my babys during a mission on Vineta, having found a small alcove to set up camp and rest... enjoying themselves while they still have the chance to, blissfully unaware of the fate that awaits them when they return. i imagine they're talking about what they want to do when they get back, what they want to see, how they'll spend their time together before their next mission.. Is it so cruel to keep them shielded from their reality? In AEON's eyes, keeping the truth hidden lets them work more efficiently, therefore it is benificial to let them keep their naive hope. Though that doesn't answer the question of cruelty. Ah well... at least they were happy in the moment, right?

Flu's been killing me. So I chilled today and roughly manifested the girls' portraits without yet committing to properly writing down The Lore. Thoughts/questions/assumptions appreciated :D

Something not visible on the picture: Kanarie has three halos like Falke, but hers are placed one each under her right ear, on her left arm and her right ankle, appearing as sorta earring and shackles. Lyudmila's left leg is amputated below the knee and she wears a running prosthetic.

ohhh beobachterin the absolute fucking FREAK that you are. her smile is meant to be unnerving, she doesn't do it to be friendly, rather she does it to intimidate. i've mentioned this briefly before but not many people saw it; beobachterin has a thing for teeth. she finds them pretty, especially the ones belonging to a certain Kolibri unit. (Maus was not happy to find the Storch had stolen her tooth while she was unconsious, and put it on a string to act as a necklace no less.) also the quote at the top is an excerpt from Decomission Order :3

Hey hello hi I saw those tags on your corrupted kasuar post (which I will of course yell abt later bc TEEHEE) but. Eiche’s had experience with corrupted units 👁️👁️? I’d be curious to hear more about that but I also don’t know if you’re planning on talking abt it

I was KINDA planning on yapping about it (in theory. It was on the itinerary but wasn't gonna happen) So I'm glad you popped in! So Eiche, before she got with the others, was part of a strike team on a communications outpost that mysteriously and suddenly went dark. She was part of the initial scout team to investigate. Surely it was some sort of Imperial attack. Surely.

It wasn't.

Orders were to simply investigate and if possible repel the imperials. Whatever the FUCK was happening, that wasn't really applicable anymore. The Kolibri in charge swiftly ordered retreat and eventually had the outpost bombed into the ground. The area was intentionally irradiated to prevent exploration.

Of the 20 personnel of the group, 11 of which Eiche has known since her deployment- including her girlfriend- only Eiche and commanding kolibri lived. Eiche wasn't all there, either. She lost her left arm and leg, plus a good portion of her sanity.

There are no records of the incident. Officially speaking, the strike team was ambushed by imperials. ÆON officials were actually going to decomission Eiche for censorship security purposes. Fortunately for her, a Starling unit caught wind of her favorite Kasuar's upcoming execution (she didn't ever know why the execution was taking place, only that Eiche didn't deserve it.) and had Eiche transferred. The commanding officers tried to track Eiche but the systems where Kasuars are filed are distressingly neglected. The Vast majority of Kasuars don't even have designations other than KSAR. (most die in the first 2 weeks. Why bother?) Eiche had a number it's long since been lost. She was safe.

So now Eiche has to carry with her the scenes of abhorrent monstrosities that are corrupted units plus all her best friends dying in front of her by being literally torn apart. She can't ever talk about it- lest she face the execution. Who'd believe her anyway? Not long after was her first suicide attempt.

Corrupted Kasuars can be found roaming abandoned battlefields, outposts, and old patrol routes. Under the influence of corruption, Kasuars feature 1-3 additional arms, generally erupting from their sides in cancerous growths but can also grow from the abdomen, chest, and spine.  Smaller or shorter arms, usually just the hand and forearm, can grow from anywhere, including but not only the neck, head, legs, and larger arms. The arms grow much like weeds, tearing through and splitting the gaps in the Kasuar’s outer shell, contorted and mutated. The cancerous growths are poor, deformed attempts at human limbs, often featuring fingers fused together and bones protruding from the arms.The growths do not stop growing at any point, and will tear themselves from the body, writhing on the floor before dying. Because Kasuars are stationed in large numbers, the corrupted units will generally be found in large infestations.

The corrupted unit will grow bulbous, cancerous eyes from all over. These eyes will grow primarily on the tumorous arms and spread across the body, eventually giving corrupted units a wide, sometimes 360° field of view. They can see independently of one another. Kasuars in dark areas such as mines will grow even more eyes. These cancers appear to see in the dark. Fortunately, they also have an odd, eerie glow- alerting non-corrupted personnel to their presence.

