“John said Brian was just a sad bastard who’d been having a hard time. There were stories in Liverpool about him trying to touch up sailors and as a result getting himself beaten up or robbed. John felt sorry for him. He felt no harm had been done. The poor bastard couldn’t help the way he was. “I told him I agreed. I couldn’t see the harm either. What’s a fucking wank between friends. We’d done similar things with each other enough times when we were younger...”
Pete Shotton talking about the Barcelona trip in The Quarrymen, Hunter Davies (2001)

Very curious about the evidence for them ordering 3 hotel rooms? If you have any of it on hand.
hello hello! this is what I have readily available, from the sale of the beatles....bedsheets
Tumblr media
now, one could fairly argue that there was more than one bed in at least one of these rooms, but at the same time, I don't think it's even up to the imagination which pair of them shared a room, and after quotes from paul like "I slept with john a lot" and "in bed", imo its a pretty safe bet that there might've only been one bed
but I'm not satisfied with a safe bet! I browsed around for publicly-available hotel floor plans and couldn't find any above the first few floors. so :) instead I called the san francisco hilton at the listed address in the top right corner and asked them. obviously it's possible that things have changed in the last sixty years, but at least currently, rooms 1548 through 1550 are indeed all single king bed rooms (specifically on the 15th floor in tower 3, which was the one already constructed in 1964. thank you hilton staff)
so I'm about as sure as I can be that paul and john deliberately chose to sleep in the same bed together long after they had the money for their own rooms and beds.
which could mean nothing!

Remembering the lovely LINDA McCARTNEY who passed away on this date, April 17, 1998.
“ Linda means beautiful in Spanish, and my Linda was certainly that — inside and out. — Anyone who met her, however briefly, was touched by her genuine interest and gentle kindness. I never stop thinking of her as my girlfriend, even though she became my wife, my children's mother, and my Lady. — The beauty of her spirit never failed to communicate itself to those she encountered, whether they were young or old, male or female, or whatever, they were worthy of respect and so she treated them exactly the same and they invariably felt very comfortable being with her. — Our love of animals was something we discovered, we shared as time went by, and they too enjoyed the same deep respect given to them by her. Her vision of the world was, and is, a simple one. Love, kindness, respect and thoughtfulness for one another and for our fellow species and a deep distrust of people who neglect these values. I am blessed to have shared thirty loving years with this uniquely special woman, a fact which I will remain eternally grateful for. “
— Paul McCartney, Club Sandwich - 1998.

John Lennon's Double Fantasy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paul wrote to me from the Star Club in Hamburg once, a great letter, it even had doodles on the front of it, but it was stolen. He said that in one of the clubs one night John Lennon ended up with a stunning, exotic-looking woman—only to discover on closer inspection that she was a he, which all the other Beatles found hilarious.
Tumblr media
I used to say to him, ‘I think you’re a closet fag, you know.’ Because after we started to live together, John would say to me, ‘Do you know why I like you? Because you look like a bloke in drag. You’re like a mate.’
Tumblr media
Later that night I went to the men’s room, which I was still using sometimes rather than the ladies’, and as there was no one around I was standing at the mirror checking my make-up. I heard footsteps coming in, and I looked over and it was John Lennon. He walked right up to me and stared at me. I was dying inside. I managed to say ‘Oh, hi…’ he was smiling at me and looking at my outfit. This was during the period when he would do hardly anything without Yoko, even go to the bathroom, but here he was alone with me in the men’s room. To this day I wondered if he had followed me in. Apparently he was fascinated by transvestites; when he had been in Hamburg he had met quite a few of the girls. I think he was open minded sexually. Jayne County, Man Enough to be a Woman

He knew it was from Amie L’Nitrate [...]The Boulevard Saint-Germainegreer shone in all its springbok glory as he stepped lightly on some French loafers toward the waiting arms of Comrade Amie. [...] “First of all, I will refresh your memory,” she yodelled, chasing him round the roomservice. “Und then . . . God Only Knows by the Beachboys!” He forgot his ligns and undressed. “C’mere yer little frog,” he said, hoping for a renewal of his license. “Let me tongue yer Pommes Frites. You know what I actually want so bad for Paul and his movie? He should be allowed to write the background music for it. I actually don't want him involved in any other way because he would tie the writers hands behind their backs, but it would be so therapeutic for him to get to put music to whatever significant emotional events in his life the film covers. And how cool would that be to have the credits say "score by Paul McCartney" in a movie about Paul McCartney?

Q: You were like two sides of the same person? A: Well said. But the sides would switch. On the surface, I was very easy-going, always accommodating. That came easy to me. That’s how Id been brought up. But, at certain times, I would very much be the hard man of the duo. At certain moments, I could bite. But that would be when no one outside the group was watching, John would allow me to take that role because it enabled him to drop his guard and be vulnerable. On the surface, he was this hard, witty guy, always on hand with a cutting witticism. He appeared caustic, even cruel at times. But really he was very soft. John was very insecure.
