Nightwing Annual #1 (2018)
Nobody knows me better. Nobody makes me smile more. Even in the middle of a hard time. Wherever Babs is…feels like home.

Aside from your credit card, what’s even in your wallet? About thirty bucks, some business cards I’ll never look at, and a fine collection of old receipts. Right, well, your pocket-trash collection is approaching the street below you.

bettyonair:
something resembling a laugh slips past betty’s lips as she gives her roommate a dubious look. nice wasn’t the word that betty would have used to describe that place. she realised that maybe she had taken her old family apartment for granted; who knew it was so tough to find an apartment in the city that wasn’t disgusting but also affordable? suddenly, a window that didn’t open properly or a/c that only works if it’s turned on in a particular way were problems that didn;t seem all that bad now. “it was gross. i’m pretty sure i saw a rat in the kitchen.” a shudder runs down her spine as she wrinkles her nose. “i don’t mind. i’m sure it can’t get any worse now.” there’s an edge of hopefulness to her voice but she’s not sure if she truly believes that.
❝ at least the rats could eat the roaches up . ❞ she replies as she starts down the road if they need to up their budgets , barbara is sure she could find a way to make some more money . the library job doesn’t offer much but - that combined with some . . . freelancing , could bring at least a few hundred more a month to their budget alone . ❝ tell you what . if the next one doesn’t work out the way we want it to , we’ll up our budget . i've got savings to spare , anyways . ❞ barbara lies , voice unwavering . ❝ best put them to a good cause . ❞

“ I GET THAT , ” donna nods , bringing her drink up to their lips . “ i took up freelance photography and i occasionally work for the bugle now . ” it could be worse . they could be directly working for jameson . “ have you decided which library you wanna work for ? ”
❝ that’s not so bad . ❞ barbara offers with a smile . ❝ not sure yet . depends where i settle in . maybe the brooklyn once . there’s this one - jefferson market - that used to be a fire lookout tower . i’d be lying if i said it didn’t interest me . ❞

❝ i mean , we could fight - if that’s what you need right now . ❞ barbara replies as she gets closer , coming up on him from behind . she knows better , knows not to approach any of them without words . he’d heard her though , and that was enough . ❝ but , and you know i hate to say this , i’m kind of exhausted . i’m thinking more like . . . darts , or something . ❞
he’d never been able to stand the silence for long; filling it with sounds of every footstep that came pondering adjacent to his being ( not to mention the BLATANT trauma response he had, heightening every sound — listening for familiarity ). sometimes, when he shuts his eyes, he’s back there: in the darkness that came with death and the saddest part was how peaceful it seemed. If he’s honest with himself he’d admit he’s waiting on it — that every fight just brings him one step closer. “ out of ammo…but my aim’s still fucking great. ”

THAT WAS THE NICE THING ABOUT barbara , who cut to the chase instead of getting caught up in reunions. bruce leads the way to their destination. ❝ just this once ? ❞ he responds with a mumble. it’s innocent , teasing barbara with his childishness remains a favorite pastime. ❝ it’s nice seeing you too , are you settling into the city well ? ❞
❝ 'course . when’s the last time you did anything without a partner ? ❞ she questions , laughter in her tone . ❝ it’s not bad . uh , i found my dad . which . . . helps . but still just trying to find everyone . ❞ she’s good though , really . good in a way she hasn’t been in a long time . ❝ didn’t think i’d miss gotham so much , though . how have you been dealing ? is it hard not being the most famous man in town ? ❞

“ you’ll find that most coffee places barely serve the best in the city - ” cindy supplies , falling into step with the other . she’d lived in new york all her life , even if there’d been some passing time during the #BunkerYears , as some of cindy’s peers would say . “ any 24 hour diner on a corner of a street should just about do it . ”
❝ that bad , huh ? ❞ barbara sighs , her hopes lowering . ❝ guess a diner can’t be that bad , i could use lunch , too . and i mean , if you’re correct - then i’ll have a dozen others to test out . ❞

“like medieval times swords and shields?” that didn’t make any sense to him. guess after all even while looking young he wasn’t really in tune with the times. “this is going to be harder than i thought.”
❝ more like corporations . ❞ barbara corrects , smile appearing on her lips . ❝ defence ones , but they had opportunities for anything from office work to field work . ❞