Killing corrupted kasuars is difficult at best, despite their subpar bodily integrity. The flesh of these units is weak, even weaker than that of Eules. The odd and unharmonious growths cause further weakening. A single rifle round should tear off a limb. However, the units appear to survive both near-lethal and lethal wounds, the corruption only strengthening their uncanny refusal to die. A shotgun blast will tear them in half, and the creatures will drag themselves across the floor, using their arms in an insectoid fashion. They are, even when crawling, deceptively fast and can outrun even vehicles, overexerting their bodies and may destroy themselves in the process. Destroying the heart will cause a Kasuar to suffocate without oxygen and at first glance seems ideal. Do not get comfortable. Even after full organ failure, Kasuars will survive for minutes and possibly hours before painfully suffocating. Decapitation of the head is most effective. Ample usage of explosives is also useful. Burning, while effective, does not kill them immediately. They will literally burn to their bones and organs before dying. Use only high-pressure streams of napalm that can physically push the units back so as to keep them at bay. This method will create distance and kill effectively. Simply burning them will kill them very, very slowly. Shock batons are only somewhat effective. They may slow the unit but ultimately it will take 2-3 batons to take them down. It is recommended to simply eradicate infestations of non-vital facilities via artillery, air strikes, or orbital explosives. 

When killed, the corrupted Kasuars will revive quickly. The only way to ensure they won’t revive is to destroy the head. Thermites are usually but not always effective. Explosives are recommended.

The mouths of these units will constantly melt into itself, sealing the jaw shut. Painfully, the newly-welded skin will tear open when they open their mouths. As they are almost always in abject agony, kasuars will often oscillate between utter silence and emitting moans or screams of pain through their wounded oral cavities. Beneath their constantly tearing facial skin are teeth that mutated and grew into large, sharp, animalistic ones, sometimes catching on the mending facial tissue and tearing it further open. 

In a fashion that can only be described as sick, cruel, and horridly twisted, corrupted kasuars are at least partly conscious in their state. They can speak through split mouths and will beg to be put down, for help, or to not be alone. If observed secretly, they will mutter about being failures, deserving their fate, and how much they should suffer, as well as other hateful remarks of themselves. Some will use their own leaking blood to draw effigies of eyes and other odd, religious symbols on nearby walls. Conversing with them is difficult, as they can have trouble understanding speech or forming coherent sentences, either due to pain or the corruption itself. While their alleged consciousness is clearly a curse to them, it is beneficial to living personnel. For corrupted units, they are remarkable docile, and won’t attack unless you attack them, other corrupted units, or get too close too fast. Raising a weapon will also engage them. It is technically possible to converse and even befriend the units. When not engaged, they will observe living personnel eerily and passively through weary, pained eyes. If not engaged and one seems friendly, non-threatening, or otherwise unaggressive, corrupted kasuars may loosely follow personnel, akin to a shy but trusting prey animal. They can even aid personnel by giving their access cards, ammunition, knowledge, and weapons, though communication is tough and awkward. They will not aid in combat, seeing other corrupted units as allies. ÆON specifically forbids engaging corrupted units in a friendly manner. Official orders are to put down corrupted kasuars as quickly as possible, and to use their docility as an advantage to strike. Remember, decapitation of the head or explosives are most effective!

Beyond being distracted by their pains, it is also thought that the constant torment has rendered the majority of them insane. Either the insanity or corruption has lost them their sense of self, unable to remember their names, memories, or loved ones outside of vague, unsettling feelings. Some have speculated if it were possible to heal or help the corrupted units, but no attempts have been made due to ÆON protocol.

If a corrupted Kasuar does become aggressive, they will rapidly rush living units, dragging them to the floor and trapping them with their arms, then savagely claw the victim open. They will also use their teeth in shockingly powerful bites, usually to the neck. Swarms will grab and tear enemies apart like rats to meat. It has been observed that after killing, corrupted kasuars will revert to a docile state and will cry over the corpse- if coherent speech is formed, it will generally be expressions of remorse, regret, or intense self-hate.

Rin letting Maus touch her at all took a good couple of months after they first met, and that was just simple things like handshakes or shoulder pats. To let anybody touch her like this? Its kind of a Big Deal for Rin. And to let a KOLIBRI touch her like this??? i would yap more but... brain is tired, its 2am and i cant think. anyway
