Let’s take a look at some of the key arguments for each option. Electric vs. Gas Patio Heaters - Which should I choose? (bromic.com)

youtube
What to Consider
Power Source
Most patio heaters are either gas-powered (propane or natural) or electric. Both types emit infrared energy. Unlike a space heater, which blows air across a hot electric coil to warm the air, a patio heater projects an infrared beam that travels through the air without heating it. When the infrared energy strikes a solid object like a person or furnishings, the beam converts to heat.
Propane
A propane patio heater is more portable, and oftentimes comes with a wheeled base so you to easily move around your deck or patio depending on the wind or seating situation. Gas is also typically cheaper than electric, so the overall cost to run is typically less.
Unfortunately, the flame of a gas patio heater can be blown out by the wind, meaning you’ll have to restart everything to keep the heat going. These types of heaters also require more regular cleaning, because bugs and debris may affect the burner and burner screen. You also have to get the propane tanks refilled if they run out.
Natural Gas
Natural gas patio heaters are essentially the same as propane gas models, but they are less expensive to operate, and don’t require refills since gas is piped into it (similar to a home furnace). But like other patio heaters, keeping the appliance in a fixed location may affect the heating capability.
Electric
Since electric power heaters don’t require propane or a flame to run, then they can’t be blown out by the gusts of wind, and are generally the most convenient to use. They also don’t require a lot of maintenance, besides clearing off pesky cobwebs or bug webs in the off season. A permanently installed structure could potentially contribute to resale value, too. However, you’d likely be faced with permit requirements, and eating the cost of electrical work by a professional if anything goes awry.
Electric models can also be more expensive to operate, and keeping the heater in a fixed location might not be the most ideal for the seating arrangement.
Pellet
Pellet patio heaters aren’t the most commonly used, but they may be ideal depending on your exact needs. These models use compressed wood as their fuel source, and have a combustion chamber where the pellets are burned to produce heat. Pellet heaters are generally a more sustainable and eco-friendly option, because they use a renewable fuel source and release fewer emissions.
They also efficiently produce heat with less waste, and pellets are often cheaper and more consistent in price. However, you’ll have to have a supply of pellets on hand, and access to a reliable power source to operate the ignition system.
Heat Output
One of the most important factors to consider is how much heat you’ll get from your patio heater. The output is measured in BTUs. To put it simply, the more BTUs you have heading at you, the warmer you feel. A decent-sized patio heater usually produces between 30,000 and 50,000 BTUs per hour. Several models on our list emit over 40,000 BTUs, making them ideal options for keeping larger yards and outdoor spaces warm.
It’s important to remember that depending on whether the appliance is gas or electric, then the heat output and longevity varies. Gas patio heaters might not last as long, but they generate more heat. Electric patio heaters typically have a longer lifespan, and might be a more energy-efficient choice. If you plan to spend several hours outside, opt for an electric model. If you’re just heading to the backyard for a quick hang out, then a gas heater might be the way to go.
Range
To get the best performance out of your patio heater, think about its BTU rating in relation to the size of your outdoor space, as well as the climate. If you live in an area with bone-chilling temperatures, you might benefit from an appliance that has a high BTU output and a wide coverage area, or invest in multiple units. If you’re just trying to keep things reasonably toasty on your patio, then a model with mid-range coverage can suffice.

Pergola Cover Ideas For Outdoor Kitchen, Backyard & Living Space
So, whether you're looking to weatherproof your garden bar ideas or ensure an outdoor kitchen adds value to your home, we've rounded up the best covered outdoor kitchen ideas with expert tips to help us along the way. 11 covered outdoor kitchen ideas for sheltered cooking and dining | Ideal Home
Experimenting with covered outdoor kitchen ideas can transform your outdoor living space into a hub for alfresco dining. There are countless outdoor kitchen ideas for every garden, big or small, but there's also plenty of room for creativity if you want to enclose your dining area and protect it from the elements.
Invest in a pergola
The heat from the sun can get quite intense, especially when cooking outdoors, so installing an outdoor pergola to provide shade for an outdoor kitchen is an easy way of preventing the heat from becoming too uncomfortable. Luckily, there are plenty of pergola ideas to draw inspiration from.
While an open-style pergola won’t provide full protection from rain, having panels or fencing on two (or three) sides will help shield the area from wind and draughts.
Think about ventilation
When building an outdoor kitchen, providing adequate ventilation for gas, wood or charcoal-burning appliances in sheltered spaces is an essential safety requirement, and helps make the space more comfortable to spend time in, too.
'One effective method is the installation of outdoor-rated range hoods above grills and cooking areas, which are excellent at venting smoke and odours,' says Sam from Tiger. 'Ceiling fans can also be installed to help circulate air and disperse smoke, enhancing the comfort of the area.
'Designing the kitchen with open sides allows for natural airflow and ventilation, while incorporating vents into the roof structure helps hot air escape, improving air circulation.
'Pergolas, with their open-sided design, naturally promote good ventilation and can be an excellent choice for an outdoor kitchen. Additionally, adjustable louvred panels can be used in walls or roofs to control airflow and provide ventilation as needed.'
