Ohh, wow, my apologies, it's been a long time since I last heard the commentary around this test, I must have mis-remembered something fierce. Thanks for the correction!!

You know what scene I really like but have a hard time talking about? The one where Santa Claus finds Jack Skellington in that graveyard and chokes him with his cane.

…No. Seriously.

I’ve had it in my mind for the longest time now, ever since I watched this “deleted scene” ages ago. The D23 Event celebrating Nightmare’s 25th anniversary surfaced these memories when they brought up a certain storyboard depicting this EXACT test, as seen above.

This is pretty different than what we got in the actual movie. Santa shows how upset he is in TNBC and his initial annoyance with Jack, but I never thought he’d go to the extent of grabbing him by the neck with his cane. This is a pretty interesting side of him to see - especially of the design used in this test. The exaggeration of his eyebrows and the mannerisms cry Rankin/Bass Special vibes. There’s even a close-up picture of Santa’s figure:

Take what you will, but I like this deleted scene. The way Zero is animated and interacts with Jack, followed by the noises and sounds, feel really cartooninish, and how he’s used as a tissue is a callback to the original poem written by Tim Burton. It matches the “tv special” vibe Burton first went with Nightmare; it’s pretty similar to the old stop-motion Christmas specials. Sure, Jack’s voice is different and his suit looks completely black(again, a little callback because Jack’s original design had no stripes), but it’s a really neat look to see what has changed.

That's not a deleted scene but an early screen test -- with Danny Elfman providing the speaking voice! You're so right about all your observations, and it's cool to see how strongly they changed the music and atmosphere from this test. I think the most interesting thing about this is why Danny Elfman did not provide Jack's speaking voice going forward along with his singing voice. Does he feel like a different character?
