Deathconsciousness: The collapse of the human spirit
Deathconsciousness is the critically acclaimed debut project by the reclusive duo known as Have A Nice Life. It explores the themes of nihilism, and questioning religion and life. The vinyl edition of the album is provided with a 75-page booklet exploring the dark and inexplicable history of the Antiochean cult. The project was produced in the course of five years (2002-2007), and is regarded as somewhat of a genre-bending masterpiece.
The project seems to be immensely inspired by Jimi Hendrix, my bloody valentine and The Microphone's Phil Elverum. It blends the sounds of shoegaze, noise-rock, acoustic rock, and death metal, creating a melancholic and suffocating, yet pleasant ambiance. What makes this project so special to me is the enigmatic aesthetic of it. Albeit it's underground success, no one has ever actually came close to understanding the significance or the general narrative of the album.
My personal favorite track from the project is Earthmover, the closer. The track is about 12 minutes long, and talks about a fictional story of golems made out of dirt and sand who were sent by an unknown higher-being to destroy all life on earth. They are brutal killing machines that serve no real purpose other than to destroy, and there is only so much to dismantle, thereupon they grow tired of their senseless existence. The main singer of the band, Dan Barrett exclaims that if these golems could talk, only these words would come out of their mouths:
"We wish we were dead"
The track then combusts into a belligerent guitar conveying tempestuous emotion for the last 5 minutes of the track, leaving the listener alone with their thoughts to interoperate their own conclusion.