Bear in mind that metal flues get extremely hot, so always position them so they're not touching wooden structures, and make sure they're away from overhead greenery so they aren’t a fire hazard. Knowing how to plan an outdoor kitchen is the key to success.
Get tough with work surfaces
Whether sheltered or open to the elements, with any outdoor kitchen it’s the worktops that bear the brunt of the weather, from direct sunlight and rain to frost and even snow. So it’s essential to choose outdoor countertop ideas which are weather-resistant, hardwearing and durable.
Natural materials like stone and quartz are tough and impervious to the weather, and opting for an integrated outdoor sink and worktop in the same material will ensure a seamless finish and prevent dirt from accumulating in joins.
Concrete worktops are also notoriously tough, so they're good for the outdoors, while stainless steel is robust and won’t rust in wet weather. Easy-clean materials that won’t stain or mark with greasy barbecue food are a must, too.
Opt for an outdoor cooking hut
Once buying an outdoor kitchen is out of the way, try dedicating a spot for cooking and entertaining with a purpose-built hut that can be set up as a bolt-hole further away from the house and enjoyed all season round.
A fabulous focal point for a garden, the hut is built around an outdoor oven that incorporates an insulated flue system and chimney which will help keep the hut warm and cosy, too. Interior shelves provide prep space for the chef, while exterior side shelves provide extra surface space for guests to sit and get in on the action. It's also a great way of making an outdoor kitchen look more expensive.
Try an easy-up shelter
For a less-permanent option, try a metal-framed shelter that will provide direct coverage for the best BBQ and grill area so that rain doesn’t stop play.
The Kettler BBQ Panalsol from Robert Dyas has a powder-coated aluminium frame that stays rust-free when left outside. It also has two glass side tables for resting tools and drinks on, and fixing plates to keep it securely in place during high winds.
Consider a free-standing pergola
A stand-alone pergola is a good covered outdoor kitchen idea if your cooking set-up is positioned slightly further away from the house, especially if you have an incorporated garden seating area. In a large garden or multi-functional outdoor space, a free-standing structure will help to define the area better, making it instantly visible and more obvious to guests as a gathering point.
While pergolas tend to be open on all four sides, adding timber cladding to one side will help to enclose the area a little and provide a backdrop for kitchen units, cooking appliances and extra storage.
Pick portable pieces
Easy-to-manoeuvre pieces will make setting up an outdoor kitchen a breeze. Lighter-weight units on castors like the Keter BBQ Table from Wayfair can be moved in and out of play as needed. Plus, they are easily shifted into a garden shed or garage out of season.
Make the indoor-outdoor transition seamless
Bi-fold doors create easily accessible indoor-outdoor spaces that are a prime spot for an open-air kitchen. A pergola shade makes the perfect patio cover-up, easily attaching to the exterior of a house to extend the usability of the outdoor area.
Give a pergola extra shade and coverage learning how to train wisteria and other climbing plants to grow over it. Fast-growing climbers will establish themselves quickly and can provide coverage in as little as two years. Make sure any trailing greenery doesn’t overhang the cooking area too much.
Pergola ideas – 20 ways a pergola can enhance your backyard design
Whether to provide shade, zone a garden, or offer privacy, pergola ideas can be a crucial element in your backyard's design. They can also be used to frame pathways, or create structure. Considering the purpose of the pergola is crucial to the design that you choose. Will it be a focal point, or a transition? Will there be seating under it? Ideally it should create its own statement with lower lying plants on either side.
Directing the eye upwards by providing interest on the vertical plane is also important to include in your backyard landscaping ideas, and pergolas are ideal for training a wide variety of scented, flowering climbing plants and creeping vines over for vertical garden ideas. 19 pergola ideas to enhance your backyard | Homes & Gardens (homesandgardens.com)

2. Fit a flexible pergola roof for shade when needed
3. Use a pitched pergola roof for privacy

7 Safety Tips for Grilling by Summerset Professional Grills
When you're cooking on your gas or charcoal grill, follow these seven safety guidelines to ensure everyone stays safe and enjoys themselves during your big backyard barbecue!
Summerset Professional Grills
01 | Location - Choose a Safe Place for Your Grill
The essential tip in safe grilling is locating your grill. Grilling may get out of control, especially when you're too close to it. If embers are too near, they can quickly ignite dry leaves, brush, woods, or buildings. While grilling, you might want to stay in the shade or use an awning for protection from the heat and direct sunshine, but anything that could catch fire should be avoided.
It's critical to thoroughly inspect all of the gear, thinking about what would happen in the worst-case scenario if there was a fire. Ensure your personal space is free of any potential hazards and that you're wearing the correct safety apparel, including goggles and gloves. Keep your barbecue well away from combustible items like trees, bushes, and house siding. Keep in mind that children are generally around, so be cautious around hot surfaces.
Know your wood
If you're using wood instead of charcoal briquettes, it's important to know what you're using. While oak, pecan, applewood, cherrywood, hickory, maple, and mesquite are all wonderful choices for smoking, there are a number of varieties you should avoid. Cedar, pine, and spruce can all burn extremely hot, and the sap could cause flare ups. Additionally, the tar in the smoke can build up in your smoker, causing unintended flames in the future. That's not to say you can't place your meat on something like a cedar plank for a little extra flavor, just avoid using it for fuel.
