🎨✨ Remembering the legendary Louisiana folk artist Clementine Hunter, who passed away on January 1, 1988, at the remarkable age of 102.
Born on a plantation said to have inspired Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Clementine was the granddaughter of a slave, a farm worker, and completely self-taught—never learning to read or write.
In her mid-50s, using leftover brushes from visiting artists at Melrose Plantation, she began painting scenes from everyday life in the Cane River region. Her art beautifully captured the rhythm and reality of plantation life in the early 20th century.
She once sold her paintings for just 25 cents… but by the end of her life, her work was shown in museums and galleries around the world and sold for thousands. 🖼️🌍
In 1986, she received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Northwestern State University—an incredible recognition for a woman who painted history with heart.
Today, her art can sell for hundreds of thousands, and her legacy is priceless.

Simone Johnson's whimsical and imaginative art primarily depicts New York bodega cats surrounded by colorful depictions of deli products, usually around a theme like Thanksgiving, Italian food, or classic Goya products.

"Stripped of their initial value, secondhand consumable goods of all kinds provide opportunities for a broader scope of individuals to engage in the rarified practices of art production. Recombined into new structures, these objects achieve a novel kind of value, even if it exists, outside of the preoccupations of the market." Freya Gowrley, Fragmentary Forms: A New History of Collage

Just outside of Myrtle Beach, SC lies the small, historic community of Ketchup Town. Established in the 1920s, this quaint crossroads served as a vital hub for local farmers. The intriguing name "Ketchup Town" originates from the colloquial practice of farmers "catching up" with one another at this central spot, sharing news, stories, and camaraderie. The Ketchup Town General Store, built in 1927, quickly became the lifeblood of the community. Offering groceries, hardware, and other essential goods, the store also functioned as a social hub and the local post office, cementing its status as the heart of Ketchup Town.

"What people don't realize is how much religion costs. They think faith is a big electric blanket, when of course it is the cross...Keep an open mind. Keep it open toward faith, keep wanting it, keep asking for it, and leave the rest to God." - Flannery O'Connor