❝ we are absolutely not going to ignore that . ❞ barbara remarks , ❝ first editions are far too important to let them go , whether they hold sentimental value or not . ❞ fundamentals of quantum theory , huh ? that’s some advanced level knowledge there - something she’d be keen on reading , herself . ❝ and no , no coffee for me - not near the books . . . let’s see - dab up what you can then when you get home you’ll need vinegar , water , and an iron . should help . ❞
It’s strange to be faced with a reflection so…FAMILIAR and yet entirely separate; to see mirrored back a face that reflected a painful period, one he avoided — if he was being entirely honest — but there was a perk to his plights. that perhaps now, he’d have a little more time and selfishly ( and ignoring all maudlin theatrics ), that meant being able to help more people. if this was to become a game of chess to be won in their favour, they’d all need all the help they could get. “ we are absolutely going to ignore the fact that I just spilt coffee on my great grandfather’s first edition… ” he gives a plain smile, attempting to dab at the pages with little luck. “ granted, i’m certain he won’t miss the fundamentals of quantum theory — wasn’t a very…educationally led man. ” and lucky for charles, he’d already memorised the majority of the books in his families personal library. “ do you want one ? ” he raises a brow, upon realisation that a distinction may be needed. “ beverage that is — unless you favour coffee soaked antiques ? ”

“ how are you so calm ? ” scott asks , disbelief written all over his face . he’s mostly pissed because this was a brand new t-shirt , and while he knows it’s practically tempting fate to wear a white shirt anywhere at all … well , was it so wrong of him to hope that murphy’s law might leave him alone for like an hour ? “ hang on , let me grab something to clean up . ” for once , he’s thankful for being a relatively unknown hero ( especially around here ) — it means there aren’t any people trying to take more photos , he can easily duck past the other customers in the cafe to grab a wad of paper napkins from the counter & make it back to the site of the incident . “ mostly , i’m worried someone i know will see it , and then they won’t let me forget about it . ” cough cough sam and rhodey , menaces that they are cough cough .
❝ you don’t have siblings , do you ? ❞ barbara remarks , ❝ my sisters tend to do far worse than mock each other . ❞ it’s all in good fun though . she knows that all of the bat fam love one another dearly . she sighs when he walks away , taking in the damage . it’s not bad , nothing a good cleaning shouldn’t fix . when he returns , barbara grabs some of the napkins , using one to wipe off the tops of her wheels and the others to pat down her lap . ❝ i mean , if they have something to say about it - just insult them for making fun of the girl in the chair . ❞ barbara suggests , letting out a laugh . ❝ that should shut them up . ❞

DOWN BY HIS SHOULDER HE CATCHES a glimpse of barbara. he gives the young apprentice a weak grin. ❝ starbucks is still a thing. ❞ he notes with a shrug. ❝ my treat ? i’ll lead the way too . . . gosh , it’s almost like i have to everything myself around here. ❞
❝ there’s one on every corner , so i hear . ❞ barbara replies with a nod , glancing up to her once mentor . ❝ that would be nice , and yeah - just this once maybe you do . ❞ she teases , smile growing . it’s been a short while since she’s seen him , but it isn’t a bad thing . ❝ it’s good to see you bruce . ❞

❝ in new york, good coffee shops are a dime a dozen. truly. ❞ there are plenty of ‘ good places ‘, each with its own vibe and charm. ❝ i guess it depends on what you’re looking for: quiet or bustling ? small or chain shop ? cheap or expensive ? my favourite is the one two blocks from here. it’s decently priced and small but not so much that you feel CRAMPED with everyone else. ❞
❝ just something . . . good . and not a chain . ❞ she offers in response . ❝ and honestly any place you have to recommend has to be better than the places i’ve gone to so far . i’m starting to think coffee in this dimension is nothing more than glorified sludge . you up for a coffee now then ? ❞

“ all of it ? no , but seriously — imagine finding yourself suddenly ten years in the future & your twin sister’s now a witch . ” pietro exhales heavily . “ don’t even know which part i want to unpack first . probably the future part , but nobody seems to have answers for that . ”
❝ can’t do much about the future part but . . . like , an actual witch or what ? ❞ barbara replies , taking a second to process . she’s come across magic before , mainly in the form of the zataras , but even then she wouldn’t really call witches . ❝ that would be what i’d focus on , if the ten year thing isn’t answerable . what’d she have to say about all that ? ❞