02 | Keeping Your Grill Clean
Before using your grill, make sure it's been cleaned. Any amount of grilling will generate grease, food particles, and burnt ash inside the grill, regardless of how much you cook. If you're a frequent griller, dirt on your grill poses an increased risk of fire. Any grease or debris in your grill is combustible and leads to dangerous flare-ups that cause a lot of barbecue fires.
At the very least, the grill grates must be brushed clean before and after every usage. The burners, barriers, and grease traps must also be cleaned and emptied as needed.
03 | Fuel - Safe Practices with Liquid or Solid Fuels
Both gas and charcoal grills can have accidents. While gas grills are typically safer, they still need to be handled with care and inspected before usage. The most typical reason for gas grill fires is the presence of debris or insects in the fuel supply pathway. When the grill has cooled off, do inspections of burners, tubes, hoses, and the gas line or propane tank for possible hazards.
The first challenge with charcoal fires is getting them going. Most blazes start in the kitchen, even though charcoal and solid fuel grills are responsible for far more fires. Accelerants like lighter fluid are a poor trade-off for a quickly ignited fire, and they leave chemical byproducts that can contaminate your food. When cooking with solid fuels, use a chimney starter or natural kindling to get the fire going.
When it comes to lighter fluid, a little bit goes a long way. Before applying the fluid, stack your coals or wood in a neat pile to encourage the flame to spread. Following the lighter fluid directions, carefully squirt a moderate amount onto the coals and light immediately afterwards. Never add lighter fluid to hot coals or open flames.
If possible, start your charcoal with a chimney starter and avoid using lighter fluid altogether. This can actually be a more effective method for evenly lightning your coals, and is much safer.
04 | Eyes on the Prize! - Eliminate Distractions
The cook should be clear-headed and focused with no interruptions from alcohol or other chemicals when preparing meals. Grilling may be a communal experience, but it's critical for the chef not to lose focus. One lapse of concentration is all it takes for a fire or an accident.
Keeping your workstation clean is another critical aspect of successful grilling. Keeping counter space on the grill island or setting up a small folding table with freestanding grills will prevent you from juggling ingredients, utensils, and equipment while grilling carelessly.
05 | Stay By Your Grill - Keep a Perimeter
No one wants to be inside when it's nice outside, but it is critical to keep the grilling area clear of vehicles and playing. It's too easy for youngsters and pets to run into or touch a hot grill if they're in the vicinity. Even after you've finished cooking, maintain guests at least three feet away from scorching grills so everyone may enjoy themselves without getting burned.
When you have to leave, keep it brief, and never leave a lit grill with the lid off. Children, pets, unexpected flare-ups, wind-blown leaves, trash—any number of things might occur while you're not there.
06 | Fire Safety & a Fire Extinguisher
When a flare-up occurs, fire travels fast, so you need to be ready. Keep an extinguisher on hand in case of a fire. Never use water to put out a grease fire, even if it is beginning to spread. When using natural gas or propane as fuel, keep in mind that water may damage the appliance and exacerbate the situation. When there is a grease fire, baking soda can help as a backup option.
We hope we never have to use the fire extinguisher, but we need to know it will work when required. Fire extinguishers requiring yearly inspection and training can give you and your family peace of mind by ensuring their operation. It's a good idea to rehearse how to utilize the extinguisher with other chefs and relatives properly. Hence, they fully understand how it works. Knowing how to cut fuel lines and call the fire department is also vital in an emergency.
07 | The User Manual - Have You Read It?
Follow all of the manufacturer's instructions when using your grill effectively, including everything from cleaning to cooking. These recommendations differ greatly depending on the materials and construction of the grill. When it comes to finding manuals specific to your model of smoker or gas/charcoal grill, visit the manufacturers' websites.
There's plenty of information about how to use and maintain a safe grilling environment from experts to amateurs. When a manual is insufficient or unavailable, looking up videos and articles on the internet can assist you in learning what you need to know. It's time to get cooking once you've done your research and have an understanding of your model's capabilities.
Here's to an Accident-Free Barbecue
Grilling is a social activity that brings families, friends, and communities together around fantastic food and wonderful conversation. While grilling has its hazards, all it takes is a little care and attention to create a safe atmosphere. You should be able to stay safe while having fun during your next barbecue with these seven grilling safety pointers.
Grilling Safety Checklist
Tumblr media
Follow Instructions
When using your grill, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, especially when setting this up. Grills should never be used for something other than what they’re intended for.
Be Protected
All barbecue safety tips would definitely recommend wearing protective clothing, including a mask. Loose sleeves should be rolled up, so this will not come into contact with a hot grill and possibly ignite. Meanwhile, exposed skin could get burned by hot coals and grease, particularly if these are not adequately covered.
Stay Outside
A grill should never be used indoors or in an enclosed space, regardless of the type. Ideally, this should be placed in an open area of the home, 10 feet away from the nearest tree or large plants. A grill placed too close to anything flammable is a fire hazard.
Watch the Children
When your grill is lit, ensure that little children are kept from the area for at least three feet. Many bbq safety tips also advise that pets should be watched as well because they could get attracted by the aroma of your grilled food. In short, never leave the grill unattended at any given time because accidents often occur when no one is watching.
