honestly I should probably stop blogging about dungeon meshi at all, since that one comic of mine got fairly popular it's only a matter of time before the fandom decides to turn on me

literally just saw a post like "anime-onlies are only shipping labru because they haven't met Mithrun yet" shut uuuuuuuuuuuuup
it's gonna be so annoying when we get to Mithrun & Kabru's Bogus Journey in the anime, because both kabumisu and labru are very good ships with lots of potential and just because I happen to like one more doesn't mean I think the other is invalid for whatever reason. But I just know that once we start really getting into stuff people are gonna Pick A Side and there's gonna be all kinds of fucking rants about how kabumisu is problematic or only idiots ship labru because kabru clearly hates him, like! you're allowed to like or dislike a ship without having to justify it! but noooooo I bet you anything it's gonna be fuckshit all the way down.

It’s pretty well known that many English words meaning “bad” or “evil” ultimately trace back to the English-speaking world’s obsession with social class. “Villain”, for example, was originally just another word for peasant, and even the word “mean” simply meant “commonplace” before it picked up its connotations of brutishness and nastiness by association with, well, commoners.
Today, however, I learned one that maybe isn’t so well-known: apparently, the word “lewd” originally meant “not a priest”.
Like… I can see how you’d get from that original meaning to the one we have today, from an etymological standpoint, but it still raises several questions!

As in planet-hopping sci fi, one of the essential tools for cultivating a sense of wonder in fantasy RPG settings is the inclusion of Big Dumb Objects that aren’t there to justify any particular adventure premise and which the setting’s worldbuilding aggressively refuses to explain. Like, the campaign’s main city has a biologically impossible thousand-meter-tall tree growing in the middle of it. Why does it exist? Characters in the setting may have their theories, but its origins never become an actual plot point. There may be adventures that take place on the tree, but they’re never about the tree. It’s just there.

somebody suggested in the notes of this comic that Kabru reads the novels Marcille is obsessed with to learn how to talk to her too, and I propose to you an alternative: Kabru has already read the Daltian Clan novels. And he fucking hated them. He thinks they're melodramatic schlock more concerned with shock value and keeping the paychecks rolling in than telling a cohesive story.
He was pretty into the first few since he started reading in the throes of puberty, but by volume ten he'd gotten frustrated at the lack of progress and started to notice flaws in the writing. He only finished the whole thing out of spite so people (mostly elves) would stop saying to him "how can you criticize it when you haven't even read all of it?"
When he learns Marcille is a fan he already knows her well enough to be like "of course you do, you're Marcille, you love melodramatic schlock," and tries to brush it off as something he read casually. It's only when someone points out that they take a solid four or five years to get through even for a fast reader, and that would have been almost a quarter of Kabru's life at this point, that Marcille realizes he can't have spent that much time on something and not have strong feelings about it.
Luckily by this time having catty arguments about things that don't matter is their Best Friend Love Language so it's just something else to bond over.

punk isn’t just skinny. punk isn’t just perfect mohawks or aesthetically pleasing jackets. punk isn’t only listening to dead kennedys or black flag. punk is being an individual, having no respect for our fascist authority, sticking up for the little guy even if you are the little guy. punk isn’t just a look or a music scene.

I love griffin mcelroy because he says things like “our capacity for love increases with each person we cross paths with throughout our lives and with each moment we spend with those people” but he also says things like “my name is sprite pepsi and I’m abstinence til I die”

I guess where a lot of modern AU versions of Link and Zelda fall short for me is, like, okay, Link is a feral elf, but he also saves the world by solving logic puzzles. It’s totally valid for modern!Link to be some sort of forest-dwelling survivalist weirdo, but it’s equally valid for him to be That Guy who built a working 3D printer out of plywood and string and you’re pretty sure he coded his smartphone’s operating system himself. Modern!Link would absolutely have a YouTube channel where he test-fires potato guns that violate the Geneva Conventions, is what I mean to say.
(The equivalent modern!Zelda, meanwhile, would probably run a video blog where she posts largely uncommentated demonstrations of practical home synthesis of chemical compounds whose names you cannot pronounce but which can set concrete on fire. Sometimes she lets Link field-test her latest creations. She is on so many watchlists.)

okay I haven't seen anyone point it out yet and since they cut one or two lines from the manga maybe it wasn't as obvious, but Laios cooked those harpy egg omelettes for Kabru himself. We've only seen him (attempt) to cook one other thing in the entire series before this, but he didn't ask Senshi to do it, or if they had any leftovers. No, he wanted to cook for Kabru All By Himself.
