The Christmas season is upon us with all the festive gatherings, gifts and feasts. If I’m honest Christmas has become one of my least favourite times of the year. I know that probably sounds ungrateful because I am grateful for the birth of my Saviour and the loved ones in my life. But recently Christmas has begun to remind me of everything if my life that has not turned out as I had hoped. Sometimes this season brings out a sadness and longing for more connection and community that pervades my soul. This year, though most of my circumstances are unchanged I decided to be thankful for what I do have. Cliche as it sounds it has made a difference. It’s easy to think that if you just achieved whatever goal or dream you have in life be it relational or career related or whatever that you will be satisfied but I’ve realised its simply not true. I just read a blog by an amazing woman who lost her husband last year before Christmas and was left a devastated widow with two children and I watched a new mother at the supermarket breakdown as she struggled to shop and calm her crying baby. I have beautiful friends that long to be married and find their soul mates. No one has a perfect life (even if we don’t show others), I think we’re all trying to do our best to figure things out and it’s sobering to realise that the grass is definitely not greener on the other side of the festive fence but just different! I have realised that nothing or no one truly satisfies like Jesus. While I am thankful for Him humbling Himself to come as a baby I am more thankful that He is now our friend, husband, father, comforter and lifter of our heads. This Christmas has actually surprised me and has been one of the best so far because I ran into His arms and found His love is better than life. Whatever life situation you find yourself in I pray you find what you need in Him too. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