Spare the Lighter
If you have a charcoal-based grill, use a charcoal starter fluid and never a lighter. If you do, it could lead to a flare-up that can quickly get out of control. When you’re done grilling, ensure that the coals have completely cooled before disposing of them.
Check the Hoses and Grills for Gas Leaks
Some other barbecue safety tips involve the use of a propane grill. In this case, the tank hose should first be checked thoroughly for any possible leaks. Meanwhile, if you smell gas while cooking, get away from the grill and call your local emergency number immediately.
While you can usually spot most leaks or damaged lines with a simple visual inspection, it's important to conduct a more thorough check before your grilling season. Make sure all of the fittings and valves are seated properly. Once you've turned the fuel supply on, take a water and soap solution and coat the various lines to look for leaks.
Use a Pan
To catch any grease or ash that falls from the grill, it’s a good barbecue safety advice to place a fireproof pan underneath it. Both materials are hot and could spark if they come into contact with your lawn grass or any piece of paper.
Use Grilling Tools
A thermal burn is the most common injury involving grills. Thus, you should never reach out for grilled food with your bare hands as they could get caught by the flames. It’s best to use long-handled grilling knives, tongs, and other equipment for safety reasons.
Check the Grill
Place your grill on a stable, level surface about three feet away from the house deck and fence. Grills that tend to tip to one side can cause serious injuries. After using them, clean the grills by removing grease and fat because these can still be fire risks.
Shut it down
When you're done with your BBQ masterpiece, it's important to make sure that you shut down your grill or smoker properly. For a gas grill, turn off your burners as well as the valve on the supply tank.
For a charcoal grill or smoker, make sure to allow the coals to cool before properly disposing of the ashes in a metal container. If necessary, douse them in water and stir to help the cooling process. If you have a compost pile going, you can add ash to it to increase the carbon content!
Red Cross Fire Cooking Checklist
As we close out the summer season, many families will hold barbecues during Labor Day weekend. Before you fire up the grill, be sure you are taking the below safety precautions:
Tumblr media
Wash your hands, utensils and workstation before preparing the food.
Separate uncooked meats, poultry and seafood from ready-to-eat foods like salads, fruits, vegetables, cheeses and desserts. Use separate plates and utensils to prevent cross-contamination.
Bring hand sanitizer if your picnic site doesn’t have hand-washing facilities.
If you are going to cook on the grill, bring a food thermometer to be sure grilled foods are cooked enough.
Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use.
Don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
Never grill indoors.
Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill.
Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.
Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to help keep the chef safe.
Wash your hands before preparing the food.
Don’t leave food out in the hot sun. Keep perishable foods in a cooler with plenty of ice or freezer gel packs.

BBQ Bill's carrys a full line of barbecue grills running on propane, pellet, charcoal and electric smoker grills for the backyard, professional and commercial use from top brands like Aspire, Blaze, Bonfire, Coyote, DCS, Delta Heat, Gozney, Green Mountain, Hestan, Kamado, Lynx, Memphis, Summerset, Twin Eagle, Viking and Wolf. With BBQ smokers, you can grill, air fry, roast, bake, broil, and dehydrate with authentic smoky flavors.
If your HOA won't let you smoke or use a charcoal grill, you have two options: electric grills and gas grills. However, it's not always clear which type of grill is best. Gas can be a little unwieldy, and electric grills have a bad reputation as being a little tasteless.
I've taken a deep dive into both types of grills to help you decide. I've tested the best grills for most of my career, so I know up close and personal which type works for different homes. I also spoke to a grill expert for even more information. -  Homes & Gardens  Electric grills vs gas grills: which is best? | (homesandgardens.com)
ELECTRIC GRILLS: PROS
There are several benefits to using an electric grill. The first is that they're very flexible. Most small, table-top electric grills can be used both indoors and outdoors, so you can keep on grilling even in a freezing winter. This also means that even if you live in a very strict HOA, you can still grill.
Grill expert Mike Williams told me 'I have an electric grill because I have a family of 4, and we use ours for 4-5 meals a week. We can use it indoors when it’s cold or rainy and bring it outside when our New England weather decides to warm up.'
Mike Williams also told me that electric grills are a little safer than gas and charcoal grills.  'They are safer in that they do not require an open flame to produce heat. Because they don’t have an open flame, there is a much smaller chance of any flare-ups.' This also means an easier cooking experience, because unlike gas grills and charcoal grills, which can have cool spots and flare-ups, an electric has uniform heat across the surface of the grill.
They are also potentially greener than gas grills or charcoal grills. Though lots of charcoal is sustainably sourced, the smoke emitted from a charcoal grill is bad for the environment. Propane is a by-product of the oil industry, so has a bad carbon footprint. However, if your electric grill is running on electricity produced in a coal-fired power station, it may not be much cleaner than either other type.
ELECTRIC GRILLS: CONS
Flavor is one of the biggest drawbacks of electric grills. They're the least flavorful way of grilling. I've often said that gas grills taste a little sterile in comparison to charcoal grills, but electric grills are even worse. Charcoal tastes so good because fats and oils from your food drop onto the coals and evaporate, making delicious, moist smoke that infuses your ingredients with smoky flavor.
