wasnt gonna drink tonight but im missing TJ like a mf so here's some angsty thoughts / stream of consciousness / thought dump of america's angel under the cut

idk i just feel like the whole series spends it's time with TJ trying to get the viewer to dislike him. we're put in the shoes of his family, and we see him in the same light they do. very little do we get clarity on why TJ behaves the way he does and that can form a lot of distrust/frustration in the audience.

but it doesn't work, never once have i spoken with someone who finished this show and genuinely disliked TJ, whether as a person or a character. not only because of pity, but because his story is relatable. he's a problem child, he's the talk of the town but everyone still manages to sweep him under the rug. he's a touchy subject. he's something his family is ashamed of.

this is why he has the idea for the club. he will finally have something that belongs to him, with no outside pressure to perform for america or his family. it's his, and he can do what he wants with it. he won't have to take orders from anyone. TJ's motive is that he wants control over his life, which is why he constantly relapses. it's the only thing he has complete, independent control over.

so when his family refuses this? refuses him control? he spirals. he splits on everybody and loses himself in sex and coke because if he can't have the club, he can have this. he can have something to himself.

i believe this also ties into how he acts in his relationship with Sean. it's TJ's first time experiencing a close relationship that he feels comfortable in. he doesn't feel like anything is being taken from him, he feels truly loved. he gets sober because he doesn't need to cling to drugs for control, he has stability in Sean. and when Seam drops him? when the man he loves, finds security in, decides he isn't worth it? he goes full send and decides that there's no point in trying.

TJ views himself as completely unfixable (until the end of ep6, of course.) his family does, too, so he has nobody in his life telling him that there's a way out. Everyone has given up on him, simply accepted that this is just "how he is" and nothing will change. they expect him to crawl his way out of this hole, but nobody even bothered giving him a ladder. nobody believed in him, so why should he believe in himself?
