Colouring Done - Seeing Red 6 Update 3
I just remembered I also have to highlight this thing. Blahhhhhhh :,)
Tumblr media
Since calling the lineart done I've made a large amount of tweaks to it, notably adding a couple extra frames to the final ease, moving one frame up and left quite a bit, and other tweaks I don't remember. I also had to separate the wings and the body into layers because that black on black would've otherwise been bad
Doing this was arguably more obnoxious than the lineart, there's so many separate colour bodies and so much precise colour linework that's just tedious to work with. I think it came out pretty darn cool though. Again the more I look at it the worse it gets but that's probably just me.
At least I learned that CSP can do responsive outlines which is pretty boss and worked real well for workshopping the layers of this

Lineart done - Seeing Red 6 Update 2
I got a bit worried for a while because it seemed like the animation looked better at 15fps once the inbetweened. Seeing it done now, I don't actually think this is the case and 24fps is the proper timing:
Tumblr media
But for the lols, I exported it at 15 too. This version gives you a better view of all the little details and moving parts, though it's not really a natural timing:
Tumblr media
Clip Studio Paint EX, of course.
I could nitpick this forever, but for the most part I'm pretty darn happy with it. I feel like for once I achieved natural tail followthrough, in a circular motion no less, and the easing on the wings is pretty good. I probably could have pushed the hair followthrough a bit more, but this was my first time animating this character and I wasn't sure how rigid the hair should be.
In the past I used just one additional inbetween at the end of a motion to give it a bit of an ease, but here I've stretched that out to three, which did achieve that nice ease I had in mind. Perhaps it could even benefit from a couple more?
This isn't the end of the lining stage, I need to add some colour details through vector layers as well. I also omitted some of the finer details while getting the main motion down, which I'll add back in next. There's also a couple frames where the tail still clips through the coat or other parts so I could more easily track it, that'll definitely get knocked out too. The more I look at this the more upset I am at the hair so I think I'll go back and tweak a few frames near the end for that too.
Coming along nicely!

New part time - Seeing Red 6 Update 1
Haven't had a good opportunity to yap about a part here in a while, so i'mma blab a bit about my half of this collab part. This stems from a desire to fbf animate something at true 24fps where I'm not time crunched and can work on it when I feel like it, and also because Kamaitachi is cool as balls and I really want to animate them being cool as balls.
Something unique (probably?) I do when animating fbf is I very rarely rough out every single frame. My style of clean, thick lines works much better if I refer to other finished frames when inbetweening, rather than drawing over a sketch and making tons of corrections later. Hence, this sketch, 12fps, TVPaint.
Tumblr media
There will be numerous frames added to the end to give the movement a nice ease (been wanting to experiment with this for a while, I have a vision and will try whatever I can to execute it), but because those frames will be so similar to the last sketched frame, it's also useless to sketch those since I'll simply copy the lined vectors and nudge them around to the final placement. This is how I make small movements with clean thick lines look stable / not wobbly.
So far I see one thing I'll change upon line stage, and that's the tail popping a tad on the last sketched frame.

Barely Late ArtFight Mass Revenge
I fully intended to have this posted at 11:59 right before the fight ended, but I got totally screwed by the file being too large and I ended up missing the submission window by what must have been no more than five seconds. I'm absolutely crushed, but that's no reason to withhold these revenges I've done for twelve different people for an entire eleven months.
I decided to do something a bit different this year: instead of digital headshots, I went with traditional, which naturally ended up evolving into fullbodies on its own. Had it successfully submitted it would have been worth 240 points towards Team Vampire, but alas.
Tumblr media
I’m DMing this post to each of the revenge recipients. Details (from left to right) and what I would’ve written in the post body below the cut.
ShippyFishy // Mr. Capgras - I love the pile of neuroscience in this dude’s ToyHouse bio, what a great concept! I got his colour sequence slightly wrong, but sadly there’s no ctrl-z in traditional ahah
Ragpie // Ash the Hyena - Your designs are so fun despite my having a hard time with them! The colouring’s a bit off but I hope you enjoy regardless.
ArtisticDingo // Cat-Cus (Cat Cactus) - I would have this thing in my house tbh
RadiantzRain // Paige - Thanks for your interest in my characters! Your designs were a bit difficult for me but I’m glad I had the opportunity to use my neon sharpies!
M0LT3NS0LAR1X // Magmyna - I also love fire themed characters, hope i did this one justice!
Sir_Artiax // Shadowstalker - Fun fact, one of my dragon characters used to share their name with this guy! I didn’t have enough shades of gray to accurately portray this design, but I’m happy with how it turned out regardless.
ArtieMason // Queen Blue - I enjoy the lore behind your characters! This one greatly suffered from me not having the right colours, I tried to touch it up a bit in post.
SumpfDOG // Sumpfii-Dogbb - I’m honoured to be one of your first ever ArtFight targets! I hope you like my rendition of your doggo.
Taneon // Hallowmile - Our yearly battle continues! As usual I love your designs to bits. I totally messed up her tail but I tried to correct it in post.
Motz // Demeter - I tried my best to capture this character’s confident personality in their pose. I didn’t have enough shades of tan so I improvised the design a bit, hope you enjoy regardless!
3stherlvo3scats // 05/ “All or none shall perish - I adore characters with themes of duality and those who result from experiments! If I had more time I would’ve done a scene with both Blossom and Decay.
Seathea // Atrax - Hope I got this character’s personality right! The wing pattern was difficult with traditional but I’m glad it came out alright.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR ATTACKING ME! You can download the file in full quality here. I’ll soon upload it to ToyHouse and attempt to tag all the relevant characters I can find, please reach out if you want it added and the profile isn’t readily available. Please let me know if you have any questions / requests regarding this attack :)