This doesn't happen with gas grills, but the flames mean that it happens a little. Some gas grills almost get there; Weber grills have 'Flavoriser' bars that help to imitate the effect, and you can find ceramic briquettes for gas grills that work similarly to charcoal. However, it's not the same. None of this is possible on an electric grill, so when it comes to flavor, there's little difference between an electric grill and frying a burger in a skillet.
Another drawback with electric grills is that they tend to be pretty small. The Ninja above is tiny, with a 141 sq-inch cooking surface. It's more than 4 times smaller than most gas grills, so it doesn't work for feeding large crowds of people unless you're cooking hot dogs.
Mike Williams agrees. He told me 'The most glaring drawback of an electric grill is that they are often smaller than gas grills. While this is convenient for some, gas or charcoal grills can accommodate a feast for large gatherings, but many electric grills would require multiple rounds to achieve this.'
GAS GRILLS: PROS
Gas grills are much bigger than electric grills, so if you're feeding a crowd, you need a gas grill. One of our favorite large gas grills can cook 40 burgers in a single sitting, whereas some electric grills would tap out at 4.
They are also outfitted with bonus features that you rarely see on electric grills. Gas grills often come with side burners for cooking sides, warming racks for heating side dishes, and rotisserie functions for delicious roasted chicken. Electric grills are essentially griddles and rarely have these functions.
Gas grills also simply taste better than electric grills. My experience is that they're not as delicious as charcoal, but still better than electric grills, which don't impart any smokiness to your food at all.
GAS GRILLS: CONS
Electric grills are much more convenient than gas grills. A gas grill needs you to think about some pretty boring propane logistics. With propane, you have to go through the rigmarole of refills, as well as work out how and where you will safely store the propane when you aren't using it. With an electric grill, all you need to do is plug it in and switch it on.
Gas grills are also less efficient than electric grills. They're slower to heat up than electric grills and tend to have cool spots. Electric grills are faster and more consistent.
This efficiency also means that electric grills are much cheaper in the long run. With an electric grill,  you don't need to shell out for new propane every few cookouts. An electric grill takes about as much power as any other large appliance.
That's before you factor in that electric grills are also cheaper upfront. Granted, this is largely because they're smaller than gas grills, but even the pricier electric grills are cheaper than entry-level gas grills.
BUY ELECTRIC IF:
You want something easy
You want something to use indoors
You want something compact
You want something cheap
BUY GAS IF:
You want better-tasting food
You want bonus features
You want to cook for a crowd

What sort of flavors do you want for your food?
Finding the perfect grill for you boils down to a few factors, but the first one you need to answer is what your cooking style is and the level of convenience you expect from your grill. Each type has advantages and disadvantages, so knowing their key characteristics will put you well on your way to a match made in barbeque heaven.
Gas
Gas grills are one of the most common fuel types. Built in a cart style, gas grills use either an attachable liquid propane tank or natural gas via a conversion kit connecting the grill to your home's natural gas supply line.
The debate over natural gas or liquid propane burns hot. Natural gas burns cleaner in terms of greenhouse gases, it's cheaper to use and you won't have to bother with refilling propane tanks.
You won't be able to move your grill around since it's connected to a gas line. Liquid propane is the more popular fuel choice, and it's portable. It's also pricier and needs refilling. The good news is many gas grills can accommodate both, so you don't have to choose right away.
With a gas grill, you'll have more control over the heat and how it is distributed across your cooking surface. Gas grills such as the Char-Broil Commercial three-burner are great for adjusting between high heat for searing and lower heat for steady cooking. If you're looking to cook meats like whole chicken or racks of ribs for hours at a time, you'll have better results with a charcoal grill, pellet grill or smoker.
Charcoal
Cooking with charcoal is one of the oldest grilling methods around and is typically what comes to mind when we think of grilling. They come in many shapes and sizes, which introduced the design that's widely recognized today. As common as charcoal grills are, there are some quirks to consider when looking at these cookers.
Charcoal grills burn using charcoal briquettes or lumps of charcoal. That's where the smoky flavor comes from. You'll need to spend a little more time lighting the briquettes and preheating the grill than you will with a gas grill. You'll also need to clean the grill and dispose of the charcoal ash when you're done grilling.
Charcoal grills might not be as precise or customizable as a gas grill when it comes to cooking, but they have a distinct flavor and are the most affordable option. There are high-end charcoal grills, called Kamado grills, made from thick and heavy ceramic. This build material is perfect for retaining heat, and the iconic egg shape promotes airflow and maximum flavor. All of this adds up to a charcoal cooker that can handle long cooks and high-heat grilling in one.
Pellets
Pellet grills burn wood pellets and have an onboard computer to manage the heat up to your desired temperature. These grills can go low and slow to add smoky, wood-fired flavor to your food or get searing hot to make the perfect burger. Pellet grills yield tasty meat, especially when slow-cooked, but the pellets can be more expensive than charcoal and slightly harder to find than propane. Most hardware and big box stores are now carrying pellets.
Pellet grills use a hopper to hold food-grade wood pellets. Once you've ignited the grill with a switch and set the temperature, a rotating auger connected to the hopper moves the pellets into a burn pot. Pellet grills come in barrel or cart styles, and prices range from around $350 to over $2,000.
What size grill do I need?
