listen i rlly do get why ppl dont like uwu baby fanon virgil but im begging people to stop talking abt it as if it's immoral and wrong to interpret the character that way, because it kills me a little every time and i know for a fact it hurts others too

we are all just broken little things in this honest to gosh wasteland of a world trying to find a morsel of happiness to keep us going, and if that's interpreting a fictional character in a way that brings us comfort then so be it

it is not wrong, it is not somehow offensive - this is a fictional character we're talking about remember

guys, having personal preferences as wel as stating them is okay of COURSE it is - you can hate uwu baby virgil to your hearts content idc you can be open about it if u so wish too - but my problem is when people believe they somehow have the moral highground for hating it and act as if the people who DO find comfort in it are commiting a cardinal sin

"you're disrespecting his boundaries" -> HE'S NOT REAL you cannot upset a fictional character because they are not in this plane of existence

"anxiety isn't like that" -> lemme tel you something. my anxiety IS like that. my anxiety makes me cry and tremble when i meet new people and it makes me sensitive and it makes me stutter and it makes me blush and it makes me typically uwu baby. you don't have a monopoly over ALL anxiety, you understand your own and no one elses. don't make generalised assumptions please

and that's why it bothers me. i project onto virgil i basically make him ME and its all because i need comfort in the form of fictional worlds and that's okay. but then people talk about how that specific interpretation is UNREALISTIC and OFFENSIVE and DUMB and it hurts because that is someone's comfort and someone's projection that you're calling those mean words. it is not just me who does this i know that basically everyone in fandom projects onto their fav characters so before you tear down someones interpretation, consider you might be unknowingly attacking THEIR personality

basically: not everything is a sociopolitical statement. if someone wants to draw virgil blushing it doesnt mean they think anxiety makes you weak. if someone writes about virgil sobbing and being comforted by his friends that doesnt mean they think he is purely innocent in canon.

let people project onto characters and if you don't like it then DON'T INTERACT it's that simple!

Spidey Training is Going Well 🕸

So! Here’s the project I’ve been working on for the past several days!  I was going for a sort’ve.. Modern Princey inspired pseudo letterman.. Thing. 

I painted all the buttons gold, hand sewed the gold trim onto the collar and cuffs, ironed on the R and the shoulder filigree (And then added some stitches to hold them on just in case,) and made the crown out of sparkly gold transfer paper. The section of the emblem and the Princey I had to take to a shop where they have an embroidery machine, but.. I can’t imagine how else that could of happened. But anyway! Here’s my new Princey jacket! More pictures below the cut to show before and after.  (tentatively tagging @thatsthat24​ because I’m really proud of it :D )

