at the time because of the lore I had made up about Leona's mother previously, which I'll put below:

I had two possibilities for Leona's mother:

A.) She passed away not long after Leona was born.

B.) She went on a quest or journey in service of her god and simply never came back. Leona doesn't know if she's dead or alive.

Regardless, both versions have Leona never being able to remember much about her mother. She has only seen her in painted portraits and heard a few stories her father and her mother's friends have told her.

So, when this figure suddenly starts to appear in her dreams, Leona doesn't know whether to fully trust them or not, but there's a strange sense of "I've seen you before, I know you" in her thoughts that she just can't shake. It takes her until the second or so visit to realize that her dream guardian looks just like the dead mom she never met.

Despite her own worries and instincts, she can't shake off the instant feeling of trust and comfort she feels around this person who looks just like her mother, and exactly how she thought her mother would act: as her protector. Someone who could reassure her that she's doing the right things. Someone strong, brave, intelligent, and maybe out there fighting some unknown battle all alone (if this were the version where it's unknown if she's living or dead). A battle Leona has always had wished she could help her through--if only she could find her.

In this moment, she can't help but trust the vision of her mother and give her comfort back. It breaks my heart to think that Leona really saw this person as her mother and felt as if she was finally able to hug her and show her love for the first time in her life, only for it to turn out to be someone manipulating her with the mere IMAGE of her mother taken from her memories.

So, yeah, Leona is VERY pissed at The Emperor, but she's currently playing the long game with them. She'll act like the naive and tenderhearted fool who listened to them so easily before if that's what they once believed, and then stab them in the back. She isn't sure if they know exactly how vengeful she can be when made a fool of.

I have more lore about Leona's backstory on a Spelljammer ship, her mother, and why she has even more reasons to be pissed at The Emperor, but maybe I'll write a fic about it or something later.