Finished! - Na Na Na 24 Update 10
youtube
youtube
I'm actually shocked this part came out so good. It took just shy of a month nonstop (not counting the year old stuff) and so much was put into it, to yield a pretty great outcome worthy of the best of EidolonEntropy playlist. Couldn't ask for a better production cycle.
In addition to documenting the process here, I also recorded the entire production pipeline of the final shot and have whipped up a timelapse video with tips and tricks incorporated throughout. Check it out:
youtube
There's one aspect of that process that couldn't make it into that video due to my computer being incapable of recording it without crashing - the production of Vergil's frostbreath effect. Unlike typical fire breath, which you can typically find free flamethrower stock footage for and make that work, frostbreath is an entirely fictional thing so we have to get a bit creative with it.
I used much of the same stuff I used for Frozen Heart 14, when Winter blows frostbreath on Foeslayer's restraints, but did it a lot Better because then I was working on an even less powerful computer that crashed every time I tried to render those effects.
Using Continuum Particle Illusion, a sweet little particle effect generator bundled in with BCC effect packages, I made a stream of particles that sorta resembled misty ice. The project file itself is a bit jank and hacky because it's not easy to intuit what many of the parameters do, and I couldn't figure out how to retime the effect emitter, so I ended up doing that in post. The result came out pretty convincing I think:
Rendered out in an alpha supporting .mov container, and with a blend mode and a couple glow effects applied, it's easily on par with the flamethrower asset used for Dante. Another different Particle Illusion file later and we have a neat clash animation that isn't terrible. Can we all agree I've redeemed myself after fumbling with this exact same thing in the Miser Bros. MAP end card?
And with that we close out the first saga of the Behind The Scenes Animations with B series! can't believe anyone actually bothered to read this that's pretty pog

It's being recorded now - Na Na Na 24 Update 9
The first half of this part is done, and I'm saving the result for the final release because A) hype B) Tumblr will take every opportunity to nuke it to the point it's unwatchable because of the rain effects, I think. That being said, I'm moving on to the last shot, and I'm experimenting with the idea of doing a timelapse video of the process for it.
Here's the refined sketch of the shot - it's about time, it's been over a year since I touched the bulk of it. It took a long time to get everything looking right, but hopefully that means less tweaking will be required when I take it to the lineart stage. TVPaint 24fps
I noticed something when doing this that's been vaguely in the back of my mind but not quite important enough to make it to the front and get acted on: with this style, the snouts don't come down to a singular point like my normal style, the lines instead go to the vertices in the mouth. This makes for an easier front view and less weird quarter views, so it's greatly preferable for shots like this. Unfortunately I completely ignored this when doing the other shots, which were mostly side view or moving too fast to justify thinking hard about it, so that's going to be a slight discrepancy between both halves of this. Oh well.

augh dude does Tumblr really crunch videos that badly? guess I really should've held off on the rain effects lmao. I might mute them for future updates, unless Tumblr's just lying and the quality improves after it gets some time to process

I Don't Know What I'm Doing - Na Na Na 24 Update 8
...but it appears to be working out anyway, so yippee ig
Usually, as you should, I'd wait to do stuff like rain effects until all assets are finished, but I said Lol No and did them now because I Felt Like It. The last time I did rain effects was Not Evil 16, almost four years ago, and not much has changed here except this time around I tried a new trick for puddles. It's working so far, but there's a clear discrepancy between the size/density of the raindrops during the splitscreen shot that will need to be addressed.
There's one big problem these new effects are exemplifying: the incorrect movement in the background of the Dante running shot. Whereas it could be shrugged off beforehand since the background wasn't too distinct, it's now glaringly obvious it's not aligned with Dante's footsteps, and frankly I have no idea what I need to do on a technical level to fix it. I'm thinking I might have to mock up the shot with some figurines and shoot a video for reference, and then try to follow that to the best of my ability in the Moho rig.
Progress on this will probably slow to a halt over the next 3-5 days, but I might put out one more update before then.

It's battalia time - Na Na Na 24 Update 7
WOO got most of the middle shot done today:
And with that, another notable distinction from Plagues 15 arises: then, I made a point to use as little shortcuts as possible; now, I'm going ham with them. The only thing actually hand animated in Dante's run cycle is his legs, the rest is puppetted, but the pieces blend seamlessly because I'm using the same frame rate on both.
I colorized both dragons based on the same method, but somewhere between the programs Vergil got bluer than Dante; I'll have to fix that.
Everything for this part I've done so far I've worried it won't look good in the end, and I'm delighted to say I've proven myself wrong thus far. I'm also shocked at how quickly I'm finishing this, if I manage my program integration properly for the last shot I could finish it in a week or so.