Keep Him Safe, and Why a Lot of People Think It’s Bad

Short answer: It’s because it is Long answer: Coming straight outta the gate, I’m just going to say this first: It’s copoganda. Not even gonna sugarcoat that shit. It’s copoganda. Don’t try to clown or be a dumbass in my notes because you’re mad I’m calling out your fave. Eva isn’t this unproblematic queen. She’s white, she’s cis, she’s straight, and she’s pulling the white victimhood bullshit. I haven’t really gone in depth about why Keep Him Safe is so shitty in the first place because I was recovering from the altruistic-skittles situation (still am, to be completely honest) but I guess I might as well.   YAS WE STAN ONE WHITE LIBERALIST KWEEN (COPOGANDA SECTION) Addressing this one first because you could technically dismiss it on the basis of her discontinuing the fic because she knows better now (even though she didn’t put up a discontinuation notice or explain earlier that she knew better now, which kind of makes the whole ‘I discontinued it!’ thing comes off as an excuse more than anything.) Logan and Roman are cops, Logan and Roman are actively glorified for being cops, and Patton is a cop apologist. These were the ingredients to create the perfect little white liberalist fanfic! I think a really, really good way to show how absolutely deep this cop apologism goes is in Roman’s backstory. Roman came from a rich, white, republican family (emphasis on the republican and not much else). He had a lot of internalized homophobia. Him becoming a police officer was framed as him turning his back against evil, even though there’s like. Plenty of other ways you can do that without beating the shit out of minorities? Like becoming a teacher? Becoming a political musician? Investing in the arts? Investing in the community? Seriously there are so many other nonlethal ways he could turn his back and piss off conservatives, but white liberalism for the win ig. THE MISTRESS IS NO BETTER THAN THE MASTER (SEXISM SECTION) “But the author’s a woman!” you say. “How can a woman be sexist?” She’s white, Jan. Emphasizing her femininity like the fact that she’s cishet and white doesn’t affect how she writes other women is just stupidity at this point. Anyways, most of the older women in this fic are just. Extremely, extremely predatory. Towards Logan especially. Even after some of these older women know they’re gay they still act predatory. Some examples of weirdly predatory older straight women include Mrs. Van der Beek or the knitting circle that holds meetings in the Pat-isserie. Think a lot of straight men’s feelings towards lesbians if you don’t get the idea. I DON’T HAVE A FUNNY TITLE FOR THIS. JUST DON’T DO THIS. (FATPHOBIA SECTION) Patton is described as soft, softer than anything. However, any mention of him being described as chubby, or god forbid *fat*, is pushed aside. There’s this trend in the fic that the small Patton and Virgil have to be protected by the tall and muscular Logan and Patton, which is. Gross. Extremely gross. NEUROTYPICALS STAY CLOWNING (ABLEISM SECTION) Logan is an autistic stereotype. He’s cold, he’s calculating, he doesn’t understand emotions. He’s also just unnecessarily cruel. There’s a scene where he throws shit around and Patton(who is a victim of abuse) is obviously scared and it’s framed as a meltdown. But then Patton notices that Logan is only breaking his own stuff so it’s ✨all ok ✨(it’s not). Like not only is that normalizing shit behavior because of neurodivergency (classic white apologism move), it’s linking anger issues to autism which. Hm. Yikes. THE AUDACITY OF THE CAUCASITY (RACISM SECTION) I don’t even have the notes to begin on the just. Sheer amount of racist bullshit in this fic. Let’s start with Patton, I guess. We might as well use the paragraph that “ The newcomer was shorter than Logan. Softer too. Where Logan was all long lines, straight posture and efficient movements, the other man appeared much less intimidating. Or in fact, not at all. His pale skin was adorned with a rosy flush on his cheeks… His stub nose was also liberally dusted with flour.“ Patton is immediately noted to be less intimidating than Logan. He’s also repeatedly noted throughout the fic to be sweet, innocent, a sunshine child, who’s pure of heart. He’s also immediately noted to be white. Cool. Aside from that, there’s also the dreaded Paragraph, which has become somewhat of an inside joke within the fanders of color community. It’s in chapter 16, where Roman tells Virgil his life story. The dreaded paragraph goes as follows: “Once again, Roman managed to find something in his story that turned his sad mockery of a smile into a real one. He always seemed to focus on the positive things. His green eyes sparkled, his face looked dreamy as he remembered the teen. “He had the coolest hair – a pitch black Afro he would tie back for school, and a super adorable stub of a nose!” Roman giggled at the memory. “I tried getting more tan to match his pretty, black skin for a while. I got horribly sunburned, of course! I am only a sunshine child at heart, apparently. My magnificent mother in the sky would not spare my fair skin!” There’s. A lot to unpack in that one paragraph. I’ll just put it into bulletpoints: - Black people don’t have stub noses. Just like we don’t got thin lips, we don’t have stub noses. Have you even met a black person before? - Tanning your skin to look like a black person’s skin(ie, tanning your skin to be more ‘exotic~’) is such a fucked up concept in of itself and I have no fucking idea how she did not catch that in her own work. - “I am only a sunshine child at heart, apparently. My magnificent mother in the sky would not spare my fair skin!” I. You know? I was gonna type out a big thing regarding how weird and fucked up this sentence is but you know what? This is self explanatory. THE STRAIGHTS ARE AT IT AGAIN (HOMOPHOBIC/TRANSPHOBIC SECTION) Addressing this section last because let’s be honest, this is the only section all of y’all actually give a shit about. Roman is a gay predator stereotype. No beating around the bush, no dressing it up in flowery language. Roman is a gay predator stereotype. He has no sense of consent.  