Once you've decided what fuel type is right for you, think about the size grill you need. Most small to medium charcoal, pellet and two-burner gas grills will do just fine if you're cooking for four people or fewer on an occasional basis.
If you're the center of the neighborhood barbecue scene or have a large household, consider a larger model with four, five or even more burners. If you're dead set on having a gas grill, but also want to cook meats like whole chickens or racks of ribs with indirect heat, you'll want at least a three-burner model. If you want smokey goodness from your big cooker, then wood pellet smolers are the way to go  BBQ Bill's Best Wood Pellet Smoker Grills for 2024 - Pit Boss Pro (bbqbills.com)
What extra features do I want my grill to have?
At the most basic level, a grill should just cook well. In addition to taking the right steps to prep your grill, there are a handful of extra features you can look for that will enhance your experience. For example, a side burner is a great place to heat sauces or sides without dashing between your kitchen stovetop and patio. If you think you might move your grill around during the season, make sure your grill comes with wheels on all four legs and an option to lock them.

Trends and Considerations for Outdoor Stone and Tile Designs
Tumblr media
From outdoor kitchens to firepits and expanded patio areas, homeowners are seeking luxurious living spaces outside their home where they can relax and enjoy time with family and friends. Materials such as stone and tile are aiding in creating beautiful and sustainable designs that seamlessly transition between interior and exterior areas. Trends and Considerations for Outdoor Stone and Tile Designs | Stone World
Outdoor spaces are extremely important in residential design, whether it is a remodel/spruce-up or new construction. We are seeing homeowners continue the “staycation craze” that really stemmed from the pandemic. Homeowners are adding putting greens, outdoor fireplaces, lounge pools, gardens, and grand outdoor kitchens. They want their entire yard to be landscaped and utilized for entertaining and hobbies. Most new-build houses come with an outdoor fireplace and grill station, pretty much expected in all price points! Outdoor kitchens have become a “must” these days in residential outdoor designs.
Outdoor Living Trends by Pool Builders
Tumblr media
As we enter into 2024, outdoor living trends continues to evolve, bringing new ideas and innovations to the forefront. From open plan pool concepts to eco-friendly and smart technology, the focus is on creating harmonious outdoor living environments that seamlessly integrate with our modern lifestyles. To get a sense of what’s hot and trending, we spoke with pool builders from all over the country to find out what’s becoming more popular with homeowners this pool season. Today, we’ll take a look at 5 important trends in outdoor living that are becoming increasingly popular this year. Outdoor Living Trends - 5 Major Trends Taking Over The Backyard (poolmagazine.com)
Eco-Friendly
Another popular trend in swimming pools and outdoor living spaces is the incorporation of sustainable and eco-friendly features. “From solar-powered heaters to ultra-efficient pool pumps and filters to products made to recycle the pool water itself, homeowners are looking for ways to make their swimming pools and outdoor living spaces more sustainable and environmentally-friendly,” said Joseph.
“One of the most important factors in designing an eco-smart pool is energy efficiency, explained Joseph, “Swimming pools can be major energy consumers, and designers are working to reduce this by incorporating features such as variable-speed pumps, recycling systems, and energy-efficient heaters. By reducing the energy consumption of the pool, homeowners can lower their monthly energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint.”
Smart Technology
Finally, many homeowners are investing in smart technology when building their swimming pools and outdoor living spaces. This includes smart pool covers that can be controlled remotely, smart lighting systems, AI-based pool fences and even pool cleaning robots. These smart technologies make maintaining and using your swimming pool and outdoor living spaces easier and more convenient.
Ultimately, the swimming pool is now a natural extension of the home, with homeowners incorporating them into their homes in a number of ways. They’re embracing popular outdoor living trends; from centralizing their backyard around their swimming pools to incorporating water features, eco-friendly features and smart home technology, the possibilities are endless. If you’re thinking of building a swimming pool or incorporating an outdoor living area into your home, now is the time to start exploring your options.
Creating Harmonious Outdoor Living Spaces
Outdoor living spaces are also being incorporated into homes in a number of other ways, with many homeowners investing in outdoor kitchens and dining areas, according to Paula Thomas of Thomas Pools & Spas in Modesto. “These spaces are perfect for entertaining guests and provide a comfortable area for cooking, dining and relaxing, said Thomas, “many homeowners are also incorporating fire pits, fireplaces and outdoor lighting into their outdoor living spaces, making them usable even after the sun sets.”
“Designers are always looking for ways to incorporate these kind of elements into the swimming pool area to create a seamless and functional outdoor living space,” said Thomas, “We accomplish this by capturing the homeowners vision and pairing that with the right design, materials, and techniques to create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and practical.

Crafting the perfect outdoor living space can be a balancing act. On one hand, you want to create a space you love, and on the other, it may be important that any project you take on increases your home’s value—which is completely possible with outdoor additions. Although some renovations don’t add resale value, others are great choices, especially when you’re considering moving in the future.
If you’re looking to increase your home’s resale value, outdoor additions are a tried-and-true answer. From more straightforward projects like adding firepit areas to more complex renovations like new outdoor kitchens, here are six options to consider. https://www.forbes.com/home-improvement/outdoor/outdoor-additions-increase-value/
In locations where outdoor living is more of a year-round affair, an outdoor kitchen makes sense—especially when noting how much value it adds to a home. The NAR reports that homeowners can see an impressive 100% cost recovery when adding a kitchen to an outdoor area.
