Now requires an asbestos survey be done before beginning any renovation, demolition or any other disruption of materials in a building build prior to 1990. Why? ... Because more than 2000 building materials used prior to 1990 contained asbestos. Asbestos has been proven to cause diseases including mesothelioma and asbestosis. In short, exposure to asbestos can cause death and is the #1 killer of workers in BC. According to CMHC and Health Canada: Asbestos poses health risks only when fibres are in the air that people breathe. Asbestos fibres lodge in the lungs, causing scarring that can ultimately lead to severely impaired lung function (asbestosis) and cancers of the lungs or lung cavity. Homes and apartments built before 1990 often are filled with asbestos containing materials, needing only normal wear and tear with age to dislodge the fibers and send them airborne. Asbestos is not harmful if it's securely sealed within these materials, but if disturbed through wear and tear over the years or renovations it can become a serious danger. Search asbestos on Google and you'll find out just how harmful it can be. We all wish we didn't have to be bothered by this inconvenience ... but just stop and think for a moment and realize that this needs to be done. It's really not that difficult to deal with.
