Samira's direct honesty is something I find so fascinating about her as a character. She's the most empathetic doctor in the department, but she really isn't soft in the way one would typically expect of a character like that.
She asks Santos how thick her skin is, then provides blunt, direct feedback without being concerned about how to say it "nicely". When her patient with the butt injections from a guy on Tik Tok asks how bad it looks, she admits freely and without hedging that it doesn’t look great. She gets deeply offended at the claim she’s lying: both Whitaker and Pugliesi accuse her of it, and she points out to both of them that what she said was totally true – she gave him a morphine-like drug that binds to the same receptor to treat his symptoms. But most interestingly is the way it manifests in her relationship with Robby.
She tells Dana directly that just because Robby's having a bad day, there's no need to take it out on her. She defends her treatment choices, even when Robby is getting mad about them. The one time we see her not being vocal about something she knows? When Robby's working on Leah.
We see Samira initially helping there. But then after she puts in the IO, the next time we see her, she's working with Abbot on a different patient. The time after that, she goes to help Langdon. And when Langdon asks how Robby's doing with Leah, she doesn't answer out loud and instead shakes her head. She knew full well Leah wasn't going to make it. And later, she goes back to Robby's side and asks if there's anything she can do, more softly than we ever heard her say anything else, still not telling him that she thinks he should give up and go help someone he could still save. Robby is in so many ways the exception in terms of Samira's reactions to things.
It's such a cool example that highlights the differences between them. I'm usually more focused on the ways in which they're the same, but there are also these crucial differences. In the cases where we see Robby doing the "unnecessary tests" and spending too much time that he berated Samira for, he's often more motivated by the families than the patients due to his own Adamson trauma, whereas Samira is patient focused – wanting Joyce to feel safe and comfortable when she's terrified of intubation, trusting Nandi when she's scared her symptoms are being dismissed – and less concerned with the families. Her exception is Pugliesi, who is in some ways to her what Joyce was to Robby – she is absolutely, legitimately concerned about doing no harm and treating his symptoms. However, she's also reacting very strongly due to her own personal experiences losing her father and visceral reaction to the idea of someone rejecting help.
Robby's reaction to Joyce feels so similar – in contrast to so many other patients, he's not talking to her wife and trying to make her feel better. He's angry at the thought of any delay, driven by the idea that maybe they could have saved Adamson if they'd moved faster.
They're just so similar, but they're approaching their work through very different traumas, and it's all so fascinating.

I AM YELLING RIGHT NOW. This is it, this is where I stand. My view on the Jedi is the same as I have for Bail and Mon and Padme. That they weren't perfect, that for all my defense of them and pointing out why they would make any given choice they did and that it was reasonable, understandable, and empathetic, that no one's hands were perfectly clean. They couldn't be, not in the situation designed to drag them all down into the dirt. But that doesn't mean they weren't good. That they didn't live their lives striving not to abuse the abilities they held. That they worked damned hard to help people, they died to help people, and they deserve justice... or at least a decent funeral. The galaxy is poorer without them in it. They were good and they were ordinary and they were fallible and their traditions were honorable and they were all trying to live up to them. The Jedi don't have to be perfect to be our heroes and I think that's true of every single heroic character in this franchise, from Luke Skywalker to Mon Mothma to Bail Organa to Padme Amidala to Leia Organa to Ezra Bridger to Cassian Andor to Ahsoka Tano to every Jedi in the Jedi Order. They were good and they didn't deserve to die just because an old man knew they wouldn't stand for his tyranny. (Star Wars: Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear | Alexander Freed)

listen LISTEN part of what makes hiccup and astrid so interesting as a couple is that astrid is always running towards her duty while hiccup is always running away from his. from the moment we first see her, astrid is 100% devoted to protecting berk, whatever that may mean in any context, and she will be the greatest at it. whether that's slaying dragons, becoming a dragon rider, joining the berk guard, hell even the way she follows hiccup and is the first to believe him is rooted in her unshakable sense of duty, honor, and loyalty to her people and to her island. she's the exact kind of warrior that berk needs at any given time and yet she isn't ever fully recognized for it because that's what's expected of her so naturally being the best at it deserves recognition, but is not revolutionary. meanwhile hiccup is always running towards the next thing. he's spent his whole life rejected and on the outskirts because he couldn't fit the ideal that berk had for him. but then he became a hero overnight, and suddenly everyone follows him. there are some places where he has more authority than even stoick does, and for a boy who spent his whole life rejected by everything, that's terrifying. so when he's not leading the dragon riders, he runs. he lives in his own world. he rejects becoming chief and living out the viking ideal, because why would he want to become the very thing that hurt him. hiccup is driven and loyal yes, but until the end of httyd 2, he's not even close to driven by his duty to berk. astrid is always pushing hiccup towards what fate tells him to be, and even though she supports him through his dreams, it's clear where she thinks his priorities should lie. and hiccup supports astrid in becoming the warrior she wants to become and that she's meant to be, but there's a part of him that tries to pull her away from it. and then on top of that they are above all else loyal to each other, the other dragon riders, and their dragons. it's insane.