Outdoor kitchens can vary widely from basic and budget-friendly to luxe and costly. Before you commit to putting one in your backyard, take a peek at the other houses in your neighborhood. The final ROI could depend on how common the addition is in your area and whether or not it will give you a competitive edge when selling your home.
The average cost for an indoor kitchen ranges between $12,000 and $60,500. With an outdoor kitchen, the cost range stretches even further on both sides. You can find prefab layouts for around $5,000, but fully customized designs can be as much as $100,000. With these costs, it’s best do do ample research prior to committing.
These No-Demo Renos Can Majorly Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal
Zillow used listing data from 3.9 million homes listed for sale on its platform between June 2023 and May 2024 to find out exactly which smaller-scale home projects potential homebuyers are most interested in today.  “These features bring a wow factor to a home or they serve as a signal that a home is up-to-date, well-maintained, or move-in ready. When it’s time to sell, these features may ultimately help a home sell faster or for more money, because there will likely be more competition for that home among buyers.”
Tumblr media
Speaking of spending time outdoors, patio covers and pergolas are also all the rage. Homes with these outdoor shade structures can get 20% more saves and 24% more shares every day, with an average cost of $3,600. Add in a fire pit, which will cost about $200, and your home could be saved 19% more and shared 23% more on Zillow. - Better Homes & Gardens https://www.bhg.com/top-no-demo-renos-zillow-thumbtack-8680652
These Are the Most Popular Home Features of 2024, According to a New Survey
Of the participants surveyed, 61 percent chose kitchen islands as the feature home buyers rate as their number one priority. Not only do kitchen islands allow for bar seating, they also provide homeowners with extra countertop space for cooking and preparing meals. What's more, kitchen islands often offer built-in storage space for cookware and other essentials. - Martha Stewart https://www.marthastewart.com/most-important-home-features-survey-july-2024-8677128

The Top 10 Upgrades That Make Your Home Sell Over Asking
Preparing to sell your home is no small endeavor. From hiring a real estate agent and getting your home appraised to passing every inspection, selling your home is often a months long feat. One of the most important elements of selling your home is ensuring that you’re getting the most bang for your buck and maximizing your home’s asking price. New Zillow research finds outdoor TVs, outdoor showers, and outdoor kitchens can help homes sell for as much as 3.1 percent more than expected, according to Zillow trend expert Amanda Pendleton.
Soapstone is quickly becoming the most sought-after countertop stone for kitchens. Beloved by designers and chefs (like Bobby Flay, Ina Garten, and Martha Stewart) alike, the stone is more durable than marble and easier to clean than other types of stone. “While it may come with a slightly higher price tag, this natural, nonporous stone can help a home sell for 3 percent more than expected,” Pendleton says. “This is compared with a 1.7 percent price premium for quartz and 0.5 percent for marble countertops.”
Average Cost to Complete: According to Angi, the average range of outdoor kitchen costs is between $6,127 for a simple setup (such as a grill and countertop), and $26,163 for a full high-end kitchen installation outdoors.
Outdoor kitchens extend your culinary potential and your entertaining space. And while they vary greatly in both form and amenities, even a simple one can lead buyers to offer an average of 1.7 percent above asking.
Tumblr media
Average Cost to Complete: According to Angi data, the national average is $5,000 for an outdoor pizza oven, including installation. However, you can expect to spend anywhere between $2,000 and $8,000 depending on project scale.
Whether brick, ceramic, or metal, outdoor pizza kitchens are becoming all the rage for summer entertaining. Adding one to your outdoor room or kitchen can help to boost your home’s selling price. - House Beautiful https://www.housebeautiful.com/design-inspiration/real-estate/a61210067/renovations-to-make-your-house-sell-for-more/

If you're interested in outdoor living trends, you've come to the right place. We're breaking down what we know about consumer habits as it relates to outdoor living space, patio space, trends in outdoor furniture, landscaping, and smart home elements. As Houzz shared in its 2024 U.S. Houzz & Home Study, 53% of homeowners made updates to their spaces last year, and that trend isn't looking to change, so let's see what's on the horizon. Deckorators, a leading provider of outdoor living solutions, also shared insight into consumer shifts in the summer edition of its Outdoor Living Report with insights from top deck, dock, and interior design professionals. - Men's Journal, July 2024 https://www.mensjournal.com/pursuits/home-living/residential-trends-in-outdoor-spaces

The collaboration complements with added elegance, durability, and aesthetic appeal. "This partnership is working to rethink and redefine the outdoor kitchen and they have done so beautifully," adds Celerie Kemble in the Home and Design Trendspotting Report by the NKBA Design Council.
Outdoor Living Trends for 2024
Today, I'm thrilled to share my favorite trends in outdoor living for 2024. Whether you're a seasoned patio pro or just starting your backyard journey, these trends are sure to inspire your outdoor space this summer. So, let's dive in! Pretty Dressed, July 2024 https://www.prettydistressed.com/blog/outdoor-living-trends-for-2024
Outdoor Kitchens
One of the standout trends for me right now is outdoor kitchens. I recently visited the HGTV Smart Home and was blown away by the amazing setup. Outdoor kitchens can be customized with built-in grills, mini fridges, pizza ovens, and even sinks. With advancements in outdoor materials, you can get beautiful, durable cabinets that withstand the elements. Plus, you don't need to spend a fortune; there are many affordable pre-fabricated options available.