Literally in the first chapter, he forced Logan into his bed(non-sexually) even though Logan told Roman to get off of him. And no, I’m not ignoring the fact that he thought it was ‘nice’ afterwards, that doesn’t change the fact that they were both drunk, Roman overpowered Logan, and ignored him even though he said no. He was also just weirdly, weirdly possessive of Virgil, who’s a victim of sexual abuse. Calling him cat names, waxing poetic when he met him ONCE. The fact that this is a thirty year old man talking about a guy in his early twenties does not make it better. Also hate to break it to y’all but the relationship dynamics between Logan and Patton as well as Virgil and Roman are also just extremely heteronormative. Logan and Roman, the big muscular strong men protecting the innocent pure  smaller and skinnier Patton and Virgil. Patton, as he usually does, gets put into the funky little female gender role. He cooks, he cleans, he takes care of others, he takes on a submissive role in the relationship. He’s cute and small and young and colorful and Logan is cold and strong and protective (seriously the fact that there is a 10 year age gap between the two (Patton being in his 20s and Logan in his 30s) does not make it any better). And man, don’t even get me started on Remy and Logan’s relationship with him. Remy is a transmasc stereotype. He’s extremely effeminate and he has a metrosexual accent(which mind you, is literally just bastardized AAVE). Considering that iirc, he is not just the only transmasc character but the only trans character in Keep Him Safe in GENERAL, it’s less representing GNC trans people and more playing up stereotypes. Remy is deadnamed and misgendered multiple times(mostly by Logan). Remy’s deadname is literally just a ‘genderbent’ version of Remy (Which by the way? Is a gender neutral name, so there was really no reason to change it.) Now here’s my opinion on misgendering in fanfiction: It’s fine if you misgender a few times, but only if it’s not spoken. There’s always an adjustment period, I can understand that. However, is the misgendering is consistent then that’s transphobic. Deadnaming, especially if you’re a cis writer, is never acceptable ever. This fanfiction does literally both of these things, and plays it off like it’s less serious than it is. So yeah, lmao, that trans rep trash. (MISC. SECTION) These are things that were either too brief, not as important as the others, or I didn’t know how to fit these into the other sections. -The fact that Remy’s transition was called a ‘sex change’ -This should’ve been a Logince fic. Literally so much of the weird creepy gay predator stuff would’ve been cut off if this were a Logince fic. Seriously they should’ve been in a QPR. It’s what they deserve. -There’s this weird sort of sexual focus on hands and wrists throughout the entirety of the fic -The only archive warning is graphic depictions of violence even though rape/non-con should be there too. Rape/non-con is only in the additional tags section. -Patton wears long sleeves that slip over his hands at his place of work, which he cannot do. Not because it’s illegal to cover up, but because the fabric would contaminate the food. That’s some dirty ass pastries y’all eating lmao. -The dialogue is hard to distinguish, especially since the author doesn’t do dialogue tags. I can’t tell who’s talking a lot of the time. MY PROBLEMS WITH EVA’S RESPONSE TO THE SITUATION The responses I am referring to are here: x, x If you want an example of what white victimhood is, here you go. A whole ass mess here. So first of all, @whatwashernameagain, and yes I’m dropping @s now, minorities aren’t obligated to be kind to you. Especially regarding racist, transphobic, homophobic, and ableist shit. It’s like y’all learned nothing from the Cat situation. Second, when minorities are silent about shit, it’s usually because we’re scared we’re gonna get backlash for it, because we think we’re overreacting, or because we think we’re the only ones who feel this way. Each of these making sense considering that for the first one, your fic was extremely popular, and for the second two, we don’t really know if there are people like us in the fandom. A lot of these people are only speaking up now because they just got a support system. Third, the police aren’t just shitty in America, they’re just not to people like you. Fourth, hiding behind victimhood does nothing to make me sympathize with you. If anything it makes me more frustrated. Like seriously the fuck you think I’m gonna say to that? Boo hoo :( the poor white 30 year old TEACHER :(( got called out for her racism :((. Who’s gonna coddle her? :( Who’s going to make her feel better? :((( Five, demonizing a bunch of people of color and calling them a hate cult does not make me think that you’re going to be understanding in the slightest. You are literally being more immature than the kids who are calling you out.       In conclusion, Keep Him Safe is a bad fanfic. Don’t read it, especially if you’re a person of color. I bore that burden for you just to type this essay of a post up. Do not jettison my gift. Don’t read it. Please. Just don’t. Don’t read it.