man i wish that the apothecary diaries wasn't marketed to me as a romance because if i knew it was more of a historical mystery that primarily focuses on the stories of women not just in the rear palace but of that era in general and that most of it is about maomao solving national (and international!) level security issues and then following it up with "but that's only a guess and it's not my problem" i would've picked it up so much faster

luke skywalker interacting with the ghost crew is like. he's trying to rebuild the jedi order and the remains of the ghost crew are some of the only people around to know jedi and their philosophy so closely (even if it is secondhand) so he likely can't help but turn to hera or zeb or sabine or even chopper as a source of information. luke seeks them out and wonders if the legendary kanan jarrus and ezra bridger he's heard about also struggled the way he is. did they have to go it alone, how did they cope, how did they live, how did they sacrifice themselves so willingly? is it normal for a jedi to want to die so easily and is that part of it all? how did they uphold the ways of the jedi when they also had to shoulder the weight of the galaxy? luke looks at these people and they're probably some of the only ones to see him so scared and confused and as a 20 year old and not only as the galaxy's greatest hope. and yet when they speak to him, it's hard to even look him in the eyes because they keep seeing those that they've lost. they love him and maybe even depise him a little. he is both their greatest hope and greatest reminder of their loss

luke skywalker in the context of andor is sooooo. smiley insane overpowered teenager from the middle of fucking nowhere shows up at the eleventh hour No credentials No connections No resumé just happened to somehow rescue alderaanian senator leia organa from the death star with an absolutely braindead gambit in which he just. pretended to be a stormtrooper, with a wookiee in tow. then he gets in an X-wing for the first time ever, turns off the targeting computer, and blows up the greatest weapon the empire has ever created with one fuckoff impossible shot. meanwhile all these rebels who have spent years, their entire lives, existing in fear and deprivation and exile, painstakingly building this movement with their bare hands, paying in blood and sweat and tears, so far removed from the world of the jedi that the knights and the force are just stories now, to most of them -- these brave exhausted souls who know that no one person can stand against the empire, that it takes community, it takes trust, it takes you and the guy standing next to you -- find themselves watching essentially the rebirth of a mythological protector, in the form of a guy who's probably not legally old enough to drink, who sulks like a teenager whenever notorious smuggler han solo doesn't pay attention to him, who follows biggs around like a puppy, who falls for literally every prank anyone ever plays on him. and this idiot kid is the first person in a generation who can stand up to the empire, all alone, and make a difference. how much must they hate him and how much must they love him and how much must they fear losing him.

on another note i do think it's interesting to think about bakugou and jirou becoming closer friends in 2nd year because their circumstances are quite similar. they both have to take the time to slow down and relearn something about how to use their quirk in the face of disability/chronic pain/etc, which is something most others in the class are not slowed down by (for pretty much every other student character, the war resulted in them getting catapulted forwards in skill, while characters like bakugou, jirou, and midoriya are thrown somewhat "backwards" for lack of a better term. the only other characters we see with such clear injury from the war related to how they'd use their quirks/go about being heroes are hawks, aizawa, and mirko who are pro heroes). they're both forced to pause their training and turn back towards the beginning and restart, and i think that'd create a mutual understanding that most others in the class don't have with each other, not even their closest friends (except probably midoriya).
bakugou and jirou being friends from ages 5-11 because they took music lessons at the same place is real to me okay. and then they forgot about each other's existence and when they start at ua they think the other looks vaguely familiar but they don't realize how they knew each other before ua until second year and they both end up realizing after they're left with too much time to think while they're recovering from their injuries after the war
