Haruno Sakura

It’s strange that in a world where clans and bloodlines hold so much importance in a person’s standing in society and how they are treated that throughout the manga, we never really find out about Sakura’s family/clan/background.

Clan name and symbol

She has a clan symbol that she displays on her back. But what do others think when they see it? There is no reaction in the manga. It’s not clear if at the end of the manga she abandons it or wears both the Uchiha and Haruno crest.

People don’t recognize the Haruno name. Sakura was bullied as a child. Hinata, while having a similar shy personality wasn’t targeted by bullies.

Even after garnering respect for training under Tsunade and proving her ability, nobody really says how she is an asset to her clan, or how she is a rare talent that came out of a non-ninja or nobody clan.

Her parents are not actually there in the manga…

There is a scene in the anime where Sakura is going to the academy and we hear Sakura’s mother. This scene doesn’t exist in the manga. We don’t ever hear or see Sakura’s parents. Oddly, Sakura doesn’t think about them during the Sound/Sand invasion or when Pein attacks. They don’t come in to check on her. Admittedly, she is never the patient in the hospital before or after training with Tsunade. Her parents are also not eventual comrades in the fourth war… Pointing to perhaps them not being ninja. They also don’t get any attention when most of Konoha is hiding in shelters from ongoing attacks.

Sakura mentions them in chapter three. According to her, if she acted the way Naruto did, they would ground her for months. They “always tell you what to do and what not to do”. Meaning she often plays by their rules in the house.

Many of her classmates have an established dynamic with their parents. What is hers? Does it evolve as she goes through her ninja career? Were they proud when she became Tsunade’s apprentice? Or was sent on a diplomatic mission to Sand? Do they know that she likes Sasuke? What did they think when her crush left not only the team but also the village?

Appearance

Sakura’s hair is very distinct. We never really see more pink-haired people in the manga. The average person has brown hair and eyes. Also noteworthy is that we don’t see random red-heads, blondes, blue haired or white-haired people.

Parent’s Occupation

We don’t know if her parents are ninja or not. If not ninja, what other profession are they in? Would Sakura not take pride in being the first ninja in her family? What was her motivation for wanting to be a ninja? Tenten looks up to Tsunade. Did Sakura know about her from before? Or about any other Kunoichi? Who inspired her? Was it just her drive to be with Sasuke and impress him that helped her make it through the Academy? She technically lost to Ino in ranking since Ino is noted in the databook to have ranked just behind Sasuke.

Ninjutsu/Taijutsu

Sakura doesn’t have any unique ninjutsu or taijutsu. She uses her book smarts, pluck, analytical ability and chakra control. Meaning she has nothing to inherit from her family with regards to ninjutsu. Her arsenal is made up of techniques she learned in the academy and later through Tsunade. She doesn’t have any direction without a sensei. No senpai or extended family. Inner Sakura appeared to be a keystone in her developing genjutsu ability or genjutsu negation, but it disappeared without explanation. A common explanation is that she no longer feels the need to hide behind a good-girl persona to express herself.

Her lack of techniques is highlighted in her battle against Ino, where she didn’t have any ninjutsu, even a D-rank technique, that wasn’t an academy exam test technique.

Shikamaru had no idea on how he could utilize her within a strategy during the sand invasion. Although, he didn’t know how to use Naruto either. At this point Shikamaru knew that he had kage bunshin but not about toad summon. Sakura didn’t have any informed ability or anything during the academy that helped her stand out as a kunoichi.

Her room

In chapter 319, we see Sakura in her room. This is the only vantage point of her room. It’s sparsely decorated. You can call it practical, neat or austere. 

There are rectangles on the walls that could be images that weren’t detailed in - unlikely, as then they would have been roughly shaded in. The official colored version of this panel shows them as white rectangles.

There is a body-length mirror, a hamper with nothing in it and a small coffee table with nothing on it and a sitting pillow beside it. 

There is a plant hanging over her pillow. 

Her bed is right beside the window overlooking some trees. 

The bedspread and blanket doesn’t have any patterns on it. Kakashi has shuriken patterns on his. 

The calligraphy on the wall says  一生 (A lifetime), 愛の (romantic love), 人生 (human life). This comes from the databook:  "A life with love throughout!“ (一生愛の人生よ!, Isshōai no jinsei yo!). 

The only image in her room is the photograph in her hand of team 7. No Ino, no parents, no favourite cousin, no happy memories at festivals as a child. Nothing.

Potential Impact

Sakura’s background would’ve been a great way to add to the world of Naruto. Who are the Haruno? When did they join Konoha? Was it during the time of the Shodaime? What business do they run so that they can afford to have a comfortable life in the village? Was Sakura meant to be a contrast to Ino in the sense that one is from a ninja clan and one from a non-ninja clan? Did Sakura know her grandparents?

Is it not bizarre that her classmates and many more people have an established background, yet she does not?
