Reinventing a piazza | Urban Design Summer School at BASE Milano

From 3 to 16 July, BASE Milano in collaboration with raumlaborberlin will organize a summer school open to students and professionals from the design and architecture fields. The urban design training programme focuses on working hands-on redesigning a public space, open to the city for events and community living.

L’installazione per Design Nomade approfondisce le regole che caratterizzano la creazione di uno spazio temporaneo. La definizione di un limite ricopre un ruolo primario; la percezione del perimetro ci permette di riconoscere l’appartenenza ad una comunità spaziale o di definire il proprio spazio vitale. Nell’età del neo- nomadismo la definizione del proprio spazio lavorativo o abitativo è leggera e modificabile.

Blur traduce questa necessità nella creazione di uno spazio che deve rispondere alle stesse esigenze: pareti di tessuto delineano uno spazio multifunzionale, aprendo però alla possibilità di variare rapidamente la sua natura. Il sistema costruttivo, basato su un pilastro composito in morali di abete e da tessuti in lino/seta, permette alla struttura di essere essa stessa perimetro chiuso, parete libera, espositore, scenografia e partizione interna.

Design Nomade  @ BASE Milano, 4-9 April

How is the design of objects, interiors and public spaces changing in the era of mobile technology and neo-nomadism? Remote working, cloud computing, co-working, freelancing, frequent travelling: what is the impact of these phenomena on industrial design? How are the shapes, materials, interfaces, uses, and archetypes of design changing?

“Design Nomade” is the first expository project to be entirely curated and produced by BASE Milano, with guidance from Stefano Mirti, and put together from the contributions to come out of an international call.

Water Bed, by Daniel Durnin

Camping out along the waterways of the city rather than on solid ground, seeing the city from an unusual perspective, one that is mobile and shifting. Water Bed is a minimalist, nomadic shelter which offers the possibility of camping out in the urban environment using the waterways that cross the landscape. Marrying the concept of the raft with that of the floating house, the Water Bed offers a new housing solution.

In addition to providing a low-cost form of accommodation, economically positioned between the affordability of a hostel and the ease of movement offered by a tent, the Water Bed aims to drastically reduce the impact of quick mass tourism by providing a system to foster a micro-tourism tied to the local economy. Daniel Durnin’s work seeks not only to reassess the environment and big-city life, and encourage the use of waterways and canals, but also sets out to provoke a debate on the use of the public and private domain.

To Many Places, by Emmy Polkamp

 Festivals are perhaps the most nomadic form that a cultural event can take: they are temporary, moving from one city to the next and they summon up vast numbers of people. In response to the growing number of festivals and the logistical issues involved, Emmy Polkamp gives us To Many Places.

The project is a pop-up hotel, designed to be set up in abandoned or ex-industrial spaces. The bedrooms are hyper-functional tents and the space is set up in such a way as to weave the interior into the local environment. To Many Places is also autonomous in terms of transport and logistics, providing a range of facilities from Wi-Fi to running water. The project has been shown at various international events and was even installed in a church during the 2016 Dutch Fashion Week.

Family Stick - Un Posto a BASE, by Francesco Bombardi

Laser cut technology is used to create a small cluster of sticks designed to change the way you approach snacking. Family Stick is a family of skewers developed by Francesco Bombardi for the restaurant “Un posto a Milano”, tying into the theme of nomadism.

It consists of a compact travel kit which can be deployed in a variety of ways depending on the dish, allowing you to tuck in wherever you are.

Solari. Portable Outdoor Solar Cooker, by Bodin Hon

Solari is a small, functional, solar-powered kitchen which is portable and was designed principally for outdoor use. It is perfectly suited to a nomadic lifestyle and offers an alternative to the traditional method of cooking on an open flame. 

It leaves no residue and functions independently of other sources of energy such as gas, wood, or biomass, counteracting the carbon footprint left by efforts to obtain such fuels. For anyone who lives a less mobile lifestyle, but has access to an outdoor space such as a terrace or garden, it presents a valid and eco-friendly alternative to the barbecue. With his project Solari, Bodin Hon has pioneered a new approach to outdoor cooking and won a number of international prizes including the International Compasso d’Oro 2015.