Tumblr media
As an outdoor cooking enthusiast with a smoker, flat-top griddle, and pizza oven, having an organized and functional space is something I'm seriously considering for my home.
Entertainment Walls
Take your outdoor space to the next level with entertainment walls featuring TVs, sound systems, and fireplaces. They’re perfect for movie nights, watching your favorite shows, or cheering on your team. While this is a significant investment, it adds luxury and convenience.

What are Some Popular Trends in Outdoor Living Design?
Outdoor living spaces have evolved far beyond simple patios and backyards with a few chairs. Today, they are extensions of our homes, meticulously designed to offer comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. If you’re looking to update your outdoor area or just want to stay on top of the latest trends, here’s a comprehensive look at the most popular trends in outdoor living design. 2. Outdoor Kitchens and Dining Areas
Fully Equipped Outdoor Kitchens
Outdoor kitchens have evolved from simple barbecue setups to fully equipped cooking spaces with grills, refrigerators, sinks, and even pizza ovens. These kitchens are designed to make outdoor cooking convenient and enjoyable, allowing homeowners to prepare and serve meals without constantly going in and out of the house.
High-quality materials like stainless steel and stone are commonly used to withstand the elements and maintain a sleek, modern look.
Alfresco Dining
Accompanying the outdoor kitchen trend is the rise of alfresco dining areas.
Tumblr media
These spaces are designed for outdoor meals and entertaining, often featuring large dining tables, comfortable seating, and stylish lighting. Weather-resistant furniture and fabrics ensure that these dining areas remain inviting and functional throughout the year.
Pergolas and Shade Structures
To enhance comfort, pergolas, and other shade structures are being incorporated into outdoor kitchen and dining areas. These structures provide relief from the sun, allowing for a more enjoyable dining experience.
Tumblr media
7. Fire Features
Fire features are a popular trend that adds warmth and ambiance to outdoor living spaces. They extend the usability of outdoor areas into the cooler months and create a cozy gathering spot.
Fire Pits and Fire Tables
Fire pits and fire tables come in a variety of styles and sizes, making them suitable for any outdoor space. They can be fueled by wood, propane, or natural gas, providing flexibility and convenience.
Outdoor Fireplaces
For a more permanent solution, outdoor fireplaces are a striking addition to patios and decks. They can be built using materials such as stone or brick and often include seating areas and mantels for added functionality.
Tumblr media
9. Water Features
Water features are a timeless trend in outdoor living design. They add a sense of tranquility and can serve as a focal point in the landscape.
Fountains and Waterfalls
Fountains and waterfalls create soothing sounds and visual interest. They can be incorporated into various outdoor settings, from small garden fountains to large waterfall installations.
Ponds and Water Gardens
Ponds and water gardens provide a habitat for aquatic plants and wildlife, adding an element of nature to the outdoor space. These features can be customized to fit any size and style of garden.
Splash Pads and Pools
For families with children, splash pads and pools offer a fun and interactive way to enjoy the outdoors. These water features can be designed with safety and aesthetics in mind, ensuring both enjoyment and visual appeal.
Tumblr media
These Are the Top Outdoor Home Trends, According to Houzz
After the long winter months, the time has finally come to enjoy our outdoor spaces again. In doing so, however, you may discover that your patio furniture could use an upgrade. Maybe your backyard dreams include an all-weather couch, a bigger coffee table, and a mini-fridge so you don’t have to keep going inside to get a cold drink.
If you’re considering upgrading your yard, deck, or patio, you’re not alone. Houzz surveyed more than 1,000 homeowners who had recently remodeled their outdoor space in order to track down the hottest outdoor trends of 2024. From pizza ovens to porch sconces to plunge pools, built-in bars, and more, many homeowners are investing in the improvement of their outdoor spaces. See below for details on the trends that are taking off this summer—and get inspired for your own projects. The time is now to seize that outdoor oasis you’ve always dreamed of. Outdoor Cooking
Tumblr media
More and more homeowners are finding ways to cook alfresco. One out of every eight renovating homeowners are adding upgrades to their outdoor kitchens, a perfect way to relive your childhood camping memories in a more refined, grown-up manner. Grills remain the quintessential outdoor cooking implement with 88% of renovators buying in, followed by beverage fridges and cook tops at 46%, and pizza ovens at 32%. Some of these projects are a real commitment, though, requiring significant construction, such as installation of plumbing, electrical, heating, countertops, and roofing. Yet, it may all seem worth it when you’re searing your burger in the open air.
Fire and Water Accents
Tumblr media
Last, but not least, for the centerpiece of your new outdoor living space, one out of five renovators this year are introducing a fireplace or a fire pit. It’s the perfect finishing touch for any style of backyard, and it’ll keep you warm when the night turns cold. Or, for another taste of the natural elements, 19% of homeowners purchased a fountain. Both of these features add an element of luxury to your area without being labor intensive.
