"The Winchesters" is fanfic (complimentary)

So when I heard that Jensen Ackles had tacked his "Dean busts out of heaven" fic on the end of "The Winchesters," I decided I had to give it a try. The CW isn't doing reruns, so I went to CW.com and marathoned the season there. 

It's ALL fanfic.

Literally the entire show is Dean Winchester traveling to an alternate dimension where he adjusts events enough to give John and Mary the chance to be a functional couple. He makes it so John and Mary run into each other early enough that he knows she's a hunter, which means she's not hiding a big chunk of her life, and he experiences hunting without the haze of pain and grief. John gets to find out his Dad was a man of letters, and actually talk about fighting and loss with Mary instead of hiding it from her. Mary gets the chance to deal with SO MUCH of her own trauma.

Beyond that, the show is structured like fanfic. Characters are allowed to acknowledge their trauma and process it in a healthy manner. One of the characters is a bisexual man (acknowledged as such by the show) who is also a former vet and portrays a fairly complex view of masculinity (that John is now exposed to and learns from). There's a scene that indirectly interrogates the validity of John's reaction to Mary's death and how he had a ton of issues he hadn't dealt with. The entire show pays more careful attention to Supernatural lore than Supernatural itself ever did. Characterization is consistent enough that several common fan metas I've read online over the years hold up beautifully. People actually care about the the demon hosts and try to keep them alive.

Basically, Dean Winchester and Jensen Ackles called their good friend Robbie Thompson and said "We want to make a 13-episode fanfic where 'Supernatural' is well-written," and Thompson signed on immediately. Pure insanity. 10 out of 10 stars. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch this thing on CW.com so Jensen knows we appreciate the sheer lunacy of it
